--------
1798 Jun. 8

Babin, Jose Dosite
New Orleans, (Louisiana)

to Bishop (Luis Penalver y Cardenas)
New Orleans, (Louisiana)

Babin of Iberville appeared before (Penalver) and stated that he wishes to marry Marg(ari)ta Hebert of the same place and faith. He asks (Penalver) to receive the information necessary for a dispensation from consanguinity. The witnesses will present the following points: that he is the son of Magdalena Richard and Pedro Babin, son of another Pedro Babin and Maria Landry, daughter of German Landry and Maria Melanson; that Margarita Hebert is the daughter of Jose Hebert and Ana Landry, daughter of Ana Babin and Juan Bautista Landry, son of German Landry and Maria Melanson, therefore they are related in the third degree; that Margarita's parents are very poor and over 70 years old, that their house in Bayou de Manchac is very poor and they have decided to go to Baton Rouge or to Galveston; that Margarita has to support them; that he has frequented her house for one year with the purpose of marrying her. Father (Isidro) Quintero, as secretary, states in a note at the beginning of the letter that Babin appeared but does not know how to sign.
