Maxwell, Father (James)
St. Genevieve, (Missouri)
to Father (Pierre Joseph) Didier, (O.S.B.)
Pra(i)rie du Rocher, (Illinois)
An annoying affair prevents Maxwell from going to perform the marriage ceremony for Pierre le Conte and Miss Susanne. He wished very much to go as he has many obligations to le Conte and to the family of Miss du Barbeau. He asks Didier to perform the ceremony without a fee and he will settle with him. He promised le Conte on his trip to New Orleans that he would marry him. The reason Maxwell cannot go is that there is to be a duel today between Dodge and Hamilton; Mr. Luziere and he are trying to reconcile them. He is glad that Didier's affair with Menard has ended; this will put his character above reproach. Maxwell received through Mr. Poislievre a barrel of apples which he thinks comes from Didier's brother.
