The Catholic church of the West Side has been sued for a balance due Louis Martin, a member thereof. While it is an honest debt, Koch does not think it can ever be collected in the way the plaintiff commenced proceedings. From a conversation with Father Marco he understands the parish is very poor. Douglas, S(tephen) A.: Washington, (D.C.)
to Ja(me)s A(lphonsus) McMaster: New York, (New York)

Douglas 'illness is the reason for his late reply to McMaster's letter. He thanks McMaster for the terms in which the latter has spoken of the former's replies to Judge Black, and for the defense McMaster makes of Douglas' public career. He has read with great interest and laid aside for future reference the slip McMaster furnished Douglas. Mrs. Douglas joins in his greeting to the McMasters.

O'Donnell, F.: (New Orleans, Louisiana?)
 to Archbishop (Anthony) Blanc: N(ew) O(rleans), L(ouisian)a

O'Donnell corrects the opinion he expressed regarding the Bienville Square. The one he had reference to is 5 squares further out; therefore the allusions to swamps, etc. have no ground. He does not wish the opinions he expresses to have any weight in the choice to be made.

Freret, R.S.C., Sister Eugenie: Grand Coteau, (Louisiana)
to Archbishop (Anthony Blanc: New Orleans, Louisiana)

Sister Eugenie is happy to be again under (Blanc)'s jurisdiction. Her three years at St. Louis have not diminished her filial respect. They had looked forward to (Blanc)'s visit but their hopes were in vain at least for this year. As a compensation they beg the favor of having midnight Mass in their chapel on Christmas. They have waited for a long time to see him and now it does not look as if his visit will be this year. They would like to have a Midnight Mass on Christmas, and will offer their Communions for him.

Castet, Father C: Newark, (New Jersey)
to Archbishop (Anthony Blanc: New Orleans, Louisiana)

Castet received (Blanc)'s letter December 1 — one day too late. He had despaired of receiving an answer and Bishop (Andrew Byrne) of Arkansas on his return from Ireland having asked him into that diocese, Castet was on the point of doing so when Bishop (James Roosevelt Bayley) of Newark advised him to stay with him. He has need of priests and offered Castet a parish where a missionary knowing French is very useful. So he cannot for the present, come to New Orleans. If the difficulties with English are too great, he hopes (Blanc) will permit him to again have recourse to his kindness.

1859 Dec. 7
Cricou, Leonide: N(ew) O(rleans, Louisiana)
to Archbishop (Anthony Blanc: New Orleans, Louisiana)

She is going to ask a great favor. Blanc gave her First Communion long ago and she has always been a servant of God. She is giving her sister in marriage; rather she should say her daughter, because she was eight years old when their mother died and now she is 18. Leonide has been ill for a year; it is only a few weeks since she has been out of danger. She is confined to her bed; to go to the church would probably kill her. She asks a dispensation, for how could her daughter receive the divine blessing if Leonide were not there to unite hers.

(18)59 Dec. 7
Peter, Mrs. Sarah: Jersey City, (New Jersey)
to (Orestes A.) Brownson: (Elizabeth, New Jersey)

Father (Dominic) Senez(?) desires her to translate "The Life of M. Olier," but has heard that a life has been published in England. She wonders if this is true. She had heard that a translation of (Johann Joseph Ignaz Von) Dollinger has been announced in England. Her translation of the "Life of St. Joseph" has now gone to press. She is not satisfied with it and desires not to be recognized as the translator. Protestants will certainly severly criticize it; the more so because the Church has so warmly praised it.

1859 Dec. 7
Tholomier, Father (Claude Anthony): Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Anthony Blanc: New Orleans, Louisiana)

Tholomier was very sad to learn in a letter from Father (Auguste Simon) Paris of (Blanc)'s accident at Donaldsonville but he has learned that (Blanc) is recovering. Tholomier went to Loretto and met a French priest there who teaches French at a Jesuit school; he wants to work in the missions. He knows Italian and French and asked Tholomier to write to (Blanc) to to see if he would accept him. His references are Cardinal (Alexander) Barnabo and also the General of the Carmelites. Information can also be had from St. Sulpice at Paris and from the Curé of St. Severin at Paris. He impressed Tholomier well. (Blanc) is to write Tholomier if he would accept this priest. Tholomier will not return before the end of next April. The priest of whom Tholomier spoke would have to have help to pay his passage. Tholomier has received no news at Rome from (Blanc). A French seminary here would like to keep him and he has been offered a position at Besancon but Tholomier would much prefer to return to (Blanc) Barnabo would give Tholomier the title of Apostolic Missionary if he had a letter from (Blanc) affirming his assent and stating that he had been in (Blanc)'s diocese. Tholomier will reserve telling of his trip to Jerusalem and his stay in Rome until he sees (Blanc). He will leave for Besancon day after tomorrow; he will be 3 miles from there with the pastor of Amayney, a friend of Tholomier's late uncle. Tholomier does not know what (Blanc) has done about the Father (Joseph) Richard-Bole affair. Has (Blanc) sent to Messrs. Faivre(?) and Chatel(a)in the money due for the interest, besides(?) the 56 piastres which Father (Cyril?) Delacroix had owed for 18 years (?) for interest on 800 piastres for the establishment of the Brothers. (P.S.) Tholomier today received (Blanc)'s letter of October(?) 10. He made the visits (Blanc) asked him to; all were very much satisfied to have news of (Blanc). (Blanc) is to send the draft to the enclosed address. 1450 francs is the figure indicated.

Dix, William G.: Yonkers, (New York)
to (Orestes A.) Brownson: (Elizabeth, New Jersey)

Dix would like to give a lecture in Elizabeth on Spanish power in America with an accent on the natural features of the Andes, taken from personal observation. This lecture he gave in Albany to a heartily appreciative audience. If there is a Catholic Society that would sponsor it, Dix would like to have his offer laid before them. He had hoped to see Brownson when he was in New York but learned that he had moved to New Jersey.

Josephine, Sister: Namur, (Belgium)
to Archbishop John Baptist Purcell: (Cincinnati, Ohio)

Sister is sorry she left Cincinnati without having seen Purcell but unforeseen circumstances forced her to leave early. She thanks Purcell and the Sisters(Of Notre Dame de Namur) for the prayers offered for her safe return home, as it took only 10 days to cross the Atlantic. She and her two companions were cordially greeted in Liverpool (England) by some Sisters. They went on to London and remained there two days, after which they went to Antwerp and from there to the Mother House at Namur where a retreat was assembled. At the Mother House she met Sister Louise de Gonzague, former Superioress of Cincinnati, who sends her regards to Purcell.

(Portier), Bishop Michael: Mobile, (Alabama
to Archbishop A(nthony) Blanc: New Orleans, (Louisiana)

Portier received Blanc's letter yesterday inviting him to the (Second Provincial Council of New Orleans). He cannot leave Mobile until Sunday if his health permits. He had recovered from his last fall when he had a second, more dangerous one. He was returning from the convent at 6 in the evening when his carriage hit the post of a toll gate in the darkness. He broke no bones. He is thankful to God for sparing him and also to his mother who gave him an iron constitution. Blanc wants a Coadjutor and so does Portier. His trip in April will not be useless to their cause and that of the province.

to O(restes) A. Brownson: (Elizabeth, New Jersey

The following is a copy of the note which Quinn sent the Society: - It will be impossible for him to lecture before the Y(oung) C(atholic) F(riends) Society. When he made the engagement he was unaware that an eminent Catholic who had been invited to lecture was afterwards rejected. - Mr. Donohue refuses to publish the note, but gives pretty good reasons for it. However, Quinn asked him to insert that his name has been withdrawn at his own request and thinks that will suffice.

to Father (Stephen Rousselon: New Orleans, Louisiana)

The court secretary at Assumption and his parent have set their marriage, one for the 26, and the other for the 27th of this month without notifying Maréchaux or paying any attention to the impediment of the time. The invitations are out and it is too late to countermand them. The only thing left to do is to ask (Rousselon) for a dispensation as he believes the Bishop is at Mobile. The court secretary is marrying a young girl who lives a mile from Maréchaux's church. They should be married in the church, but in bad weather it is impossible for women to come down the bayou. So he would like a dispensation to marry them at home in that case. He asks (Rousselon) to answer immediately for the service is very irregular.

Keller, Father G(eorge): Covington, (Louisiana)
to Archbishop (Anthony Blanc: New Orleans, Louisiana)

He writes because he cannot come to the city. It is raining so hard and he fears that on arriving in New Orleans he cannot get to Bon Fouca as he can from here. He arrived at Covington Friday night. On Sunday he said Mass and in the evening had catechism and the rosary. He has found Covington better than he had thought. He thought he would be going on the mission as he did in Min(n)esota and was agreeably surprised to find a fine little chapel with a fine house. On leaving New Orleans, he asked Father Rousselon for a purificator, corporal, etc. and Rousselon said he would not need them. The morning before he left he went to see the sacristan to see if he could not have these things but the sacristan did not give them. However, he needs them here and had to break the door of the wardrobe. The people here seem well disposed; he does not have a large congregation but he hopes it will grow. The weather being so bad he wants to stay here, prepare the people for Confession, have midnight Mass at Covington and then Mass at Madisonville. Perhaps he will stay there for the week. So he will come to New Orleans on January 2 or 3. The house where he is staying furnishes him with everything. Mr. and Mrs. Roach(?) are very good to him. (P.S.) He will go to Bonfouca the first Sunday after the new year.

O'Reilly, S.J. Father B(ernard): Fordham, (New York)
to Orestes A. Brownson: (Elizabeth, New Jersey)

O'Reilly quotes extracts of a letter (in French) from Father Matignon. The Jesuits in Paris appreciate Brownson's sympathy. Dom Gueranger took Father Matignon to task for not demolishing M. de Broglie. He thinks Gueranger was severe enough on de Broglie in the two volume work against de Broglie's work on the Roman Empire. Edward (Brownson) will tell Brownson of the ill success which has attended the efforts of Doctor (Jeremiah W.) Cummings, and Doctor Morrogh. Father (William S.) Murphy is not better. He and Father (Remigius J.) Tellier (S.J.) send regards. P.S. The writer has no envelopes large enough to contain the engraving. He will either send it by Edward or bring it with him to Williamsburg.

Frenaye, M(ark) A.: Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to Archbishop (Anthony) Blanc: N(ew) Orleans, (Louisiana)

Mr. LeCote(?) has just made the last payment on his balance; Frenaye had promised to send it to Blanc. Poor LeCote(?) never seems to win. His son, too cannot get steady employment; Frenaye hopes bad luck will not always follow him. Frenaye is still interested in the case of Mr. Poulhouze; it was because of Frenaye that Poulhouze came to this country. He is at the age when he needs things for the end of his life. Frenaye would hear any news of a change in Poulhouze with pleasure. He should change his name and go to the west coast. He is well educated and speaks well in French, English and Spanish and could do much good. (P.S.) Cataracts(?) have taken away his right eye and half of his left; it is difficult to see what he has written.

Martin received (Blanc)'s letter of the 14th which announced the opening of the Second Provincial Council (of New Orleans) on January 22. Martin accepts the responsibility of the closing sermon in French. If the Fathers at the Council deem it opportune he would like them to take measures to halt the alarming growth of secret societies, particular Free-Masonry which is being reorganized everywhere, and whose Scottish rite lodges attract the rich, at the same time that the others under different denominations attract the young people of the working classes of the poor. He also wishes steps to be taken to increase the zeal of the clergy for the Christian education of children and the enrollment of the faithful in the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. Finally he hopes the Fathers will unite in a public protest against the insults to Pope (Pius IX) by the Revolution. He cannot bring any one with him; he has too few priests. He is going to write to the Jesuits to obtain a theologian from them. He plans to be at Milliken's Bend Sunday, the 15th, from where he will go to Natchez to visit Bishop (William Henry) Elder and be in N(ew) Orleans the 20th or 21st. It is a hard winter and his rheumatism has bothered him the last two.

Pourret, Father (Francis) X(avier): Grand Rapids, (Michigan)
to Bishop (Peter Paul Lefevere): (Detroit, Michigan)

The receipt of Lefevere's letter of December 17 scared Pourret a little but he supposes it is Bishop (Armand Francois M. de) Charbonnel of Toronto who wants him to give up the deed of the schoolhouse Pourret built at his own expense. For peace sake he sends it to Lefevere to transfer to Charbonnel. The schoolhouse cost him $450. He told M. Koch to write the trustees to pay him back $200 which Pourret intended to give towards the establishment of the Sisters. Should that thing of importance Lefevere wants to communicate be anything else, Pourret is not afraid. Lefevere has a letter telling of a fault of which he was guilty four years ago. He hopes to atone for the punishment due to it. Pourret will visit Lefevere on December 26. P.S. Should the deed be all the satisfaction required, Lefevere is to let him know before he starts; if it has not been asked, Lefevere is to keep it.

Mrs. Littell lives with her son-in-law, Dr. E. Millard, at Grand Coteau. Her infirmities prevent her attendance at church and she has asked Abbadie to say Mass at the home. Can he? And how many times? Also for people and others unable to travel, may he say Mass at another place even if it is only about 3 or 4 miles from the Church? Abbadie asks (Blanc) to ask Father Raymond to keep on at Prairie Laurent as he has done before. (He presents questions on marriage difficulties, giving six problems, five of which concern slaves).

Daniel S.J. (Father) Ch.: Paris, (France)
to Orestes A. Brownson: (Elizabeth, New Jersey)

In the name of all the editors Daniel thanks Brownson for the kind attitude he has taken toward the "Etudes de Theologie." Brownson's stand has given them new courage. One great trouble is in finding a suitable period for issuing it as Daniel does not find the French public very receptive on such subjects as are offered in this periodical. Brownson's recommendation will carry great weight in France. Fr. (Bernard) O'Reilly (S.J.) will give Brownson the series of their publication. In the absence of Father (Ivan S.) Gagarin (S.J.) he recommends the Russian question. Verdiere and de Ruck have also treated this subject from different points of view. He wishes Brownson to write something on this question. Fr. Gagarin will write to Brownson about this when he returns.

O'Connor, M(ichael), Bishop of Pittsburgh: Munich, (Germany)
to Bishop (Peter Paul Lefevere: Detroit, Michigan)

O'Connor has heard that Bishop (Frederick) Rese is at Hildesheim in Hanover. His mind has given way to a great degree. Lefevere may want to ask a transfer of property from him. Madame (Sister Mary Frances Vindevoghel) Vandevoghel may be on the lookout for Rese. She has a knack of getting her applications receive a kind of sanction of Rome with which she may obtain grants of property she claims in Detroit. Rese is now in an institution of the Sisters of Charity. O'Connor is told that the Bishop of Hildesheim has been written to from Rome to make inquiries of Bishop Rese. O'Connor suggests that Father (Peter) Kindekens would be a proper person to transact any business Lefevere might have with him.

The first, who is to be a Choir-Sister, took the name of Sister St. Joseph and the lay-sister, that of Sister Ste. M(ary) Magdeleine. The first is a Bohemian orphan whose parents died in Texas. The other is a German girl a bit older. Their remaining three postulants have just entered, Sister St. Louis, who is with the Ursulines at Montpellier, writes occasionally; she seems very happy and has asked for news of Blanc.

Burnett recognized Purcell's letter of the 19th and will answer all requests promptly. The first 1000 copies of his book will be ready about January 10th and 300 of them are to be sent to California and Oregon. Burnett regrets that he could not be with Purcell on Christmas but he must be in New York while the printing is going on. He will try to visit him later if his health will permit. He caught a cold while attending the lecture of Dr. Cahill. There is a Fair being held in the city for the aid of the Sisters of Mercy. Burnett notices the difference in climate between New York and California and has had his nose and cheeks frost-bitten. He is gratefull to Purcell for the interest he has shown and has tried to make the book strictly Catholic. The book contains truths concerning the Church and of the two non-Catholics who have read it, one has been converted and the other, the proof reader, desires a copy. Burnett hopes his book will do good.

Benoit, Father J(ulian): (Fort Wayne, Indiana)
to Archbishop John B(aptist) Purcell: of Cincinnati, Ohio

Bishop Amadeus) Rappe has sent him Purcell's answer concerning the case of Bishop (John Henry) Luers versus Toledo. As Purcell says there is not even a shadow of foundation for Benoit's assertions. Benoit says he had advised Luers to reconcile himself to being bishop of Fort Wayne lest he lose the esteem of his flock. Then Luers told him of his ideas about Toledo—how for the territory Rappe would give Luers, Rappe would receive in return additional territory from the diocese of Cincinnati. Benoit thought from what Luers said that he had spoken to Purcell, but he now sees that it was but another of Luers' dreams. He wrote to Rappe only on request. He regrets that he had anything to do with the matter. P.S.—Purcell did not spare compliments to the people of Louisiana and they remember his visit. Bishop Luers has given up imaginary changes and is resigned to the realities of his position.

to Archbishop John Baptist Purcell: Cincinnati, Ohio

McMahon, after receiving Purcell's communication to Hamden, went instantly to Jackson and paid in full the debt on the church. The receipt is enclosed. He is going to Zaleski today to arrange for the winter. Jackson will be only 14 miles from him and he can go there twice a day by the cars. He has not seen Father (James B.) O'Donoghue since he was at Wilkesville but he has heard that many were mortified at the way O'Donoghue mixed freely with those who concocted the villainy against McMahon. O'Donoghue even dined with the ring-leader of them. Mr. Durbin and several others from Wilkesville cried bitterly for McMahon's not attending them. He promised Durbin to say Mass next week in his house-many wish to go to their Christmas duties. McMahon will do this with Purcell's permission. (Enclosed is) a receipt dated December 24, 1859 and signed by William B. Stell saying McMahon paid $77 in full of a balance due on the same of the Catholic Church in Jackson.)

He thinks Archbishop (John) Hughes could secure it from President (James) Buchanan. John Kelly, High Sheriff of New York, could secure it from (Howell) Cobb, the Secretary of Treasury. Dr. (Jeremiah W.) Cummings has influence with Kelly; Brownson should see Cass, backed by some of these influences. Brownson's letters should be sent to Edwards Stubbs at the State Department in Washington. The greatest difficulty is the lack of time.  to (Orestes A. Brownson: Elizabeth, New Jersey)

Arnold, of the Catholic University of Ireland, emboldened by Brownson's urging of American Catholics to send their sons to their University, informs him that there is a new house opened for boarders. He sends a circular to Brownson and wonders how he could give it the necessary publicity in America. He is a son of Dr. (Thomas) Arnold of Rugby and a professor of English at the University. It is not making as rapid progress as its friends would desire. If the bishops of Ireland would appoint an able rector, the new rector could make the University proceed rapidly. Father (John Henry) Newman ceased to reside in Dublin almost a year before he resigned.

O'Reilly, S.J., Father B(ernard): Fordham, (New York)
to (Orestes A. Brownson: Elizabeth, New Jersey)

O'Reilly has just read (Brownson's) first article of the January number: it is all he expected. Father (Edward) Doucet (S.J.) tells him he could not help shedding tears in reading it. To think that Brownson could have been so misunderstood and misrepresented on an argument of such vital importance to the defenders of the Catholic truth is too bad. The December number of "Etudes (de Theologie)" contains a chapter from the forthcoming life of Father (Gustave Xavier Lacroix) de Ravignan, (S.J.) by his superior and friend, Father (Armand de Ponlevoy, S.J.) Pontlevoy. O'Reilly's eye fell on a letter which leads him to believe that God, by so punishing Brownson, is using him for a great and lasting purpose. His labors will not perish with the present generation.
