He presents Hudson with the papers on the Indian question formulated by the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions. He asks Hudson to cooperate with him by informing our Catholic population of its duties in regard to our Catholic Indians. He feels that with the full support of the Catholic press, clergy, and laity, and with the effective aid of the Catholic Indian Missionary Associations which are being systematically established throughout the country the Indian problem can be solved. Mention should be made in the Ave Maria that the Holy Father has blessed this benevolent work. He encloses a pamphlet for publication with the instructions that its contents are applicable to all dioceses where the Indian Missionary Associations are approved. He requests that several copies of the Ave Maria containing this information be sent to the Bureau for filing.

Howe, Rose B.F.: (Chesterton, Indiana)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She asks Hudson to send her a copy of a recent issue of the Ave Maria. The Howe's are grateful to Hudson for his prompt and courteous response to their inquiry regarding the remainder of Miss Wieker's bill at St. Mary's. Since her story about St. Dominic does not fulfill all the required specifications she will not be disappointed if Hudson does not accept it. She believes that Italian Catholics are worthy of much more respect than most people show toward them and at least as much as other Catholic nationalities of Europe deserve. According to her, Charles Dudley Warner's account of Jerusalem is an unadulterated lie. Because of her human frailty she fears that in expressing herself she sometime may slander a whole class of people thereby offending God. She asks Hudson to wait until he has the entire story before he gives it a title.

A young lady has come to him desiring to enter a religious community but desiring not to tell her father who is evil and an apostate. DeGertere fears for his safety. A man seeks absolution to whom he wishes to deny it because of his evil condition by living with another than his wife. He has children by the second woman and lives with her. Despite his promise to leave the woman, DeGertere does not think he will do it. There is in the parish of the Holy Family a woman who has a sick child which is 3 years old. Dr. Kusmick has spoken to Purcell of the child which has the name of Jaco. P.S. This morning he had a visit from a protestant asking him to preach in English saying that he had his family with him and that there were two preachers who wanted to hear him preach. DeGertere agreed and received one of the preachers in his house afterward. He hopes God will give them the grace to come back to the church.

(Brownson), Orestes (A. Jr.): Dubuque, Iowa
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Orestes thanks Henry for sending him the $143 on account of (Brownson's) estate. It seems overpowering to think that Sarah (M. Brownson Tenney) is no more on earth. Now Orestes and Henry are all that are left of that once large and apparently lasting family of father, mother, seven sons and a daughter. What changes a few years have brought about, all sad. Henry's letter affords Orestes very great consolation in telling of the happy manner of dear sister's death; if well prepared and ready what matter a little sooner or later, except indeed to the orphan children. If there should even be anything Orestes could do for them, be may be counted upon. He has heard that Judge (William J.) Tenney is well off, tolerably rich so that temporarily the children will not suffer. Orestes' youngest child Charles Augustus Brownson is very sick of the measles; he is two years old and not much can be done for him.
