Gleeson in the Black Hills?

Browning, C.K.: Jefferson Parish, L(ouisian)a
to Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph) Perché: New Orleans, L(ouisian)a

At a meeting last Sunday at Holy Angels Church a subscription list was opened for the support of a pastor and to repair the church and make habitable the pastorate. There is no doubt that there will be a sufficiency of means collected to make the support of a pastor and the repairs are an assured fact. Browning trusts that the effort will warrant Perché's giving them a resident pastor.

Chauvin, Father J.E.: Mansura, (Louisiana)
to Bishop F(rancis) S(avier) Leray: (New Orleans, Louisiana)

The mission Leray has given them in regard to Father (L. Julien) Galop shows that they have Leray's confidence. But Chauvin would like to know that precise points of accusation. For this it is necessary that they have the signatures and complaints if any are written from Avoyelles. The thing is so grave for the future of a priest. They have not yet heard anything very serious about him. Is it drinking, is it gambling, or the other vice which is so degrading. Chauvin will keep Leray informed.

Hilliard received the check for 450 francs in payment of the interest for 1882 on the sum loaned in Hilliard's name to (Perché)'s diocese. This sum belongs to two persons and is their only resource in their old age. These persons would never think of asking payment of the sum of (Perché) could live forever. Bishop (Francis Xavier) Leray has refused to recognize this debt and if (Perché) disappeared, all hope would be lost. That is why Hilliard joins these ladies in asking (Perché) to repay them. Hilliard believes that they would consent to leave their funds in (Perché)'s diocese for some years if the new administration would guarantee the capital and interest.

 to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray: N(ew) O(rleans, Louisiana)

In compliance with Leray's request last Thursday, Harnais sends the required statement. Against the known prohibition of the Archbishop, Sister M(ary) of St. Francis. (M.H.C.) had a fair given for the benefit of her academy. Each night was concluded with dances. Sister knew that she was giving scandal to the Catholics for they also are aware that round dances, waltzes, and polkas are forbidden by the Church. Harnais has asked the Archbishop and the Provincial of the Sisters to recall Sister St. Francis immediately.

Haviland, Father Arthur P.: Bustleton, Phila(delphia, Pennsylvania)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is not sure whether he has any old numbers of Brownson's Review. Having just moved here his library is in a confused state. This is a quiet place but the congregation is very poor. The Archbishop consented to give the mortgage but was prevented by a ring of intemperate priests who care about nothing but money. P. S. A savage attack has been made on him by bigots in Philadelphia.

Howe, Frances R.: (Chesterton, Indiana)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Hudson should send the books by express to Porter Station. Regarding the "Record" Howe says Hudson may do whatever he wishes with it, for this will honor Rose (Howe's) memory. Howe encloses a translation. Father H. Geiger is known in South Germany as the author of "Lydia", he devotes himself to composing classic literature for Catholic youth. Geiger led the South German pilgrimage, which in 1871 went to Rome to protest against the movement in behalf of (Johann) Dollinger to Pope Pius IX. She requests a copy of the Ave Maria containing an account of Louise Lateau. Howe has recovered from her fall and wishes Father (Ernst) Van Dyke would recover from his. She asks where she can get an original of "Rosa Ferrucci" which appeared in the Ave Maria. Does Hudson think that when Bishop (Joseph) Dwenger replied he thought of Mr. Fowler and not them.

Mènard, Father L(eonard): Alexandria, (Louisiana)
 to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray: N(ew) O(rleans, Louisiana)

Mènard was called to Colfax, (Louisiana) last week to steps toward erecting a church. There are over 200 Catholics around Colfax. Mr. Lane now at Colfax, has promised to give a lot for the church; his wife being the owner, the deed has to be drawn up in New Orleans. The site is Smithfield Plantation; the lot fronting the Red River. Lane referred Mènard to F.W. Baker who has charge of the wife's business and to Andrew J. Hero who is to draw up the act of donation and to Mrs. Lane. Mr. Boyce of Cotile, (Louisiana) called on Ménard and asked him to go to that little village in which there will be great facilities for building a church. There is a railroad depot there; Most of the officers and workers are Catholic. If Leray gives Mènard power of attorney, he will have the deed drawn up. Besides the railroad workers, there are a dozen planters. Three weeks ago Mènard asked authorization to join a religious order. He renews his demand.

About six months ago Mrs. (S.C.) Colmesvil, Murphy's mother, wrote to Perché to know if the could discover anything relative to Murphy's father, J.G. Colmesvil being in the battle of New Orleans. If any one gives an affidavit they could secure the person without any difficulty. Not being a regularly enlisted soldier, Colmesvil's name was not recorded here; he was placed as interpreter in the quartermaster's department. Murphy's mother is well.

While in New York, Ryder saw (Maurice Francis) Egan, who introduced him to H. C. Brunner, editor of Puck. He will finish the article on Hawker in about 10 days. The Catholic Quarterly noticed Ryder's book, now he is waiting to see what Father (Matthew) Russell will say concerning the book. A notice of the Annual appeared in the (Boston) Transcript, January 30th. Ryder sends a copy to Hudson and to Professor (Joseph) Lyons.

Boursetty, J(ules) de: Paris, (France)
to Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph Perché: New Orleans, Louisiana)

If the solutions which (Perché) fears and which Bishop (Francis Xavier Leray) is instigating were solutions one could put up with them, but they would remedy nothing. A bankruptcy would leave the diocese in the same situation. They cannot understand why (Leray) favors it. In his letter to (E.) d'Aquin (Leray) does not approve of a payment of 8000 francs made to Boursetty in 1881. (Boursetty here relates the transactions in which he has been involved in regard to the New Orleans finances and gives his advice on the solution). Boursetty leaves for Rome March 7. (Perché) will have heard about the Union Generale bank. All their friends, Eugène Veuillot among them, are ruined. Politics was not a stranger in the event; they wished to strangle the Catholics. It is important that (Perché) have a representative, Leray seems to be the one. P.S. Boursetty has finally succeeded for Mr. Théar(d).

Buffard, Father Theo(dore): Galveston, Texas
to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray: New Orleans, (Louisiana)

Buffard thought when he returned lately from New Orleans that his troubles would be at an end. 2 or 3 priests denied Buffard's authority; they wrote to the Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph Perché) and the Archbishop condemned him. In New Orleans the Archbishop declared that by his papers, Buffard was the lawful authority and the administrator of the diocese and issued the circular Leray may have read. 2 or 3 priests found fault with the appointment of Father (Victor) Gury as a councillor. The Archbishop then substituted the name of Father (J.L.) Bussant who is the "corypheus" of the rebellion. The priests all over the diocese were indignant that Gury should be excluded from the council when Buffard had asked for him. The Archbishop then reintegrated Gury but also wanted Bussant as a councillor. The priests and Buffard would not submit to that. The Sisters (of the Incarnate Word) at the hospital refuse to recognize Buffard's authority and never accepted the chaplain appointed, Father (Joseph) Quérat; they wanted Bussant. About 12 days ago, two Sisters went to New Orleans and the Archbishop, being a labyrinth of contradictions, sent a notice that he appointed Bussant confessor of the Sisters at the hospital and orphanage. Buffard has refused to give Bussant jurisdiction. Buffard writes to Leray for advice. Buffard now understands more of the difficulty of Leray's position. The council will send to Rome a protest against the contradictory interferences of the Archbishop.

Jenkins, Father T(homas) J.: Hardinsburg, K(entuck)y
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Jenkins has been learning Italian. Humor (Anna Hanson) Dorsey all she needs. Jenkins can stand back for any of Hudson's real contributors. If Hudson sends "Miriaume" Jenkins will go over it again. He is not going to send Hudson a notice of M(onsi)g(no)r (Thomas) Preston's book. It looks like a rehashed work. Jenkins asks Hudson to thank Father Edmund (Hill, C.P.), for his inquiries. Jenkins never heard from Father (Matthew) Russell, S.J. Why did (Eliot) Ryder choose "Better Christmas" as a sole specimen?

Duchene, Father Hipp(oly)te: St. Lawrence, France
to Bishop (Francis Xavier Leray?: New Orleans, Louisiana)

On the advice of (Charles?) Roth-le Gentil, banker of Cambrai, Duchene writes for information on the loan of New Orleans. Are the bonds of New Orleans safe? Would the coupons be paid regularly? Lately Duchene presented some coupons at the Bank of Paris and they refused to pay them. Duchene makes a proposal to the Catholic Society of New Orleans of which (Leray) is the president, ex officio. Duchene would give 100 france to whomever would repay him immediately. For 2000 francs he would receive only 1900 and Duchene would send his certificates. These would be paid on presentation to the secretariat of the Archbishopric. Duchene has great need of money. P.S. Duchene would like to render (Leray) a service comparable to that he asks but he knows that he is too little for that. (P.P.S.) In case of need Duchene gives the numbers and amounts of his bonds.

Verdan, C.S.C., Father F. M.: New Orleans, L(ouisiana)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Brother Romanus informed Verdan that Hudson is Editor of the Scholastic, which pleases Verdan. Verdan sent a dollar for twenty copies of the Scholastic, number twenty-one, but received only four copies. Since thirty-five students have applied for this issue of the Scholastic he wonders if Hudson can supply the needed number. Verdan thanks Hudson for publishing an article on their St. Isidore Society. So far the school is a success, for the only place that is empty is the infirmary, the rest of the house being so well filled, they may have to begin turning away new applicants.

On the same paper is written:

Scherer, C.S.C., Father J(oseph): New Orleans, L(ouisiana)

Baring) Gould's memoir is unsatisfactory to Catholic readers, since he maintains that (Robert Stephen) Hawker's baptism and reception into the church resulted from coercion. The Annual was noticed in the (Boston) Transcript on January 30th. Ryder sends copies to Hudson and Joseph (Lyons). The sonnets to "D.E.H." appeared in the Transcript of February 4; Ryder sent six copies to Hudson. Today, he mailed the Boston Gazette and the Boston Carrier.

Harnais, Father M(athurin): Plaquemine, (Louisiana)
to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray: New Orleans, (Louisiana)

Harnais is writing to Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph) Perché a letter of which he believes he should give Leray a copy. (The copy of the letter states that) two weeks ago Harnais asked Perché to change Sister St. Francis, (M.H.C.) as directress of the convent. The reasons given were that his Sister had held a fair, against Perché's prohibition, at which dances were held every night and a skit on marriage which greatly scandalized the real Catholics. Because of her they were to send a petition against Harnais to Perché. If Sister did not consent to the fair she should not have worked at it. She is still working to divide the parish as she did on the occasion of the school for the little colored girls. If this Sister is not removed, Harnais will be forced to open a parish school and regard the Sisters (Marianites of Holy Cross) as no longer of his parish. This is what Harnais wrote to Perché he hopes Leray will put a stop to it.

Seymour, Mary Alice: (New York, New York)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Seymour thanks Hudson for the money which arrived today. When she first came to New York, Seymour was promised many pupils, a position as teacher of English literature, and an offer to lecture at the Gardiner Institute, but all were withdrawn. The Reverend Charles Gardiner head of the Institute declined to fulfill the engagement when he learned Seymour was a Catholic. She asks what is the title of the other paper Hudson publishes and offers to write articles for it. She was happy to read the notice about Father Patrick Cuddihy's anniversary at Milford, Massachusetts.

Quérat, Father J(oseph): Galveston, (Texas)
to Archbishop N(apoleon) J(oseph) Perché: (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Father S(tephen) Buffard has read to Quérat Perché's letter in which Perché qualifies as an unworthy priest, him who would revenge himself on the sick; Quérat is of the same opinion. The following facts will show that there has been no revenge except on the part of those misdirected Sisters. Quérat visited the sick in the Infirmary every day for 2 months until February 4. The (Sisters of the Incarnate Word) are rich, yet they never gave Quérat a cent. The revenged themselves on account of the removal of Father (John) Chandy, (C.M.). Quérat withdrew to show that he would not encourage insults to the oldest priest of the diocese. He has presented his resignation. He still visits the poor sick. Perché is to excuse the mistakes of a nearly blind priest.

Howe thanks Hudson for the copies of the Ave Maria and requests three copies of the number that contains Monsignor Foschi's letter. She is sorry that one or two persons, who Howe does not care to mention, should not see that Foschi did not think it proper to address her personally. Howe received the Scholastic containing the article she wrote at the behest of Mother Angela, but it should not have been published since it is not her style of writing. She asks Hudson to quote a price for the "Record" which she wrote, that she might tell her friends, so that they will buy the remaining copies. Howe requests Hudson send copies of the treatise on Purgatory. She has never seen Bishop (William) Ullathorne work; does it give the history of the discussion.

Laporte, Father J(ea)n P(ier)re: Alfort, (France)
to Archbishop (Napoleon Joseph) Perché: New Orleans, (Louisiana)

Since today Perché speaks of the miserable people in the same language that Laporte has used for more than 6 years, Laporte writes again, hoping that Perché will consider what Laporte tells him. There is no salvation for Perché's diocese except in suspending the Coadjutor (Bishop Francis Xavier Leray), in making a case of it at Rome and asking Propaganda to give him Father (Hippolyte) Leneuf as a replacement. After Card(inal) Simeoni received Perché's letter the Commander told Simeoni that if he were in Perché's place, he would suspend his coadjutor and order all his priests to pay Perché the ordinary revenues. The Cardinal replied that he could only approve it. The Count would go to Rome to pursue the case on these conditions.

What does Leray think of the rumor that Bishop (William Henry) Elder is going to Rome as Cardinal. Adelaide's father and mother wish to be remembered to Leray; Willy wishes to come down in June for the exhibition. Julia Elder is with Adelaide; Julia is much pleased with Natchez. Adelaide is sure that Leray would meet a hearty welcome at Elder's brother's. There are great improvements in Natchez; a sacristy is to be built and the church cleaned. Adelaide wishes it had been done in Elder's time.

Beccard, Father Amédée: Bay St. Louis, (Mississippi)
to Bishop (Francis) Xavier Leray: (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Beccard hopes to be able to resume his ministry after Easter. A sister whom he has at Lyons has had many prayers said for him. Towards the beginning of May, Beccard will ask a committee of three confreres to consider his affairs with the pastor of Biloxi. The injustices of Father (Peter) Chevalier demand redress, even restitution. For 22 years Beccard has borne a terrible evil. His misfortunes led him to Biloxi to Chevalier but his true place was at the home of Father Henry Leduc. Leduc's trip to Brittany in the summer of 1879 led Beccard to Biloxi whence he escaped as from a prison last December 19. Leray studied at the seminary of Rennes. Imagine if the Superior had told him that he was only there as a beggar without a sou so he would have to perform the heavy work of the house. Imagine if he had had only 2 meals. That is only a shadow of Chevalier's arrogance. Beccard's services at the church consisted of serving Mass, opening and closing the doors, ringing the bells. For requiem High Masses, Chevalier gave him a little glass of whiskey. Outside the church, Beccard went to the postoffice 3 or 4 times a day, to the grocery for the "boss" and the servant made Beccard a second servant to bring in water, repair fences, etc. Beccard submitted, thinking the time would come when before Leray or Archbishop Perché the would be guaranteed remuneration. Beccard asks if he does not have the right to demand from Chevalier at least 10 piastres a month which would make $310 for 31 months and an apology. Beccard asks that all settlement with Chevalier be postponed until May 1 and that then a committee will decide how much Chevalier owes Beccard. P.S. With Leduc Beccard has been treated as he should be. Beccard would be delighted to hear Leray shares his opinion.

Ryder, Eliot: Dorchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ryder's illness is worse, which prevents him from doing the orders that would pay a good sum. His work is not as congenial as was editing the New York Catholic, but it gives him a living. He would like to be the one who fulfills Hudson's needs by writing a monthly article on a Catholic celebrity for the Ave Maria. Concerning the book, it is of interest to Catholics alone, although Ryder had hoped it would excite Protestant interest to investigate literary work of Catholics and thus remove popular prejudice. Ryder asks Hudson to believe that he is grateful for the favors he received from Notre Dame. Hudson need not tell Ryder he is too stern in giving deserved reproach, Ryder thinks Hudson is not adept in rebuking as he is in consoling. He is glad that Hudson was pleased with the sonnetts and thanks him for permission to use it in the (Boston) Transcript. Ryder is glad that Father W.'s "Garfield" overshadowed the other usual obituary features.

She never expects to make money on a volume of poetry, although she does not expect to lose it for she is sure she can sell the Sisters of Notre Dame, two hundred copies. Mannix does not admire Mr. (Patrick) Hickey for he is such a toady to a certain clique and never has a kind word for a good cause, such as the Land League. Mannix expresses her opinion at great length about the Land League and Irish patriotism. The Catholic World published some of the verses about Ireland in their March number. Mannix did not think much of Nugent Robinson's story. She asks Hudson to thank Professor (Joseph) Lyons for sending the Scholastic Annual.

Forge has just received (Perché)'s letter; it is a consolation to have the sympathy of a bishop. The rumor of Forge's change to Vermillionville was like a thunderbolt. Jews, Catholics, and Protestants are indignant at the idea of another priest taking his place. They already know the calumnies he has brought against Forge. Tomorrow, Mr. Mouton, Judge Rignes, Mr. Girard, Gerac, and Martial Martin are to go to New Orleans to explain the sentiments of the parish. They also plan to see Father (Antoine) Borias and to express their resolve not to receive him in the parish. Forge will write to Cardinal Simeoni and explain the position in which he finds himself.
