(Colin)de Verdiere, L(eon): Paris, (France)
to Bishop (Francis Xavier) Leray: (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Pope Leo XIII gave the Association of the Propagation of Faith a mark of his benevolence in the encyclical promoting the jubilee of last year. But these alms are transitory and needs are permanent. Therefore they address a new plea for further extension in Leray's diocese. The system they prefer is to form groups of ten, each to give 2 fr(ancs), 60 c(entimes) a year for a total of 26 fr(ancs). But if Leray thinks that another system would succeed better, he may choose that method. Whatever the method, it is important that the Association be set up in each parish. Certes (also signs as) treasurer.

He is negotiating with the rector to return to Louvain to take a course of study in scripture and theology. Father Edmund (Hill), C.P., wrote saying he was busy with his duties at the Sacred Heart Retreat in Louisville. Jenkins inquires if Hill did not write stanzas for the fourteen stations of the Cross, before, which were published in the Catholic World. He thinks they are exquisite. Hudson should note in the Ave Maria that Benjamin Dion Hill and Father Edmund Hill, C.P., are the same person. Jenkins does not wish to give a notice of Monsignor (Thomas) Preston's book.

to Ja(me)s A(lphonsus) McMaster: (New York), New York

The Jesuits of Toledo request an account of a trial in Rome at which a Bishop, attired in full robes, appeared in his own defense. This incident occurred about 2 years ago it is believed. McMaster will notice on the list of subscribers Thornbury sends, that the (Jesuit) Order has renewed its subscription. The priests at Monroe, Mich(igan) have asked Thornbury to register their displeasure over remarks made in the "Pastoral" in the issue of the Freeman's Journal of April 29, (1882). These priests were about to cancel their subscription but later they changed their minds. Mr. R.R. Elliott, of Detroit, Mich(igan), a subscriber for 40 years sends his regards along with Dr. Reilly of St. Patrick's Church, Teledo. He hopes Mr. Egan has recovered his health. P.S. Father T. Hauser, S.J., of St. Mary's Church, Toledo requests the account of the trial.

Buffard, Father Theo(dore): Galveston, Texas
to James A(lphonsus) McMaster: (New York, New York)

Buffard sends McMaster $21.50. $9. of this is to be credited to his subscriptions to the Freeman's Journal, and $12.50 is to be given to the J. Turgis Co(mpany) when they call. He hopes McMaster and his family are in good health. His occupations and cares have made it difficult to write McMaster in person, let alone see him in person, so the closest he can come is to meet McMaster in the pages of the Freeman's Journal. In case Almighty God does not grant him the life span of Nestor or one of the patriarchs of old, McMaster, the hero-veteran of the press, can act as another Moses warning the people until his hands grow too feeble to hold the pen. The diocese is very pleases with its new Bishop and Buffard dares to predict an era of prosperity there. He asks that the letters V.G. be erased from his address since there is no Vicar General in the diocese and there will be none for some time.

Howe, Frances R.: (Chesterton, Indiana)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Howe thinks the introduction to "Record of a Suffering Soul" appropriate. In Hudson's hands it will be a success, all 3000 copies. Hudson did right in putting his name on the copyright. She does not care about the form of the advertisement, so long as it appears in the Ave Maria. How strange that Doctor Hallinan should be with Father Aegidius (Hennemann, O.S.B.). Howe wrote Father (William) Kilroy, he was surprised to receive her request concerning the "Record of a Suffering Soul". Daisy Garnett, because of her worldliness, has scandalized a number of people. Howe requests Hudson pray for her.

1882 May 15
H(udson), C.S.C., Father D(aniel) E.: Notre Dame, Indiana
to Kehoe, Lawrence: (New York, New York)

Hudson was sorry to find Bishop (John L.) Spalding's essay on the Virgin Mary reprinted in the volume that Kehoe has just issued, without reference to the Ave Maria for which it was originally written. Hudson holds the copyright. It is true Hudson did not pay for the essay, but did not offer remuneration for fear of giving offense. The volume was given favorable notice in the Ave Maria and the Scholastic. Hudson is not unfriendly to the Catholic Publishing Society, but it seems it is unfriendly to Notre Dame. If Kehoe's publications are not purchased extensively at Notre Dame, it is because Father (Timothy) Maher, C.S.C., has reasons of his own for buying other books. The Catholic World either avoids noticing everything emanating from Notre Dame or goes out of its way to say something unfavorable. Hudson received the Catholic World as a subscriber rather than send the Ave Maria where it was not welcome. Hudson heard that Father (Isaac) Hecker spoke disparagingly of the Ave Maria to a London Catholic publisher some years ago, while another of the Paulist Fathers had dissuaded a lady in Detroit from subscribing to it. Hudson does not write in anger, but he is conscious of having self-respect and he wishes to know where he stands. He thinks the Scholastic had better be discontinued to the Catholic World, and Kehoe's publications should not be sent here to either periodical for review. Kehoe will not be troubled with anything published at Notre Dame. Hudson has yet to speak unkindly or do injury to the Catholic Publishing Society or the Congregation of St. Paul.

Richards, H(enry) L.: Winchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The copy of the Indo-European Correspondence, which Hudson sent, proved an agreeable surprise. The thought of being allowed to speak for the "good cause" among the heathens of India pleases Richards. He thanks Hudson for the copies of the Ave Maria and the Scholastic. Richards considers the Scholastic one of the most interesting college publications. Yesterday, Richards had the pleasure of riding home with an old school mate of Hudson's, Father Michael Murphy of Woburn.

I(nfant) J(esus), Sister Mary of: New Orleans, (Louisiana)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Mother Teres de Jesus sends Hudson four numbers of this year's "Annals de Carmel". They are sent to give the readers of the Ave Maria a fuller account of the approaching tri-centennial of their Seraphic Mother St. Teresa. Since they do not have a chapel, they would appreciate Hudson's publishing an article on the occasion of their tri-centennial setting forth their need for financial support. They plan to organize a committee of ladies and gentlemen to aid them and they would like a priest from the Congregation of Holy Cross to be the director of it.

Kehoe, L(awrence): New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Bishop (John Lancaster) Spalding is responsible for the omission in his book, since not Kehoe but Spalding read the proof. The Catholic Publication Society Company is neither unfriendly to Notre Dame, nor is its attitude influenced by trade with the University. Kehoe can not see that the C.P.S.C. has been discourteous to Notre Dame. The Paulists own the Catholic World, but not the Society; they never get a dollar from the Society and the Paulists pay for matter published by the Society for them. The Catholic World is controlled by Father Isaac Hecker, Mr. Gallway is assistant editor. Kehoe can not get a notice of their book because Hecker won't allow them. "Christian Schools" was not noticed on this account. Because Kehoe could not get good notices of their books he started the Bulletin. He has never heard Hecker speak disparagingly of Notre Dame. Kehoe wondered when Hudson paid for the Catholic World and he paid in return for the Ave Maria now he understands. Concerning yearbooks, Notre Dame has published few, but the one that Kehoe knows of, that being Eliot Ryder's work on poetry, which was sent for notice and was wretched, Kehoe got Galwey to let up with a short review. He prefers a notice of a book on its merits, for this is the only way Catholic books of the O'Kane Murray type can be eliminated. Kehoe never talks about the good he does, but he believes he advertised Notre Dame. He hopes Hudson will not think him harsh because of his frankness. The Catholic Publication Society Company is owned by George Hecker, who spent $200,000 to bring it to its present improved condition. Since Hecker is growing old, and as Father (Isaac) Hecker is unlikely to be active again, Hecker offered to sell the Catholic Publication Society Company to Kehoe, but he has not the money. The business is well paying now, and will continue so if cut loose from Paulist influence, and could be more independent. The sale of it would not include the Catholic World, that the Paulists would keep. Kehoe can raise $5000 and pay the balance in ten years, but Hecker wants a larger cash down payment. If Hudson knows of anyone who can lend the necessary money, Kehoe is a good risk and will own the C.P.S.C. If no buyer is found, the business will be gradually cut back until it is suspended. This will kill Kehoe, since he gets one quarter of the profits.

Edes sends Hudson the new "Gerarchia". The chains are still on the table, she will give them to Father-General (Edward Sorin, C.S.C.) when he comes to Rome. She submits an article on the Visitation. Edes has been attempting to get Hudson a facsimile of the ring of Perugia. She has exhausted the stock brought her by (Daniel) Paul. There is no truth in the tale relative to Queen Margherita and the repeal of the Pope to allow Mass to be said in the Quirinal. Canon Anzino, royal chaplain-in-chief was granted permission to raise an altar and say Mass in the Quirinal Palace. Apropos that telegram to the Sun relative to the resident papal delegate for America is a canard. Mori, not Father R(?)
