 to Paris, (France)

He sends this letter in care of Mgr. (Francois Maria Benjamin) Richard (archbishop of Paris). The first thing he must do in order to remove the body of Mgr. (Celestine) de la Hailandiere from France to the United States is to get authorization from the minister of the Interior. If he says that he was sent by Mgr. (Francis Silas) Chatard (Bishop of Vincennes, Indiana) to bring the body to America he might get the authorization without any trouble. He tells how Mgr. (Augustin) Verot, (Bishop of St. Augustine, Florida) and himself accomplished the removal of the body of Mgr. (John) Barry, (Bishop of Savannah, Georgia) to America. Yesterday Mme. Trudence whom he asked, answered that the Mayor and municipal council wished to keep the body at Combourg. Therefore he ought not come to Combourg without authorization from the minister of the Interior to remove the body.

to Bishop F(rancis) X(avier) Leray: (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Father (J.M.) Ledreux is working with Zeal. Aubrée hopes to see his congregation soon grow by 2 or 3 families. They need religious books but his means of 300 piastres do not allow him to go ahead. Aubrée has contracted no debts except at the pharmacist's and 19 piastres for the "Faith of Our Fathers" and a few other books. He also owes 30 piastres to the woman who takes care of his house. Aubrée would be very grateful if Leray could aid him in settling last year's accounts and to begin the next year with a few piastres. He has to give Mass stipends to his brother who has been paralyzed for three years. Aubrée's health is not good but better than formerly; he is not at the end of his courage.

Casimire, Brother: Angers, France
to (James Alphonsus) McMaster: (New York, New York)

Brother Casimire tells McMaster that in his school the English language is a part of the curriculum. Consequently, several teachers wish to have a daily publication, which would be used in the study of the language and also as an informative document. One of Casimire's friends who lives in the United States, told him about the Freeman's Journal. Casimire asks McMaster to collect subscriptions for his "Revue". The "Revue" is sent France to the subscribers for the sum of 15 francs a year. Every agent will receive 3 francs for every subscription. Haulleville sends some forms which can be signed by persons interested in becoming subscribers. If McMaster approves of the idea Haulleville could print on the cover of the "Revue" the name of the agent.

Batmale, Remy: New Orleans, Louisiana

The Diocese of New Orleans, organized on August 15, 1866 by an act executed before Octave de Armas, is indebted to Batmale for $1500, with 8 percent interest from December 31, 1879, subject to a credit of $500 paid to the petitioner's attorney, R.L. Belden on May 25, 1882. The diocese failed to meet its promise of payment on September 1, 1882. The note was in part payment of the price of ground in the parish of St. James, bounded above by property of Augustin Troxclair and below by lands of Jean Fancheux. Said property was purchased from Joseph Edmond Brou for $6000 on December 31, 1872. Notes of $1500 each have been paid; the one due is the one sued on. The petitioner prays that Perché be cited to appear.

Edes, E(lla) B.: Rome, (Italy)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

At the request of Bishop (Hebert) Vaughan of Salford, England, Edes resumed writing the "Roman Correspondence" for the (London) Tablet, which she first began in 1880 when she replaced Doctor Brady. Did Hudson see the comment of the (New York) Freeman's-Journal editor, (James McMaster), criticizing the Latin of the Encyclical Anspicatio Concessum, as simple and clearly not that of Leo XIII. McMaster must be happy over his daughter, Helen (McMaster), entering the Carmelites. She thanks Hudson for the picture of Our Lady of Good Counsel and she will send a history of the Shrine of Our Lady at the Augustinian Church of Genazzano. The American Annals of the Sacred Heart sent 600 francs for the monument of Pope Pius IX. Edes is not certain if she sent Hudson the photograph of Pope Pius IX's tomb in the Church of San Lorenzo. Bishop (Richard) Gilmour has not yet arrived in Rome. Edes pities not Miss Cowles for marrying Pomeroy. There is an uproar over the Monsignor (Thomas) Capel affair. He appeared in Rome in June and induced the Holy Office to look into his case. After investigation the Holy Office dismissed the affair with a sentence of non constat which does not proclaim his innocence of the charges brought against him. Capel has received permission to preach in Italy, but he was advised not to go back to England. A monsignor, who arrived from England with a letter from (Henry) Cardinal Manning, is going about moving heaven and earth against Capel.

Ireland, Bishop J(ohn): St. Paul, Minn(esota)
to John O'K(ane) Murray: (Brooklyn, Long Island)

Ireland would be delighted to see Murray residing in St. Paul. Minnesota is a most healthful country. They have no malaria of any kind. In St. Paul with a population of 65,000, the Catholics form one-third, English-speaking Catholics one-sixth. They have two Catholic physicians - Dr. McDonald from Canada and Dr. Dwyer, formerly of Brooklyn. Catholics are well-to-do, rapidly increasing in numbers. Catholics, as a rule, prefer a Catholic physician. Minneapolis is about equally populous with St. Paul, with a somewhat relatively smaller Catholic population. Ireland advises Murray to visit and Study St. Paul before taking any final step.
