1883 Feb. 2
Smith, Elizabeth Oakes: Blue Point, L(ong) I(sland, New York)
to Henry (F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Smith has often thought of Brownson and his father and sister since the Civil War but has just now learned his address. She notes the passing of the years since they have last met. Only Appleton and Alvin are left to her, just as Henry has only one brother left. She is not prosperous and cannot purchase the 15 volumes of his father's works. She appreciates Brownson's domestic life and recalls the simplicity of his father's household in New Jersey. She laments the ostentation of the present day, especially since labor is so poorly paid. She has sent a manuscript to a man named Ellsworth in Detroit of a book concerned with abuses of the working man. She has heard nothing satisfactory from Ellsworth and asks Brownson to look into the matter, if it is not too much trouble. She asks if Brownson ever knew Father O'Reiley, and sends her best wishes to Brownson and his family. Enclosure: clipping of a one inch, one column advertisement of E. Ellsworth, Detroit, Michigan.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The editor of the Herald regrets that Hudson has reason to complain because the Herald did not credit the poem, "The Cry of the Suffering Soul" to the Ave Maria. The blame is laid to a printer who made an error in laying out the print.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Seymour acknowledges the receipt of $8. She has received all the numbers of the Ave Maria except number three. Nugent Robinson's story is good. She wishes there was a Catholic magazine like Harpers to supply stories for Catholic girls 15-25 years of age. Such stories as Robinson's should be spread more widely.

1883 Feb. 4
Severance George: West Radolph, (Vermont)
to (Henry F.) (Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Severance has received the Essay in Refutation of Atheism and hopes to read it soon. He has always respected Brownson's father as an intellectual athlete and has been of assistance in his own reasoning. He has been interested in Brownson's views for many years, an admirer of the Review and of Charles Elwood, but more in harmony with Brownson's views at this period, than at a later time. He calls Brownson the leading contemporary American writer, one who was well aware of the intellectual tendencies of his countrymen, influential in liberating the public mind from the control of Locke. He learned of Henry Brownson from John P. Healy and is anxious to become better acquainted with him and his family. He has often passed the place where Dr. Brownson spent his boyhood in Vermont. He encloses $1 for the book and sends his respects.

Nellie's (Ella Loraine Dorsey) foot is much better. Dr. ( ) Pratt of Chicago must be a first class surgeon. Dorsey sends Part III of "The Story of a Child". She will send "Little Gladys" in about two weeks. Dorsey will write the juvenile and squeeze it into as small a space as possible.

Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The two "Sketches from Life" and "Little Gladys", will serve as two short stories. Congress has passed the Civil Service Bill. Dorsey thinks this will mean the dismissal of many government employees. She protests against the immoral literature which attacks morality and religion that is flooding the country. Father (Isaac) Hecker invited her through Bishop (John J.) Keane to write some articles for the Catholic World, but she feels she cannot write for the Catholic World and the Ave Maria.

Shea, John G(ilmary): Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to R(ichard) R. Elliott: Detroit, (Michigan)

He is very busy. He will be very happy to read proof on the proposed sketch. The Catholic World set is ungracious, the Ave Maria or the American Catholic Quarterly would have been better. He has a curious list in Father (Peter) Potier, (S.J.)'s hand of those who made their Easter duty in Detroit in 1748, '49, '50, '51, '56, '47, '58, '59, '60. They seem to be Detroit folks— Campeau, Navarre, La Paillier, Daniau, de Quindre, Godefroy, Michel Campeau, Mr. LaRoche, Joseph Rouillard, Pilette, Ch. leVert, Mr. le Beau, Mr. Blairmont, Compte la Compte. 80 communicants at Detroit in 1759 was not bad. The list for 1760 is only 4 or 5 names with the note that the rest were the same as before which indicates no desertions. P.S. Shea once printed 100 copies of the Register of Fort DuQuesne. He would do the same for the first register of Detroit if Elliott could give him a copy. He will print 100 copies and give 30 to the Bishop. (Bookplate of Elliott attached)

Stoddard, C(harles) W(arren): Honolulu, H(awaiian) I(sland s)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard received the book and the photo of St. Aloysius, both of which delight him. He was not baptized Charles Warren, but Charles, Joseph, Aloysius, Francisco, Antonio, Benedict, Dominic, Ignatius Sebastian. Has Hudson heard of the Arcadia Society in Rome? While in Rome, Stoddard's friend Bishop (Francis Silas) Chatard introduced him to members of the Society and he received a copy of Odes and Addresses which was issued from the Propaganda. Last evening Stoddard met Father Leonore, Wailuku, who said he had received the copies of the Ave Maria. The Coronation of King Kalakaua took place this morning; it was highly primitive and comically pompous.

Dahlgren, Madeleine Vinton: Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

If Hudson should publish Dahlgren's sketch on Our Lady of Liesse, she would like ten copies. She learned from General Hagen that (Eliot) Ryder, to whom she gave a letter of recommendation for employment, that Hagen would have hired Ryder but he presented himself intoxicated.

Hagen told him that when he could bring a certificate that he did not drink he would hire him. Upon this Ryder left the city.

Lambing, Father A(ndrew) A.: Pittsburgh, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lambing thanks Hudson for the Lourdes water. The flood has forced the closing of his school, and he fears that many of the children will go to the public school. Lambing shortened the last part of his work on Father Lemche because it was becoming difficult. Father Thomas J. Howley, pastor of Lambing's home town parish in Kittannung, (Pennsylvania) died last night. A sketch of Howley's life is enclosed. Lambing saw in a recent issue of the Baltimore Mirror an article to the effect that Father Ambrose Marechal, S.S., later the Archbishop of Baltimore, called on General George Washington and saw a full length picture of the Immaculate Conception at Washington's bedhead.

She comments on a book that is being read quite extensively, (Nicholas Murray) Kirwan's Letters to Archbishop (John) Hughes. If Seymour were at Notre Dame she feels she could be of great assistance to Hudson, because her work on the Home Journal taught her something about editorial duty.
