Gallagher, John J.: New York, (New York)
to (John Al)phon(sus McMaster): (Rio de Janiero, Brazil)

Gallagher supposes that by now John is becoming a real sailor. In New York there is nothing going on except much baseball playing, the Metropolitans being fifth or sixth in the race for the championship. He encloses a clipping about them. John's father is in fair health and taking about him continually. (Maurice Francis) Egan is well and claims to be getting stouter; Cain and Edward are well and ask to be remembered to him. Gallagher sends his best wishes, and asks John for a letter. Enclosure: Clipping from the New York herald of July 1, 1883 containing news of baseball, yachting, other sporting events.

(McMaster, James Alphonsus): (New York, New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Rio de Janiero, Brazil)

He sends John letters from each of his three sisters, an envelope containing five English pounds and directions for getting change for them, and a letter from the editor of a Portuguese Catholic paper. He instructs John to thank Phipps and Company for their courtesy in keeping letters and sending them to John. Regarding the letter from the Portuguese editor, McMaster hopes John will go to see the Father at the Hospital de Santo Bento. He is writing a letter to the Superior, asking him to hand it to the English-speaking priest. McMaster prays for John daily. He urges him to write all he cares to, and to write, if he wishes, to Gertrude. Another United States ship will arrive in Rio before John leaves, and McMaster will send letters by it. He asks to be remembered to Captain McLean. If John has time he should drop into the United States Consul's office at Rio. McMaster will write them, and they like to oblige editors of papers. (Enclosed letters are handled separately.)

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Indiana
 to James F(arnham) Edwards:

Walsh, (C.S.C.), is back and Hudson has delivered the message to him and will not mention the affair to any one else. The washrooms are torn up; they are substituting iron for lead pipes. Father John (O'Connell?) is absent in Logansport and will not return for some time. Mrs. English was ill last Sunday when Hudson was over at St. Mary's. Toohey, (C.S.C.), went to attend the funeral and also that of Archbishop of Cincinnati, (John Baptist Purcell). Word has been sent to Father (Nicholas J.) Sto(e)ffel, (C.S.C.), to inform him of Mr. Cleary's death.

Business is slack at present, and he is without employment. He has had several opportunities to join other printers, but he is out of practice. He will work at a Coney Island hotel as a cashier. Burr, W(illia)m Henry: Wash(ington), D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Rich(ard) H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

The original Bishop (Benedict Joseph) Fenwick letter is supposed to be at Loyola College, Baltimore. Father Ch(arle)s Lancaster, librarian, Georgetown College, wishes to restore it if possible to his library, where it properly belongs. The information sought from Clarke was afterwards obtained in the enclosed pamphlet. In such an embarrassing case as this Burr supposes the Catholic Church will keep silent. But on the other hand will it dare again to bring false accusations against the great and good Thomas Paine?

1883 Jul. 12
Edes, E(lla) B.: Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Crime of every nature is ripe there. To Edes' mind we are fast marching on to communism. She supposes Father General (Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C.), has long since arrived. Edes again missed the chance of sending Hudson the chains. She wanted to send the package by Bishop (Joseph Gregory) Dwenger but the rector of the College objected. Edes hears so many unkind things said about her by their bishops, who render her responsible for the Abbe's (James Alphonsus McMaster?) vagaries, that she never goes near those who come there. It is a pity that readers (?) of Father ( ) O'Brien of the Western Catholic could not hear all the good that is said of Dwenger. What a sad fate it was that the last years of Bishop (John Baptist) Purcell should have been so filled with bitterness. And Archbishop (James Frederick) Wood - a prince among men. What a lesson his will is to some of the cardinals there. (Cardinal) Sangnigni (?) left two million francs to his nephew. Cardinal Catarini's will is being disputed by the heirs. M(onsi)g(no)r Virilli postulates the cause of Benedict Labre. Edes is glad Hudson approves of the letters in the Tablet. She is not responsible for the errors. The interview of the Herald correspondent with (John) Cardinal Simeoni did take place. It was not true as stated by that paper that the interview was held by desire of the Pope. The corollary relative to ( ) Errington and his dejection was false. M(onsi)g(no)r (Thomas) Capel was with the correspondent, one ( ) Meltzer, head of the Paris home of the Herald. Errington is not in disgrace there nor was he the medium of publishing the celebrated letter. He was given a copy after it had been communicated to Archb(is)h(o)p (Thomas William) Croke. Hudson should never be deceived by the Boston Pilot. ( ) Connellan is in with the most advanced Irish party. It is not true that Capel goes on a lecture tour to America to make money. Nor does he go to transact ecclesiastical business or attend to any affairs for Propaganda. It is a pity his vanity leads him so astray. The matter of the promises of Mary Margaret is before the Holy Office.

When the quest is closed, he will send Seton more specific information concerning degrees of relationship.

At the request of Bishop (Richard) Gilmour, Houck sent by express some data on the life of Bishop (Louis Amadeus) Rappe for Clarke's Vol.III of the "Deceased Bishops". Houck has also written some of the priests to gather additional information from parishoners who knew Rappe when he was a missionary on the Maumee. Houck also suggests that Clarke write the following for information: Father Z. Druon, Vicar General, St. Albans, Vermont, who was a lifelong friend of Rappe and has much valuable information on him; Father J(ohn) Monahan, Niles, Ohio, Bishop (Joseph) Dwenger, Father E. Hannin, Toledo, (Ohio), Mother (M.) Austin, Ursuline Convent, Cleveland, O(hio), Father J.F. Callaghan, St. Martins, O(hio), and for Bishop Gilmour's sermon preached at Archbishop (John Baptist) Purcell's funeral. Gibbons, Archbishop James: Cape May, (New Jersey)
to R(ichard) H(enry) Clarke: New York, New York

Clarke's letter has been forwarded to Cape May where he is spending some time for his health. Gibbons can give Clarke very little direct assistance. Father Doane, Monsignor Seton and Archbishop (Michael A.) Corrigan can furnish valuable information with regard to (Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley). Bayley was absent during a great part of his five years administration due to his health. Yet he left the impress of his methodical mind on the diocese, especially by the Synod with its wise rules of discipline. He also consecrated the Cathedral in Centennial year of 1876. Philadelphia then became a metropolitan see owing to his administrations. For more detailed information Gibbons refers Clarke to Father B(ernard) J. McManus, pastor of St. John's Church, Baltimore, who could give many points on Bayley and Father (Placide L.) Chapelle. Gibbons could tell some interesting anecdotes about Bayley if he could talk with Clarke. Regarding Bishop (John) McGill, Bishop (Francis A.) Janssens and Bishop (Thomas A.) Becker might be consulted with profit. A visit and interview in Richmond might be desirable.

Power is now in Arkansas and will call on Hudson on his return.

1883 Jul. 18
Starr, Eliza Allen: Chicago, (Illinois)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Starr would take great pleasure in writing an extended notice on her good and great friend Bishop (John) McMullen. The article which appeared in Freeman's Journal was thrown off in the first hours of a great bereavement but there was much to be added of general interest. Starr has carefully preserved everything relating to the time. For the rest, her personal recollections took in McMullen's career from the time of his return from Rome; and for his life there she could obtain information from Father (Thaddeus) Butler and Father (James J.) McGovern. McMullen's family could give what related to his early life. Starr wants to know when Clarke will need the article for it must be written carefully and she has a new book in hand which obliges her to husband her time. (P.S.) on rereading Clarke's letter, Starr is inclined to believe Clarke wants materials for an article or biographical sketch rather than for her to write them. She wants to know what he desires. (P.S. on a note): She can send some intersting notes and statistics on Bishop (Anthony) O'Regan and Bishop (Thomas Patrick Roger) Foley.

to R(ichard) H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Conway delayed answering Clarke's of July 11 as Father P.M.O'Regan, the nephew of Bishop O'Regan, was away. O'Regan will refresh his mind on the facts on his uncle and will forward them to Clarke. (Father) John Foley pastor of St. Martin's Church, Baltimore, brother of Bishop (Thomas) Foley would be the best source of information on Bishop Foley. Conway gives O'Regan's address. O'Regan had a precise knowledge of Bishop O'Regan's handling of Church property during his short administration of the diocese. Foley was also conversant with his brother's work there.

Muir, Marion: Morrison, (Colorado)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Muir does not like English writers and makes comments on works by a number of them. She has seen that poet of the Sierras going the rounds. Morality is unnecessary in poetry but when a man with partners of assorted colors talks of a young girl's education it is time for some decent laborer to pick him up and drop him out the window. He wrote two Colorado stories and precious slush they were. She ceases to wonder that the Police Gazette out sells such high toned literature.

The Cardinal Vicar is strict about granting relics because of unbecoming frauds at Rome. His health is so poor that he must return to Ireland. He is threatened with paralysis. O'Cleary will keep posted on Vatican news but he can recommend a correspondent to fill his place.

Sister St. John thanks McMaster for letting her know about writing to (Al)pho(nsus) (McMaster), and also for the clipping from the paper, which Mother Ignatius read to the Community. The society may do a great deal of good in the West. Mother Mary Walburga is still in Avoca, (Minnesota) and will probably miss the retreat. She had a lengthy discussion with one of the Sisters who tried to prove to her that her father (McMaster) was a saint, but that is something only God can decide. Gertrude (McMaster's) letters arrived on Tuesday. She will remember them all in her prayers.

When John gets to Rio he will be able to get to confession and to Mass. Mother M. Gertrude (S.H.C.J.), living at the Spring Harden Street Convent, told St. John of a young man who once called there and spoke very highly of John. She would like to know who this young man was.

Dorsey, Anna Hanson: (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The heat at the present time is 104 degrees in the shade. Angie (Dorsey) is ill again, but Nellie's (Ella Lorraine Dorsey) ankle has healed. She went on a trip to Montreal, Quebec and Niagara and will probably write an article about the trip. The President of Toronto College spoke highly of Mrs. Dorsey, Nellie says. Mrs. Dorsey calls Hudson's attention to an article in the "Atlantic Monthly" by Brooke Herford entitled "The Trust worthiness of Early Tradition" uses the old argument of the Church to make his point and he thinks that he has discovered something new. Bishop (John Joseph) Keane is going blind and unless cured at Lourdes there is no hope for recovery. Bishop (John A.) Watterson visited Mrs. Dorsey. She does not feel jealous but it would have consoled her to be recognized by an American Bishop for her literary endeavors when it might have easily been done. She will have a story read for Hudson by October. Father Harmon (C.) Denny, S.J., came to see her recently; he had read her "Tom Boy" which was published in the Young Crusader and he split his sides laughing.

Her father told her he was sending letters, and she could write, so she is making use of the opportunity. She hopes he is happy; his friends ask about him constantly. She had a nice time at Sharon a few weeks ago. She cannot write a long letter but sends much love with this.

McMaster, Ja(me)s A(lphonsus): (New York, New York)
to (John Al)phons(us McMaster): (Rio de Janiero, Brazil)

Were McMaster in John's place in Rio he would send each of the enclosed letters to the enclosed letters to the Consul General and the Minister Plenipotentiary. They may bring him offers of courtesy, and give him some advantages. They may also bring offers to "show him the town" from the clerks of Consul or Minister. He should ignore these, and should get to Mass and the Sacraments. Often. (Here sheet No. 2 is missing). If John needs more money. McMaster will honor at sight any draft up to 500.00. He gives this to provide against anything unforseen. He asks John to write him. The shipping records, which he has watched daily, give no news of the Bark Templar. He encloses two letters which he hopes John will use.

In October he expects to be permanently located in New York City. He knows very little of Bishop (Amadeus) Rappe, but he was a complete file of the Catholic Telegraph which contains more on the two bishops than any other source.
