to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Muir thanks Hudson for the book he sent her. She is designing Christmas cards and would like to know if Hudson has any favorite flowers or emblems. She told Hudson her story because he would know her better for it. The Professor she mentioned seems to be afflicted with the notion like most Catholic men that a girl must want him very badly. Muir says that he failed in that point of honor and doesn't know it. If all Catholic men were like him no wonder the girls go into the convent.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

O'Meara submits a manuscript and asks Hudson to name it. She warns Hudson to beware of Monsignor (Thomas John) Capel. He has been a thorn in the side of the church at home for years, but for (Henry) Cardinal Manning's compassion and hope of his ultimate conversion, he would have been shown up. His cleverness and deceit enabled him to escape the condemnation that nearly over took him in Rome. He has no diocese and not a bishop and never again will have faculties as a priest in England. The sensation he is making in the United States is giving pain and scandal in Europe.

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Hudson sends two copies of the Month and one of the Ave Maria for Brownson to see. The review published in the New York Times may have been reprinted in the Catholic and was reprinted in the Universe of Cleveland, probably not in the Michigan Catholic. He cannot find a copy of the Universe to send. Hudson was mistaken about General (John A.) Logan: it was his brother who was minister to Chile and had a son at Notre Dame. However, Colonel (William) Hoynes knows the general and will give Brownson a letter to him, and can also give him a letter to Augustus H. Pettibone, member of Congress from the 1st district of Tennessee. Perhaps Finnerty also can be of service. Hudson asks information for the letter to General Logan about Brownson's army service. He sends his regards to Mrs. Brownson and hopes Brownson is well. P.S. Father Thomas Walsh and the Father General (Edward Sorin) wish to be remembered to Brownson and his household.

The Ave Maria and the Encyclical are excellent. Brownson does not know yet whether he shall introduce the bill into the Senate at the commencement of the session or wait for the decision of the House. Pettibone was on the Pension Committee last Congress. Brownson's matter came before the committee on Military Affairs. Mr. Finerty would be of service even if not on the military committee.

He is satisfied that Bishop (John) Ireland, at whose instance he has done both, would take copies for distribution here and in neighboring colonies. Hudson may address Jenkins in care of Father (P. Brown, Mary C.: Loogootee, Indiana

Brown encloses the letter of a friend and asks Hudson to present his name to Father (Alexis) Granger, asking the prayers of the Association of Our Lady in his behalf. Brown also encloses the letter of Capt. Hastings, a Protestant, to whom she sent the Ave Maria; it is quite amusing.

Starr, Eliza Allen:
St. Joseph's Cottage,( )
to (Maurice) (F.) Egan: New York, (New York)

Both Miss Starr and her nephew were delighted with the photograph of (James Alphonsus) McMaster. Such a head would make a wonderful subject for a crayon portrait or a marble bust because of its expressiveness and character. She wishes Egan to thank McMaster for the photograph which she will place among her collection of friends. Unless there is an unforseen delay, the book "Pilgrims and Shrines" should reach her by Christmas. She sends her compliments to Mrs. Egan and to Miss Egan.

Hickey, P(atrick) V.: New York, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The revelation from (Kathleen) O'Meara is horrible. She does not give any evidence on which one can possibly act. It would have been better not thus to have privately blasted the man's character without a chance of defense. She has the Cardinal Prefect (Henry Manning?)'s letter. If he is the wretch described he ought to be shut up in a monastery. Hickey was invited by the Jesuits to hear him preach the panegyric of their founder.
