1884 May
(Sanfelicide Acquavella) William, Cardinal, Archbishop of Naples: (Naples, Italy)
to Most Reverend Sir ( ):

When 1887 the centenary of Alphonse de Liguori, noble of Naples, founder of the Redemptorists, and Bishop and Doctor arrives, Naples shall be foremost in celebrating his feast with some special mark of charity. The Sodality of most noble youths has ever since 1871, the year of its founding, resolved to celebrate the approaching centenary in such a say that the memory of this great protector and his ardent concern for God and men may persist forever among future generation. The Sodality has resolved to erect a works hospice where the chosen may learn letters or the arts to the measure of their talents and a memorial chapel to St. Alphonsus. They presented these plans to Pope Leo (XIII), who will shortly be celebrating his fiftieth year as a priest. A reprint of his answer of February 1 confirming and blessing their resolutions is appended. The cardinal concurs in this papal approval of the plans. He asks for prayers for their success. Alongside the Cardinal's name there is stamped the coal of the Joannine Association. (Associazione Giovanile) of St. Alphonse, Naples.

 The pope's letter follows:

Leo XIII, Pope: (Rome, Italy)
 to Antonio and Ducibus Guisso:
President of the noble youths of the Sodality of St. Alphonse de LiguoriNaples, (Italy)

From their letters of March 18 he has learned of their pious plans. He is happy to approve and bless them. (In the James Alphonsus McMaster papers.)

Starr, Eliza A(llen): (Chicago, Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Starr sends Julia Smalley's manuscripts. Starr will look over the proofs if Hudson thinks it necessary. She laughed when she read the note on S. Odelia and the Albany Telegraph. The (New York) Freeman's Journal gave full credit to the Ave Maria and to Starr for her art notes. Starr hopes that Hudson received his share of the copies of "Pilgrims and Shrines". She has sent one to Father-General (Edward Sorin) but has not heard from him. Starr thought Sorin would be delighted with the pictures of Santa Brigida. Father (John) Zahm wrote Starr that there was no longer any conveniences for photographing at the college. She has heard nothing from St. Mary's or Sisters Angelia or Lucretia.

Drummond, S.J., Father Lewis: St. Asaph, W(ales)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The man agree that the place where (John) Weld saw the picture was Leagram Hall. Drummond wrote to Father I(sidore John) de Gryse of Chipping and his answer came this morning. Drummond encloses the letter. Father ( ) Jones, the rector, says that Hudson may place full confidence in Lee's account. The article on Father (James) Pye Neale was delicious. The theologians there will for some time be discussing the "Glimpses". The last story from (Henri) Lasserre had a special interest for Drummond because Symphorien de Musy was a pupil of his.

Seymour wishes that Hudson had sent her recent manuscripts back to her rather than have printed them in the Ave Maria. On reading them she was displeased. Her article on Maryland settlements entitled "Pictures of a Century" is being looked over by the Catholic Standard, but if they cannot examine them before she goes to Europe, Seymour will send them to Hudson.

Howe, Frances R.: (Chesterton, Indiana)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Gratitude is expressed for the copy of "Most Holy Rosary". Howe and her mother are thankful to Hudson for what he has done to enable the good that Rose (Howe) her sister, has done to live after her. Father (H. F. Joseph) Kroll celebrated Mass in their chapel Saturday. Mrs. (Anna Hanson) Dorsey portrays Howe's idea of a mixed marriage as a Via Crucis in spite of a lawful mixed marriage and external happiness. She never hears from Father Aegidius Hennemann.

Nealis, J(ean) E. U.: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Nealis has left her husband who refuses to support her and her children. Under the advice of the Bishop, she has come to Boston to make a living. In order to save her boys, aged 13, 10 and 5, she will send them to New York to a night school. Nealis has an income of $200 per year with which she can educate her boys. This income comes from the money her mother left. Nealis has left the money to Father (C.) Lefebvre, C.S.C., who has agreed to take the boys and educate them at St. Joseph's College. After this, Nealis went to board with her husband who is well off. He refused to give Nealis either money or clothes. On the advice of her confessor she came to Boston. (John) Boyle O'Reilly and Katherine Conway are trying to help. Nealis is at St. Joseph's home with Mother Mary until she can get something to do. It has been suggested that she do some writing to get money. Mrs. Sadlier has promised to publish any book that she will write. Enclosed is an article which Nealis wishes Hudson to comment on. Nealis sends articles hoping that Hudson finds them satisfactory.

Toner asks Hudson to publish the enclosed letter from (Cardinal Guglielmo Sanfelice di Acquaella), Archbishop of Naples, together with the accompanying article in the "Liberta Cattolica". If space prevents the publishing of the whole article by Canon Milone, Hudson can make an article of his own out of it. Father General paid his subscription. It is probable that Mother Lucretia, (C.S.C.), did write acknowledge receipt of "Patron Saints". When Starr sees the short notices that sometimes come out on books she wonders how authors have courage to publish at all. Starr sent a copy of "Patron Saints" to the Novitiate as well as to St. Mary's. Mother Augusta, (C.S.C.), had no need to borrow commended the book warmly. No one knew, save Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan) that Edes did it. She has been so unwell as to be good for little save the weekly letter to the "Brooklyn Citizen". She sent to the "Dublin Review" a paper which was not accepted. (Herbert) Cardinal Vaughan said that the present editor, Father (James) Moynes, was in no wise given to saints and their devotion.

She did not forget him on his birthday, but knew he could not receive her letter, so she waited until he was at home. His father and Jennie must be happy to have him with them. She has been praying for him, and, reminding him that he has doubtless been under God's protection, urges him to pray also. She hopes he came home in good health, and asks him not to be run away again before again before visiting Carmel. May 13—A letter from Sister St. John (McMaster, S.H.C.J.) has just informed her that she heard from John's family when his arrival was expected hourly. (Edes, Ella B.): Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The death of their rector, Father (Louis E.) Hestolt stunned Edes. Edes always turned to him for advice. They did not like the article on him in the Ave Maria by (Daniel) Paul. She hopes he received the Gerarchia for 1884 she sent. Because of Monsignor ( ) Ciccolini(?) it came before the March Consistory when all the changes are made. There has been a general whisking around of cardinals, bishops and prelates. His Holiness (Leo XIII) seems possessed of the desire of change. It is rumored that the present Secretary of Propaganda is to be changed. The Pope is not infallible in these cases so one may lament some of them especially when they cause real damage. Edes knows that these changes are made without consulting the Cardinals. He made a mess of it in sending Father (Paolo) Fortini as Pro Vicar Apostolic to Queensland. They now have ordered his return by telegram. Queensland is under Propaganda but the first news they had of the nomination was an order from the Vatican. It was said to be the order of Cardinal (Giuseppe) Pecci. Edes intended to say daily a special Hail Mary that he (Fortini) might make a fool of himself and be recalled. Edes supposes Hudson received the post card relative to the books by Princess Wittgenstein and Professor Samurruim(?). Many of Wittgenstein's works are on the Index. She tried to further the election of the Pope by popular vote and was of the German anti-infallibility family. Hudson will receive a copy of Our Lady of Good Counsel by Dr. ( ) Dillon of Australia who is now in Rome. Edes asks Hudson to give the book a notice as soon as possible as Mrs. Eckel Harper has concocted a History of Our Lady of Good Counsel. She claims that Dr. Dillon has copied from her. Edes asks if she sent Hudson a copy of the Petit Manuel de la Sainte Face. It seems hopeless relative to the letter of Luther to his mother. Father (Carlo) Passaglia is not married. The only woman who was ever mixed up with him died the other day.

MacDonnell, Sister M. Magdalene: Lisbon, (Portugal)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister acknowledges receipt of the Ave Marias and notifies Hudson that she has finished writing the "Wasp". "Glimpses of the Supernatural" is attractive. She asked Bishop (John Joseph) Keane if he had seen cases of possession such as the one Hudson mentions in his book. Keane and Father Spence have gone to Ireland. Sister relates details about a witchcraft case that occurred in one of her order's convents in the last century. There is an incorrect passage in the book "The Festival of Holy Rosary at the Tomb of St. Dominic" which Hudson sent her. The Dominicans do not put St. Francis in their confiteor. Sister sends the Tantum Ergo or Haydn's Austrian National Hymn. She can acquaint Patriarch (Joseph Neto) with Hudson's wishes. He and Bishop Cajetan Aloise-Masella will be appointed Cardinals at the next Consistory. Father Guidi's book will soon be out in pamphlet form. Sister has a sketch on Thomas a Kempis about half ready. She was annoyed to hear that (Anna Hanson) Dorsey is so old; what a vigourous old lady to be able to write so well. Sister gave Miss Dalton Hudson's message.

As soon as he has time to write out the speech it will appear in pamphlet form. Papers throughout the country published extracts from his speech and Merrick has received some letters in regard to the position he has taken; most of them were commendatory. Merrick supposes he will be attacked and so much the better for he is prepared. He hopes Clarke's pen will be in his defense since he used Clarke's articles.

Neale, Father (James) P.: S(ain)t Inigoes, Maryland
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Neale says he is not collecting money to build a floating church. He already has three churches which are in need of repairs and the people have not the money to buy the needed articles. If the contributions for the floating church are not reclaimed Neale will take it as an indication that the contributors wish it to be used for repairing the three churches. After reading the article in the Ave Maria about his plans to build a floating church; Neale got scared and wrote to his superior to explain that it was not his idea. Father Carroll and he often speak of Hudson.

Neale, S.J., Father J(ames) P.: (Saint Inigoes, Maryland)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Neale has been talking about a floating church for seven years. It would be the best way to get to all the faithful living along the bays and inlets of the Chesapeake Bay. Archbishop (James Gibbons) likes the idea. Neale feels he is not the man to carry out the job. A man spoke of giving him $5000 two years ago, but Neale told him there was no prospect of building the church. He had plans drawn up by head of the Charleston Navy Yard.

Miss (Eliza Allen) Starr did not give the details that Cynthia (Smalley) related to Van Ness concerning her conversion. Mrs. (Anna Hanson) Dorsey could gather material from Sister Genevieve and Sister Teresa White at Georgetown Convent of the Visitation concerning Wilhelmina Jones. The daughters of Mr. Edward White of Binghamton gave Dorsey material for some stories.

John Chrysostom, C.S.C., Bro(ther): San Francisco, (California)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

What is meant by the branch business Chrysostom does not know, unless it is that he sent money for the Dome and completion of the church. He feels that he is faithful to the community and that he has given sufficient evidence of it. If Hudson thinks it best not to interest himself in these affairs, Chrysostom will confine himself to duties as an agent of the Ave Maria.

Neale has received $127.75 from Hudson and hopes that Hudson has received his letter expressing how Neale feels regarding the floating chapel. Neale prefers to repair his own churches if the contributors will permit him to do so. The floating chapel will cost at least $5,000. While Bishop (Henry Northrop) was confirming on May 26th, Neale missed his note book which contained a check for $20 sent to him by Hudson, payable to Father Pye.  to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard thanks Hudson for the picture of St. Aloysius and the letters of Father Lacordaire. He would like Lacordaire's letters in French. Stoddard has no notes of Father Junipero (Serra). Hudson had best ask Father (Joachim) Adam to prepare a paper. Father (Angelo) Casanova discovered the body of Serra after it had long been a mystery where it lay. This was written up about two years ago in the San Francisco Chronicle. Stoddard encloses a clipping. Stoddard's health is good but his spirits are ebbing. He would like to return to the United States. He has received the manuscript from Dan(iel) Paul and thot it would not interest the general reader. Stoddard received a letter from Father Fidelis.

Egan, Maurice F.: New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Egan wrote a story for the Ave Maria but feeling certain that Hudson would not like it he gave it to the Catholic World. Egan positively will do an article on John Gilmary Shea. He asks payment for all the articles he writes for the Ave Maria because he needs the money to publish a book of poems which he hopes will make some profits for Notre Dame. That C.O.D. business was absurd.
