(Ella Lorraine) Dorsey wrote Edwards regarding a bust of Father-General (Edward Sorin) that (Eliza Allen) Starr wishes executed. He received the (New York) Freeman's Journal, Hudson send him from Watertown. Edwards has not heard from Fathers (Thomas) Walsh and (John) Zahm since they departed but he expects them in two weeks. Edwards is afraid friends at Notre Dame will forget the Catholic Universe when sending out ads. He wrote to Smith; he answered but Edwards thinks Smith does not realize he has done a foolish thing is suing the College. Father Clark is in Denver. Edwards hopes Notre Dame will take care of the temperance delegates; tell Martin Regan to pay special attention to them. Edwards has been promised a bust of Bishop (John) Timon, C.M.

She discusses the conversion of two Swedish young men to Catholicism. Father (Peter) Cooney accompanied by Father (H. F.) Kroll and Doctor Kilroy visited Howe. Howe's mother is going to have the cross that her father raised in the graveyard, as the emblem of Christianity in Northwestern Indiana, replaced.

It is a wonderful sacrifice that he is making and he will be rewarded in the end. She plans to tell S(iste)r Teresa this morning.

Yet, he feels he could also go to a larger city and do better, and he thinks that he could improve himself immensely if he continued to study.

Brother is certain Mrs. Cromwell of Baltimore took out a life subscription. He met Father (John) Slattery, the Superior of the Josephite Missionaries, who attended Fordham with Hudson. He asked about a life subscription which he wished to get for the Franciscan Sisters in Baltimore. Maurice (Francis) Egan was ill recently. (Patrick) Hickey is not well. Stanislaus left New York after a severe attack of cholera, from which he recovered at his brother's in Washington. The doctors insist that Stanislaus take a three months rest. He has given up hope of transferring any of the publications to (Thomas) Noonan & Company, but Mrs. (Anna Hanson) Dorsey intends to have them bring out the works. Piet sold "Excelsior" to (Patrick J.) Kenedy of New York, hence no hope of transferring the Metropolitans advantageously. The (William) Sadlier's promise a new program if books are left with them. He wrote to Father General (Edward Sorin) for instructions. Brother Edward informs Stanislaus that Sadlier's have made a settlement of six months royalty on books. They possess superior advantages for extension of business if they would use them.

(Mother) Louise has received Gertrude's letter, and is sure that Gertrude will become a true Teresian and a consolation to the Community. Her sacrifice is more than equalled by that of her father and her brother, who are giving her up to God cheerfully. Her arrangements are all right; She can receive Holy Communion with her father and attend Mass in the Chapel on the feast of St. Teresa, and be received inside afterwards. (Here follow instructions about clothing.) Her father is asked to send some prayer books when he sends the atlas. He should include the bill with them. Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) sends her love. Van Ness is greatly concerned over Hudson's eye trouble and recommends a cure.

Byrne was hoping to win a house belonging to the Sisters of St. Joseph but some one in New York won it. Byrne hopes to give Neale more money if it is necessary. He would like to know how much is needed in the course of a year.

(Maurice Francis) Egan sent Gill the letter referring to the engraving for the articles for Manhatten magazine. He wants Hudson to send some pictures to the office of that magazine. Gill will not write the article until he gets the photographs and materials.

Battalion drill is at 6:30 A.M. but recall has been sounded. He is much obliged for the copies of the London Tablet and Ave Maria. He constantly hears from Will(iam Seton) who is at present with the Jevonses at Cragdon; he writes cheerfully about the growth of Mount Vernon. His boys are having a good time during the vacations at Emmitsburg. He hopes they will do the family name a little more honor next year. Annie (Foster Seton) is going to Nashua in October and will stop in New York. Robert is to send the chalice direct to Harry.

Death has stricken the Lawrence family the third time in eleven months, taking her sister, Mrs. Annie Kennelly. Seven children have been left orphans. Hudson is requested to say Masses for the repose of the souls of Lawrence's relatives.

Papin thanks Hudson for the scapulars and pictures that Hudson sent him. In one week they return to St. Louis; once he gets to St. Louis Papin hopes to see the Exposition which opened recently. Father (J.) Buckley is well and sends his regards to Hudson.
