Brownson, Josephine V(an) D(yke):
(Detroit, Michigan)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Brownson writes to Hudson to explain a difficult situation. During the summer Father (Ernest Van Dyke) secured an invitation for Philip (Brownson) to study at Notre Dame. He stated he would take Philip to South Bend at the start of the school year. A week before school began, Van Dyke announced he was taking a water trip and asked Major (Henry) Brownson to join him; when reminded that Philip had to be taken to Notre Dame, Van Dyke made no attempt to carry out his previous offer. Major Brownson had never seen Father (Thomas) Walsh's letter inviting Philip, so he felt he could not take him under such circumstances. Brownson from the start was against her son's going to Notre Dame. When Philip did not go to South Bend, Van Dyke was sore, since he felt Philip could have gone to Notre Dame alone. Major Brownson has been forced to assume new pecuniary obligations and thus was not in position to send his son to Notre Dame. The Brownson are greatly indebted to the Fathers of Notre Dame.

Dorsey sends a list of her contributions for the Ave Maria. She does this in the hope of getting a check. Doubtless, Hudson received Nellie's (Ella Lorraine Dorsey) letter written from Boston, after her trip to Halifax. Nellie did not see the Noonan Brothers, which made Dorsey glad to be rid of them, because they are Irish and she has lost faith in Irish Catholic publishers, who out Yankee, the Yankees. Nellie's interview with Mr. Osgood was satisfactory. He has no prejudice as to Catholic books that are not controversial. He sees no difficulty to Dorsey's books being a success and he thinks Dorsey's having received the Holy Father's benediction will be a strong factor in the business. Dorsey is not so certain, since so many others have received it, but Dorsey's was different since it was a special one sent by Archbishop (James) Gibbons. Hudson will be glad to hear how many kind words Dorsey received about the "Old House" and how many enthusiastic friends Nellie found of Dorsey's in Halifax, among them Monsignor (M.) Power, and Sir Edward Kenny and his family.

Dorsey thanks Hudson for the two drafts. The writing on the outside of the books assures Dorsey that Hudson is in good health. A copy of the "Mad Penitent" is requested when it comes out. Dorsey plans to use these stories for a series. They are having an anxious time as to what the administration will do after July 1st; most people believe the Civil Service Law will prove a rope of sand to them. Although they wish it set aside, they respect it in so far as it applies to the classes of clerical workers who receive from 900 - 1800 dollars per annum. Above and below these grades are not included, thus there will be numerous dismissals. Dorsey has numerous friends in power, among them Mr. (Thomas) Bayard, who have urged Nellie's (Ella Lorraine Dorsey) promotion, but so far with no effect.

Dorsey's mother, (Anna Hanson Dorsey) was amazed and shocked at her daughter asking Hudson about receiving orders. Mrs. Dorsey suggests that Hudson write to Mr. Osgood, the publisher, telling him popular her stories are and that there has been a demand for a second edition. Mrs. Dorsey, after seeing the photograph of herself, wants another one made before allowing herself to be introduced to the public. Dorsey is playing up to the Murphy family so that she can get a friendly barter with them. She hopes to get to Sadlier, the publisher. Dorsey thanks Hudson for the favor he did for her. She dares not show the sketches to her mother until after the Ave Maria comes out. Dorsey's mother being old, she has little joy because her age and ill health are a burden. Hudson's health is a grave concern to the Dorsey household. He would be smart to come to Washington and visit them, it would do wonders for his health. They have a study and private room set aside for him.

Dorsey thanks Hudson for the five dollars. She thanks Hudson for noticing her works along with that of other well known writers of the Ave Maria. Egan has had some trouble in getting anybody to undertake the lithograph. The Photo-engraving people wanted more money for the new picture. Egan offered them the same price as before—$12.00. Egan advised Hudson not to use the picture at all, unless it can be used in the present size or unless Hudson feels that he can afford to have a pen and ink drawing made of it first. Egan sends the first part of the story. The Madonna of St. Luke was only saved from failure by very careful over-laying in the printing.

Of course Hudson paid for the sketch of (Anna Hanson) Dorsey. The Christmas story will be part of the compact. Mrs. (Katharine) Egan thanks Hudson particularly for the photos. She has had trouble with one of her eyes. Brother Stanislaus (Michael Kurowski) gave them some more Lourdes water. If Hudson has not sent the engraving, he should send it at once to Theodore De Vinni. (Rossiter?) Johnson has been asking about Hudson. Monsignor (Thomas John) Capel has "played out." It looked like bad faith for him to put his name on that English book. Baltimore is an unfit place to have a council. Egan would have used that pass if (James Alphonsus) McMaster had not been so constantly preoccupied about Gertrude (McMaster)'s going away and so often in Baltimore. Those in religion have the best of it—tied down to one place, but voluntarily.
