Mahan is causing all his trouble as he did hers. Mahan has given Ford away; he wrote to Senator (Arthur Pue) Gorman just after Ford called at the house with Judge ( ) Carroll during the last campaign. He wrote the letter under an assumed name; the Republican party is down on Mahan about the affair which is well known in Boston; Mahan has few friends left in Boston.

Lambing, Father A(ndrew) A.: Pittsburg(h), P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

On last Sunday they organized the Ohio Valley Catholic Historical and Antiquarian Society. Lambing was elected president. His Researches go off slowly. (John Gilmary) Shea and (Richard H.) Clarke made a mistake in putting the membership of the American Catholic Historical Society so high. There is not sufficient literary ability at the head of the society in Philadelphia. Their circular is no credit. Lambing has a nephew, fifteen and a half, with him studying for the Church. His brother, (Father Michael Lambing) remains at Scottdale. Lambing is writing to the Cardinal Prefect of the Propaganda on the subject of "dirty advertisements" in Catholic papers. He wrote the Archbishop of Baltimore last May on the same subject.

Mahan, John W.: Washington, D.C.
to Patrick Ford: New York, (New York)

Mahan has been in New Orleans and the letter did not reach him until today. He will be in Washington for a time and Ford can get in touch with him there. It is possible that the housekeeper confused Patrick Ford with his nephew, (Austin E. Ford) who called on him during the campaign.

Riordan, P(atrick) W(illiam), Archbishop of San Francisco: Santa Clara, (California)
to (William J. Onahan): (Chicago, Illinois)

Bishop Riordan received Onahan's letter just as he was leaving for Santa Clara. He thanks Onahan for the congratulations. His diocese is heavily encumbered, but he hopes to wake the generosity which is not dormant and kindle a love for the Church. He has some willing co-laborers in the Society of Jesus. Santa Clara is a lovely spot. The Franciscans established a mission there a century ago and the church is in a good state of preservation. If he can make those who dwell in the midst of this beautiful valley love Him who is the Author of it all, Riordan will be content.

to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Mrs. Humphreys received McMaster's prompt reply. The intelligence of his wife's death was entirely new. She wonders how he could sever the family tree formed by God by giving up his three daughters. She would like to hear from him again and he is always welcome to their home.

McCormick, John D.: Trenton, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (Richard) H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

McCormick acknowledges Clarke's card of Feb. 16. His article in the Emporium is the only one he has published on that subject. He intends to write up the local church history bringing it to the present. It will be issued in book form. The article in Clark's possession was intended to create a taste for local history and draw out the criticism of the older inhabitants in Trenton. In this it was successful and a recovering of the ground will see much new material added and mistakes corrected. McCormick found several mistakes in early local history. This is a fair sample of how Catholic history was treated when left to his opponents. The local historian must be at his post if the general historian is to do justice to his subject. Hence it is a cheering sign to see Catholic Historical Societies springing into existence in the large cities to preserve the records of Catholic pioneers. The State Library is in Trenton with a large collection of Colonial records and books not easily found elsewhere. McCormick also has access to the Secretary of State's office with its wealth of old original documents. McCormick offers to consult any of these documents or books that members of Clarke's society might be interested in. McCormick will try to get his book published this year. In May, 1886. Vicar General Father (Anthony) Smith will be 25 years in Trenton. If no one else makes the event notable. McGovern will by placing his book in the hands of the people. They will better be able to appreciate the great development of Trenton. If Clarke will send him circular on the U(nited) S(tates) C(atholic) H(istorical) S(ociety). McCormick will think over becoming a member.

Mannix feels that Hudson did not care for her "Two Poets". She has not found the Catholic World to be up to standards regarding the type of literature that is admitted to its pages, for many of the stories according to Mannix are coarse and vulgar. Father (Augustine) Hewit does not see all the material before it is printed. Mannix promises to send the sketch for this month; she would like to try writing the story "Patron Saints".

Monsignor Julian Benoit promised in front of Oechtering to will Father John Oechatering a Crucifix on his death. After Benoit's death, Dwenger refused to allow Oechtering to take the crucifix, which angered Oechtering to the extent that he will not enter the bishop's house until he receives what is his. Since he has been at St. Mary's in Fort Wayne, Father John Oechtering has been envied by every one because he succeeded so well with his congregation.

Dorsey, Anna Hanson: (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

After reading Hudson's letter Dorsey wondered if something she had said about Christian Reid had betrayed jealousy of her success. This was not intended. Dorsey's role as a story writer is unassailable. Yet she has found that theological arguments introduced into her stories prevent success. The clergy do not approve of it. Reid's story now in progress is clever. Dorsey is sorry to see anything of bitterness and condemnation against "our separated brethren" as Bishop (John) England termed those outside the Church. (Eliza Allen) Starr's "Pilgrims and Shrines" made Dorsey feel as though she were in Rome. She was glad to see the favorable notices that appeared in the English Press of Starr's work. The book "Atlantis" by Ignatius Donnelly provided interesting reading. Dorsey makes a detailed comparison between the religious rites of the Greeks and the Zuni Indians. According to Frank Cushing the Zuni are not like the American aborigine, their faces, customs and habits show them to be a higher type, while their language has many similarities to the Greek. Dorsey will send an account of Pope Leo XIII's chalice. There is talk of a "Catholic University of America" being established in Washington. Dorsey feels that the site selected is not good because it is too near the nation's capital and the ignorant and bigot ed will charge that the Pope is preparing to take possession of the country. She feels that President (Grover) Cleveland, who is to be inaugurated shortly, will not allow himself to be manipulated by politicians, but will firmly uphold the Civil Service Law.

(McMaster, D.C.), (Sister) Gertrude: (Baltimore, Maryland)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

She has just received McMaster's letter, and on reading his announcement that it was to be a "Lenten Letter" she was prepared for some Lamentations—either of McMaster's own or from Scripture. In any case his letter would have been welcome. The paper has been signed and is ready to be returned to him. The Mother (Superior) said she would ask the sacristan about the palms, and would let McMaster know next week. She thanks him for the soap, and assures him of the prayers of all the Carmelites. She was glad to hear his expressions of sympathy for the Drexel girls, and McMaster's intention to send Pho (John Alphonsus McMaster) to New Orleans makes her happy. She hopes St. Joseph will take special care of him. She made a mistake about the relic of St. Anne for M(other) de Chantal, and sent her a picture of the Holy Face instead. McMaster should not forget that he will be welcome whenever he is able to come. All the Carmelites send him their love and prayers.
