1885 Mar. 2
Starr, Eliza Allen: (Chicago, Illinois)
to (Richard Henry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Starr's manuscript of the story of Bishop (John) McMullen is finished and has only to be read by two clergymen to detect any errors. She always fears delays from them. Starr's own delays in finishing the work on McMullen were due to delicate health overtaxed by work on her book. She has been ill the past year. She wonders how anyone has the courage to bring out a book and lecture courses. Now that the manuscript on McMullen is done she will begin the other two lives. These she will not connect but leave to Clarke to work in. She had a more personal idea of McMullen. Starr is complimented by being elected a member of the (U.S. Catholic) Historical Society. She will send the yearly dues of $10.00. Starr praises Clarke's article on the processes of canonization which appeared in the World. When the slips of Lives of the Martyrs come, she will send Clarke a copy. How can they expect their artists to paint saints enthusiastically until they have some of their own. She has sent some poems to Father (Daniel) Hudson. P.S. The copies will be bound within a few days.

1885 Mar. 3,
(McMaster, D.C.), (Sister) Gertrude: (Baltimore, Maryland)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

She has received his letter and thinks he has turned over a new leaf in letter writing. She trusts he will not let her slip from his daily life, for she will always be interested in his affairs. His extended trip, she hopes, will be pleasant, but when he returns he should stay with his father in New York. She does not think his old love of roving will return again, and when he gets back home he will realize what a dear father and friends he has. Although she will not see him until summer, she will pray for him. If he has time he should write her, but he should write his father first. Mother Louise asks that he tell his father thirty heads of palm would be enough. John never told (Gertrude) whether he succeeded in making a "dandy" of their father. She heard of some one who submitted to a "good brushing" for her sake. She is proud of him.

She thinks the Reverend Mother is writing to thank him for the notice of Lincoln. She asks McMaster to get the following books for her by Pere Surin, S.J., "Les Fondements de la Vie Spirituelle" and "L'Amour de Dieu".

1885 Mar. 5
McGovern, Father James J.: Lockport, Ill(inois)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke: N(ew) Y(ork), (New York)

(Eliza Allen)Starr has for sometime been gathering materials for a life of the late Bishop (John) McMullen of Davenport. McGovern was associated with McMullen from boyhood and Starr has drawn facts about McMullen freely from him. She submitted her manuscript for McGovern's supervision and he finds them good for a brief biographical marrative, if that is Clarke's aim in publishing the lives of the Bishops of Chicago. Miss Starr is applying to him for the lives of other deceased Bishops (James O.) Van de Velde, (Anthony) O'Reagan and (Thomas) Foley. McGovern has been identified with the archdiocese since 1839 and will gladly furnish the materials. But he wants to know if the lives will be sketches or detailed histories because he is getting materials for a publication to be issued under the title of "The First Five Bishops of Chicago". Archbishop (Patrick A.) Feehan urged McGovern to do this. He intends to have a detailed account of the present condition of the archdiocese added to the lives of the bishops. Starr is aware of his purpose which is not for personal gain but one of a desire to perpetuate the memories of the pioneer bishops and missionaries of the diocese. He is the only one who can reach the facts of early days. Starr has asked McGovern to write Clarke. She is well.

1885 Mar. 11
Riordan, Father D(aniel) J.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to Rich(ard) H(enry) Clark(e): New York, New York

A letter from (Eliza Allen) Starr informs Riordan that Clarke has given up all hope of getting information from him for a biographical sketch of Bishop (Thomas P.) Foley. Riordan presumed Starr was taking care of the matter, but he apologizes for not helping Clarke earlier. Riordan has little to add to the article he sent Clarke from the Chicago papers. He would like to see the good, picus religious side of Foley's character made known. He gives examples of Foley's piety. After the fire, the rebuilding of churches was left up to the pastors except St. Mary's and the Cathedral. The diocese was never financially embarrassed and Foley borrowed a large amount for the building of Holy Name Cathedral but it has been paid. He was a good business man and he brought the payment of debt under his immediate supervision. Parishes had to meet their obligations immediately and in a business manner. Shortly after Foley arrived in the diocese, the shaken confidence of the diocese was restored. Riordan has often wondered what Foley might have done if he realized his influence over people. Not that he neglected his duty, but Riordan wondered if he fully realized the exceptional influence he could have used on occasion. For 20 years Foley was the most popular priest in Baltimore and he succeeded in duplicating this position after a few years in Chicago. His most enduring monument was the astonishing frequency with which people used his name. His popularity was accounted for by a splendid physique, a perfectly gentlemanly manner, a naturally gifted mind allowing him to converse on a variety of subjects, a happy facility of speech, and a memory that never failed. He was a good conversationalist and a noted letter writer. If there is to be any allusion to the events which led to the retirement of Bishop (James) Duggan, Riordan trusts events will be placed in their proper light and that no blame will be charged against the innocent. In the Fast particularily there was and perhaps still is a strong feeling against the priests who quarrelled with Duggan. But no men were actuated by higher motives in their actions than were these priests in their efforts to have Duggan removed. Foley was not long in recognizing this. His first important appointment was that of appointing Father (John) McMullen, the head of the opposition, as vicar general and, on his death, as administrator. The Holy See coincided with the Bishop and appointed McMullen first Bishop of Davenport. Father (J.P.) Roles, whom many considered the ring leader, was made pastor of St. Mary's, the Mother Church of the city. Riordan trusts Clarke will not overdraw the picture of the disordered condition of the diocese at the time of Foley's appointment. The clergy and people were united. The whole trouble originated in Duggan and he was not responsible. His mind was affected by an ailment of long standing. Without this there would have been no trouble of any kind. The troubles were more imaginary than real and caused no particular annoyance to Foley. The people and priests treated him so well he would not have known of any trouble except by previous knowledge. The disappearance of the trouble was due in a measure to Foley. All felt he knew what to do and could do it. Riordan cannot give accurate information on Foley's life and work in Baltimore. Archbishop (James) Gibbons will be glad to furnish Clarke this information. P.S. Foley had a strong and deep love for his mother, brothers, and sisters. He wrote a family letter every Friday. Attachment to his family caused his request to be buried in Baltimore. Foley's burial request was made known in a letter addressed to Riordan (Riordan quotes this letter, or will). While jeolously guarding the money of the diocese, Foley had no love for it himself and gave freely to all who needed assistance. He was most considerate in dealing with his priests. He was a most impartial man and few found fault with his appointments.

McGovern, Father James J.: Lockport, (Illinois)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke: (New York), N(ew) Y(ork)

McGovern confesses the humiliating fact that the volumes Clarke referred to have never been brought under his notice. He will order without delay those volumes already published. McGovern will remit on receipt and asks to be kept on Clarke's list. (Eliza Allen) Starr's manuscripts are delayed because he and Clarke agreed on the point of facts but not funeral orations. McGovern is sorry to say Miss Starr's manuscript on the life of Bishop (John) McMullen was rendered unfit after leaving his hands. It is undergoing repairs and will soon be ready. McGovern is anxious to see what Clarke has to say about Bishop (James O.) Van de Velde. Archbishop (Patrick) Feehan has called attention from time to time to McGovern about the U(nited) S(tates) Catholic Historical Society, but he was always busy with matters concerning "the House of God". Now that McGovern has a complete resting place for the rest of his days, he will devote himself for the rest to his days, he will devote himself to perpetuating the known past and present for future generations.

(Gallagher), John (J.): New York, (New York)
to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Petersburgh, Va.

Gallagher was sorry to find, in John's letter to his father, that he is perplexed and disappointed. John will have received Gallagher's letter of (Mar.) 28, (1885), telling him to go ahead regardless of passes. His father wants John to telegraph his address so that he may write. Gallagher's is chancing this letter to Petersburgh. Jack Keiley is disappointed at not hearing from John. He told Gallagher, who had no idea John was such a gallant, of John's activities in Richmond. John should not forget to telegraph his father. (Maurice Francis) Egan, his son, John's father, and the attachés are well.

(McMaster), Sister Gertrude: Carmel, (Baltimore, Maryland)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

With a request from the Reverend Mother, (Sister) Gertrude writes to wish McMaster again a happy birthday. She is taking pride in her mastery of "chaining" and is sending him a pair of beads for Christmas. The Mother-Superior as well as several of the other nuns are going to Holy Communion for him tomorrow. Sister Gertrude encloses a note for Mr. (Maurice Francis) Egan. She was glad to hear that "Kitten" will make her vows with Sister St. John. Because he has so many things on his mind, she reminds him of the crucifixes. Mother Louise sends best wishes. P.S. She forgot to tell him that the beads were not blessed and that on his next visit, they will talk over enrolling in the Dominican Church and gaining full indulgence.

Cushing, Robert: Union Square (New York, N.Y.)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana

It would give him great pleasure to comply with Edwards' request but he cannot do so. To satisfy a few of the Cardinal's (John McCloskey) friends he had a piece mould of the bust made. He gave away one to his cousin Father D(aniel) J. Sheehy, of Brooklyn. In justice to the Cardinal's portrait he has concluded to furnish only a finished work; he could not furnish a bust for less than $50.

(Gallagher), John (J.): New York, (New York)
to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Knoxville, Tenn.

John's father is telegraphing to John in Bristol, Tenn., on the chance of finding him there. Major (John J.) Keiley telegraphed the president of the R(ail)r(oad) at Bristol, and if John can find him, he may get his passes at once. The plan of going from Chattanooga to Hickman and them by water to New Orleans if the passes fail to reach him is an excellent one, for it is the cheapest way. Gallagher thinks it advisable to work all the way down to New Orleans, for it would not do to travel on a sickly pocketbook. P.S. Cain says the office is (peaceful) since John left. (Notes at top of letter): Some papers were sent to Knoxville today. Anthony Keiley has been nominated by president (Grover Cleveland) as ambassador to Italy. (James Alphonsus McMaster) hopes he will not accept. Gallagher sent a letter to Petersburg(h), (Virginia) with instructions to the p(ost.) m(aster) to forward it. (Enclosure;) P.S. John's father requests that John send at once Father (M.) O'Keef's check, which was to be payable April 1, (1885). John's father will write tonight.

1885 Mar. 31,
(McMaster, James Alphonsus): (New York, New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Knoxville, Tennesee)

John has been good in writing McMaster so often, but McMaster has not answered him as he ought. John knows, however, how hard it is for McMaster to write letters. He has telegraphed John at Bristol (Tennessee), telling him there may be (passes) for him there. Major (John J.) Keiley has telegraphed the president of the (Rail) road to send them to Bristol, but if he does not get them John should push on. If he runs short of money John can telegraph McMaster, who will send or telegraph him some money instantly. He wants John to be prudent about spending, but does not want him to be in straits, and as long as he has money to send he will do so. In the next letter he writes, which will be as soon as he knows definitely where a letter will meet John, he will give him a letter to Mr. T. Fitzwilliam and Company in New Orleans, who will be kind to John and of much service. In New Orleans John should also see Father (J.) Giosen of St. Alphonsus Church, an old friend of McMaster's. The Cattarh is nearly over, and McMaster feels well. Sisters Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) and Gertrude (McMaster, D.C.) have written him loving letters for his birthday tomorrow. He wonders how John's cold is, and orders John to write him. On April 9, (1885) Sister St. John (McMaster, S.H.C.J.) is making her final vows in Philadelphia, and if John cannot attend that day, be should at least say the beads. McMaster is sure John will keep up his attention to religious matters, especially now, at Easter time. Above all, John should let neither company nor low spirits lead him to drinking anything stronger than light wine or beer, for he must remember that he inherits a dangerous tendency in this matter, from generation to generation.
