Soon after the confederate army of which he was a member was defeated he took up the coffee planting business in Guatemala. The "Freeman's Journal" gives him the only glimpes of the Catholic world.

1885 Nov. 1
Sykes, Macrae: Sing Sing, New York
to (James F. Edwards): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is glad that Edwards is able to be up today. Sykes' dear friend General (George B.) McClellan died on the 29th. McClellan got him his appointment to West Point. He tells how the general valued his father's friendship. There are only a few of his father's friends left. Secretary of State (Edwin M.) Stanton and John Pope were the only enmies his father had. It seems queer that Sykes' roommate should lose his uncle, Cardinal (John) McCloskey, and that Sykes should lose his friend. He had a letter from (John W.) Guthrie who is working in the office of a Mr. Hinricks, at Carroll, (Iowa). Sykes is dying to have some ice-skating.

(Maes), Bishop Camillus Paul: Covington, K(entuck)y
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): Notre Dame, (Indiana)

Maes sends an article he received from Europe which he thinks ought to be translated and published in the Ave Maria. He thinks Butler's treatise on Purgatory a fitting paper for one of Hudson's "Ave Maria Series". Maes requests that Hudson have the first five articles of the series bound and sent to him. He accepted two lectures in Detroit, because he is driven to get money. Hudson must have noticed the trick Father (Ralph) Dewey, S.J., played on Maes, writing for some notes to complete his own, then published them crudely.

Cassidy, M.A.: St. Michel, Lonesdale
to (James Alphonsus) McMaster: (New York, New York)

A short time ago Cassidy discovered some persons interested in the Indian Missions, among whom were Bishop (Martin) Marty and Father Stephan. Everyone agreed that the Freeman's Journal should be enlisted in the cause. She was asked to prepare some papers but as the Freeman's Journal should be enlisted in the cause. She was asked to prepare some papers but as the Freeman has scores of correspondents with more knowledge on Indian affairs than she, she will leave it up to them. One of McMaster's friends prompted her to write him on the subject. She is going to move into town about the middle of December. Father Stephen told her that there is no question of the "Indiana Bureau" now but they still need schools.

1885 (Nov.) 4
(Gallagher), John (J.): New York, (New York)
to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Buffalo, N.Y.

Gallagher was wrapping the lists with the intention of sending them when John's letter came. He sent them as soon as possible, and hopes John did not have to lose time waiting for them. Gallagher is sending printed envelopes to Erie, Pa., because second class matter travels slower than letters. John's father asks that John send him his address in advance; if he comes back tonight Gallagher will tell him to write John at Erie. Gallagher knows that it is not always easy for John to know where he will be four or five days in advance, but when he does know where he will be he should tell them. Bishop (Bernard J.) McQuaid, Rochester, (New York), has remitted $9.00 and John has been credited for his commission. P.S. Gallagher is sending two printed envelopes.

Seton, W(illiam): N(ew) Y(ork, New York)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton: Jersey City, New Jersey)

He will bring the "Mystery of Wilyard Clip" to Robert next week. Aunt Griffin's book shows her to have some fancy, but not a well balanced mind. Sally (Sarah Redwood Parrish Seton) thinks some of the pieces too silly to be read. Hattie Parrish is devouring Cardinal Newman's life and letters. William received a letter from ((E)liz- (abeth Seton) Yesterday. Nina (Prime) has been ill but is recovering. He also had a letter from Harry. Tomorrow Dr. Lee celebrates the 22nd anniversary of his marriages; Sally and William dine there. Last evening he went to Jersey City to meet Sally Lee who says Robert has left a most delighted impression in Baltimore.

1885 (Nov.) 6
(Gallagher), John (J.): New York, (New York)
to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Erie, Pa.

John's letter, his return lists, and his ($100.00) came in together. Gallagher sympathizes with John in his attempt to reach Rexville, (New York) from Andover, (New York), and warns John not to invite pneumonia. Gallagher is sorry John was delayed waiting for the lists of Buffalo, but explains that he had not expected John to reach Buffalo so soon. He would sent the lists weeks ahead, but he desires to have them as correct as possible before sending, and the subscribers often remit just before the agent calls. Also, the lists, if they were sent far ahead, might fall into the hands of a "sharper" who would collect the bills under false pretenses. The elections in New York were a great surprise. Old Tammany is once more on top, and both Gallagher and (James Alphonsus McMaster) are well pleased. The (Freeman's Journal) office was closed Election Day, and they had a chance to do some electioneering. Gallagher tried to get his friend ( ) McGoldrick elected, but is sorry to say he was beaten. McGoldrick had been deprived of the regular Tammany nomination through trickery and fraud. All the folks are well. John's father will think John has been working too hard when he sees the $100.00. Gallagher asks John once more to send his address in advance if at all possible (Maurice Francis) Egan has just returned from a visit to Washington. Cain is the some as usual, and J.K. is holding his own. Joe and Jack Keiley stop in occasionally and ask for John P.S. C. Farnicorn, Headville, Pa., has remitted $2.50 and should be credited.

Brownson) that he could send, also any Bishops' letters he might be able to send. The chapel is now roofed but the windows are not yet in, and Father (Alexis) Granger fears that Brownson would not want his father's remains brought here until everything is complete. D(orsey), A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey sends a part of her story "Palms". She is delighted that Christian Reid's (Frances Tiernan) new story will counterbalance the gravity of hers. Dorsey is in need and asks Hudson for an advance on her story. The article in the Ave Maria stating that letters of the Earl of Shrewsbury relating to the death of Mary Stuart had been found greatly interests Dorsey. She enjoyed (Charles Warren) Stoddard's sketch of his search for Joachim Miller in Rome. There is excitement about the new Catholic University; opinion is divided among the clerics as to its necessity.

Euphrasie, Sister: Vincennes, Indiana
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

The mitre she sent of Bishop (Maurice) de St. Palais was made by his sister-in-law. The pastor (H. Peythieu) of the old Cathedral at Vincennes always refused to give a souvenir of Bishop (Simon) Brute, but Sister Euphrasie knew of the Bishop's mitre case in an out of the way cupboard and one day she took it from the church. She asks that Edwards not let the pastor of Vincennes know of her trick.

1885 Nov. 11,
(Gallagher), John (J.): New York, (New York)
to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Franklin, Pa.

John's father has gone to Baltimore, and (Maurice Francis) Egan has moved. Gallagher's children and even his wife have the (w)hooping caugh, which he thinks not dangerous, but rather beneficial, since it develops the lungs. It is a nuisance, however, and as it lasts nearly three months, Gallagher faces the prospect of jumping out of bed a dozen times each night for the next seven weeks. The balance of the Ohio list will be sent as soon as John asks for it. Gallagher would say that it be sent to Youngstown, (Ohio), but will hold it until John tells him where to send it. He is sending papers to Franklin today. (P.S.) Father (Joseph M.) S(ch)wartz called at the office the very day John was at Northeast, (Pennsylvania). He was sorry he was not at Northeast when John called.

Griffin, Martin I. J.: Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

It is an incentive to work on in local Catholic historical labor to hear as Edwards tells that from the description he published an ideal portrait of Bishop (Michael) Egan (of Philadelphia) is to be made. He has been trying to find out the color of the bishop's hair. Griffin must keep his promise to send his photo, but it's like having a tooth pulled. St. Anthony has been Griffin's historical patron; he has never deserted him when he wanted to find out something new.

M(ahan), John W.: Washington, D.C.
to Austin (E. Ford: New York, New York)

He is feeling much better, but still has attacks of neuralgia. He has worked all day on the 69th Pennsylvania Vol(unteers) record and will finish it tomorrow. Captain Henpel asked him to thank Ford for the interest in the case of Patrick Ginley. Henpel was second in the examination for the weighership, but was delighted that O'Brien, one of the 69th came out first. Henpel mingles more with the Irish than with those of his own nationality. He speaks of the interpretation of a new civil service law, the actions of ( ) Eaton of Indiana. If Ford would print it he would write a letter on (William?) Saltonstall, fur trade, and the resurrection of the "Old Silver Guy" party. Saltonstall spoke for (John) Bell and (Edward) Everett in 1860, and denounced the Democratic party, and the ignorant and depraved class, the Irish, Mahan hissed the scandalous remarks. He discusses proofs and the book. He received a fine photograph of Lt. Col. Hanley.

(Mannix, Mary E.): Cin(cinnati,) O(hio)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix submits another manuscript. She read Lady (Georgiana) Fullerton's book long ago. If Hudson can not use the article he should save it for next year. Mannix thinks that neither Miss Forbes or Maurice (Francis) Egan write as well as they did in the past. (Mary) Meline can write a good essay but of late she has become too sentimental. By the time his anniversary comes around Mannix hopes to send Hudson a sketch on Father (Charles) Driscol, S.J. Father (William J.) Halley, last of the old regime in Cincinnati died November 8th. She wishes Hudson would publish the "Life of Soeur Rosalie" by Kathleen O'Meara in book form and inquires where she can get O'Meara's "Life of Bishop Grant".

McMaster saw Sister Gertrude (McMaster, D.C.) and Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) on (Nov. 11, 1885). Sister Gertrude is well, and Sister Teresa, who had suffered terribly, felt better. Montgomery, Father George: San Francisco, Calif(ornia)
to (James Alphonsus) McMaster: (New York, New York)

Montgomery thinks it proper to tell McMaster that his coast correspondent, John A. Burgess is a mono-maniac. Burgess regards himself as the only representative of the Church and has respect for neither priest nor bishop. Montgomery encloses a mild example of the letters sent to Archbishop Joseph Alemany. He writes so McMaster will be on his guard as Burgess seems quite sane at times.

Gallagher has received John's telegram from Warren, O. and has informed John by telegram that the lists and bills were sent to Youngstown. He sent them to Youngstown because John said he could be reached there. A check make payable to John for $12. arrived from D. O'Mara, of Florence, N.Y., this morning. John's father does not wish to have checks made payable to John, but John should get credit for the collection. Gallagher suggests a means of getting the commission and yet avoiding such checks. Gallagher's son Tommy, aged 7 years, who was dying of water on the brain is better. It would have been better if God had taken him, but it was hard to let him go. Gallagher is sorry John did not get the lists. Everybody is well. Enclosure: a sample page of an account book, with directions as to how John should keep it.

(Gallagher), John (J.): N(ew) Y(ork), (New York)
 to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): ( , Ohio)

Gallagher thanks John for his cheering letter, which is only another verification of the fact that John's heart is as big as his head. He resembles his father in his tenderness, sympathy, and generosity. Gallagher believes there is not another such employer as John's father in existence, who shares his employe's troubles, and is happy when they are. When Cain was sick, the kindness of John's father was not exceded even by Cain's father. Gallagher prays that he may be scared for many years, and that his reward may be eternal happiness. Gallagher remembers John's growing up, and how his resemblance to his father increased. It is still increasing, and Gallagher is happy to see this. His little boy is now out of danger, and they all feel happy. His son back want out and in the exhuberance of his joy blackened his cheek. Gallagher will show John's letter to his wife tonight, who cannot find words to express her thanks to John's fever for his kindness. Gallagher thanks John again for his sympathy and kindness.

Carrier had over 700 letters from bishops and archbishops, but many are now at the bottom of the gulf of Mexico, others are in the hands of a friend at Notre Dame, or were burned in the great fire of 1879. Edwards could get letters of Bishop (Joseph) Cretin of St. Paul from Bishop (John) Ireland. Father Louis De Cailly of Fort Madison, Iowa could give Edwards autographs of Bishop (Mathias) Loras of Dubuque. Carrier will endeavor to get a set of portraits of the Canadian bishops. Byrne, C.P., Father Stephen: Somerset, Ohio
to P(hilemon) E. Ewing: (Lancaster, Ohio)

Byrne sends enclosed an original letter of Father, afterwards Bishop, Fenwick, written from Georgetown, K(entuck)y. This was an out-mission of St. Rose's Convent attended for several years by the (Dominican) Fathers who had settled there in 1806. The priest referred to as having fallen sick was Father Robert Augier, (C.P.). one of the original four Fathers who came from England. The other three were Fathers Thomas Wilson, (C.P.). Raymond Tuite, (C.P.), and Fenwick. About 1817 or 1818 Augier returned by way of Ohio and Baltimore to England where he died some few years afterwards. All three were natives of England. Fenwick was descended of the oldest settlers of Maryland. Byrne has sent Ewing his translation of Father Monsabre's Meditations on the Holy Rosary. Byrne sends his regards to Mrs. Ewing, Mary, and his family.

Fenwick, Father Ed(ward Dominic): Georgetown, K(entucky)
 to Jacob Dittoe: Somerset, Ohio

Fenwick received Peter (Dittoe?)'s letter; he is sorry to hear of Jacob's low situation and hopes he will obtain mercy and life everlasting. Fenwick would have been glad to know the quantity and quality of Congress land for sale near the Salt Springs. He means to set out about September 10, going by way of Cincinnati, and they may expect him between the 20th and 30th. They are to inquire after the Catholics at Newark, (Ohio) and on Owl Creek, (Ohio). He has heard the names of Majors, Logue, Arnold, Backers, and McKinsy. The Dittoes are to contrive to let them know that Fenwick is to be in the neighborhood for a week or so; also those on Walnut Creek, (Ohio). The priest who tended the upper counties has become sick so all his charge falls on Fenwick. He sends best wishes to the old lady, to all, old and young, but especially to Joseph Dittoe and family.

Munro presented Hudson's inquiry to the proper person at Harper & Brothers and was told that it was impractical to furnish printed impressions of the three engravings to which Hudson referred. The cost of engraving the three cuts was over nine hundred dollars. Harper's compromised by offering Hudson the electros for use only in connection with the Ave Maria for three hundred dollars, on the condition that Hudson give Harper's credit. Munro is sorry to hear that Hudson is thinking of parting with (Maurice Francis) Egan's "Preludes". He wants John to be sure to be home for Christmas, and suggests skipping small places in Ohio, where a route might be laid out for (P.W.) O'Brien. But John may arrange it as he wishes. (Maurrice Francis) Egan wrote to John in Toledo. Enclosure: A note by Gallagher telling John that Gallagher's son is much better, and was able to eat turkey on (Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 1885).

She hastens to give all the information she can. Her father was Archbishop (John) Carroll's nephew. Her half-brother, John Carroll Brent, was named after the Archbishop. She has a tortoise shell crucifix which belonged to the Archbishop, but she could not part with it. Her sister, Mrs. Chilton, whose husband is U.S. Consul in Canada, has a coffee urn with the initials of the Archbishop on it. There are some letters and sermons of the Archbishop in the old homestead which they could send to Edwards. Miss Brent's mother was a relative of Archbishop (Leonard) Neale, but she has nothing that belonged to him. She can loan Edwards a copy of the "Life of Archbishop Carroll" written by John Carroll Brent. They also have a small portrait of the Archbishop. She recently lost her niece Julia; she was buried in the family lot adjoining Carroll Chapel in Montgomery County, Maryland. The mother of the Archbishop is also laid there.
