(1885 Dec.)
Baroux, Father L(ouis): (Big Rapids, Michigan)
to (Joseph A. Lyons: Notre Dame, Indiana)

(Lyons) might not see the propriety of Baroux's sending him the names of the places where the money was collected but Baroux means to prove the truthfulness of his statements. Among those who have devoted some years of their lives for that community, can many bring a record such as Baroux's? Money collected 22827 francs, over $4000, 100 chasubles besides 400 volumes Baroux left for Notre Dame when he went to Bengal. Has anyone who has done so much in 3 years, been treated so scornfully as (Lyons) has treated Baroux. (On the same paper and enclosed): Amount of money received for the orphans of N(otre) D(ame) in 1850, 51. (Names and amounts given by each donor).

Dorsey thanks Hudson for the $100 check and the book entitled "Mad Penitent of Todi". She got the "Story of Jacopone" from "The Life of Frederick Ozanam" by (Kathleen) O'Meara. What are Hudson's doubts about "Palms"? Dorsey prizes the poem addressed to her by a Portuguese friend and regrets that it was not printed in the Ave Maria because the person probably saw (Eliza Allen) Starr and (Eleanor) Donnelly complimented by poetic tributes in the Ave Maria. Nellie (Ella Lorraine Dorsey) received Hudson's letter; Dorsey will leave the matter of the edition in Hudson's and her hands. She requests one of Father (John A.) Zahm's books.

(Gallagher), John (J.): New York, (New York)
to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Cincinnati, (Ohio)

John's letter has been received, and although John does not acknowledge the letter Gallagher sent to Toledo, (Ohio), he is sure John will receive it before he leaves Toledo. Gallagher sent some papers to Dayton, O(hio). The folks are all well, and look forward to seeing John. There is no news of interest, except that (Maurice Francis) Egan's friend, Mr. Gill, editor of the Catholic World, who has been in New York all of the time, was elected a member of the Irish Parliament. It must be easier to run (for offices) there than in this country. P.S. John's remit(tance) of $75.00 arrived.

1885 Dec. 4
Baroux, Father (Louis): Big Rapids, (Michigan)
to (Joseph A. Lyons: Notre Dame, Indiana?)

In the Silver Jubilee (Lyons) published in 1869 and also in the Notre Dame Scholastic a few weeks ago, Baroux has been the victim of the most glaring ingratitude. On page 39 (Lyons) said that in 1849 the shops and kitchen were destroyed by fire and that Father (Edward F.) Sorin, (C.S.C.) took measures to have the frame building replaced by a brick one built behind the church. (Lyons) gets rid, without scruple or shame, of a debt of gratitude. If (Lyons) does not know the measures Sorin took, Baroux will tell him. At that time, Baroux had been sick for four months with lung fever contracted on a sick call to St. Joseph, Mich(igan) when Sorin wrote begging Baroux to go to France to solicit money. Sorin wrote again and sent that letter to Pokagan by two orphans. Sorin said he had no other priest to spare, that if Baroux could not go they would be obliged to send away all the orphans. Baroux undertook the mission. For 15 months he preached 3 or 4 times in different churches and had to go to bed several times a day. He was under the care of the doctor. This is the way Baroux collected over $3,700, 18694 francs besides 75 chasubles. This was the measure taken. (Lyons) would not have disgraced his book by telling the truth; his silence is a black spot in the history of N(otre) D(ame). Two years later, Baroux collected for the mission of Bengal 4133 francs and 25 chasubles. Does (Lyons) understand with what indignity he has treated Baroux? Baroux will send him the amount collected in different places; the amount was registered at the Motherhouse and Notre Dame.

1885 Dec. 4
Dallas, A(lexander) I.: San Antonio, Florida
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dallas thanks Hudson for the picture of St. Stanislaus. The story "Bob's Vocation" which has been in the Ave Maria interests Dallas because the Navy was his first profession. The article by (T. F.) Galwey about priests in the Army during the Civil War also was interesting. The misunderstanding between Dallas, Judge (Edmund) Dunne and the parish priest continues.

1885 (Dec.) 4,
(Gallagher), John (J.): New York, (New York)
to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Pittsburgh, (Pennsylvania)

They will all be glad when John is with them again, especially John's father, who reads with pleasure every scrap of writing John sends. John's father is well. (A subscriber) has remitted $3.00 and should not be "billed". P.S. Gallagher sent a letter to Pittsburgh, and there is a package of papers waiting in Cincinnati which John should have forwarded. P.S. Gallagher asks for a list of the places John skipped, so that they may, unless John wishes otherwise, be worked into (P.W.) O'Brien's Indiana route. It would be better if John sent the unfinished lists.

1885 Dec. 5,
(McMaster, James Alphonsus): New York, (New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

McMaster does not know if John received the letter he sent to Toledo, (Ohio), but hopes he will get this one. While John is in Pittsburgh, he should call at the Redemptorist Convent at St. Philomena's Church. Father Michael Muller (C.SS.R.), the Rector is there and John knows how much he cares for him. McMaster thinks Father (C.) Rossenbauer, (C.SS.R) is there too. John is asked to go to Communion on (Dec. 8.), at this church, were his mother loved to go. John might also call on old Doctor Lincoln Oldshue, who probably still lives on Grant Street opposite the Cathedral. He is John's acting local guardian, and invested $4,370.00 for him last year in a mortgage given by the Pittsburgh Orphan Asylum. John might ask him about the interest, and payment of the money, and he might even, if he has time, see that the mortgage is all right, but he should be very polite to the old man, who has shaking palsy and is very sensitive. (John J.) Gallagher is having a fearful time with sickness in his family. McMaster asks if John plans to see his sisters before he gets home. At (the Convent of the Holy Child), Sharon (Hill, Pennsylvania) they do not receive visitors during Advent, but would make an exception for John. Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) has been ill again. McMaster hopes for John's safe return.

to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

English thanks Hudson for the copy of "Mad Pentient of Todi". Mr. Gilmore reports business better this year than it has been for the past ten seasons. He is awaiting the next issue of the Century Magazine that will contain (Charles Warren) Stoddard's poems. Ad Hardenbergh wrote recently proposing a trip to New York in January. The climate in Louisville has helped to improve English's health. Many wonder how Professor (James F.) Edwards is content to make his home at Notre Dame.

O'Brien, Archbishop C(ornelius): Halifax, N(ova) S(cotia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The description of the chapel is exaggerated for it is dry and usable both in summer and winter. They are not bound to provide accommodations for soldiers, this is the responsibility of the Imperial Government. The military chaplain is one of O'Brien's priests but paid by the government. If the writer belongs in the United States, the comparison O'Brien would suggest his making is the fair way Catholic soldiers are treated by the British Army and the manner in which they are treated in the United States.

Cooney asks Hudson to send him a copy of the North American Review for he is anxious to read General (William Starke) Rosecrans' article, "Grant's Mistakes". His remarks on the civilizing of the Indians have evidence of reference to the effort of the Catholic Church in that direction. The first volume of General (Ulysses) Grant's "Memoirs" is not his work but that of General (Adam) Badeau.

The poem "My Espousals" in last weeks Ave Maria is made up of stanzas selected from the one in the Catholic World, but Howley says the remainder is too emotionally mystic.  to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Sister Gertrude could never tell McMaster all that is in her heart. She realizes more and more that nothing can be done without (Christ). She hopes this letter will find McMaster in better health, but reassures him that his suffering is all for the best. She wishes him a very happy Christmas, and promises to offer her Holy Communion on Christmas night for him.

Northrop, L.C.: Denver, Colorado
to James A(lphonsus) McMaster: New York, N(ew) Y(ork)

Northrop has two kinds of property which have large prospective gains. One is a gold mine that can be bought at $20,000 and only needs a little development. The other is a group of fifteen bromide mica mines. He encloses a sample. He has just returned from the San Louis (?) Valley and the county is filling up wonderfully. His office is complete with stenography and typewriter and so he can supply any reports needed. He would appreciate being recommended to anyone who would like to investigate and invest. P.S. He has some properties in the San Juan County but it would take $165,000 to buy them.

Ryder, E(liot) P.: S(ain)t Louis, M(iss)o(uri)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ryder is pleased that Hudson got a laugh from his verses, but it is more evidence that he is used up and he hasn't the energy to turn to prose writing. He was disappointed over not seeing Hudson on his latest visit to Notre Dame. Ryder had expected a Scholastic Annual in his Christmas stocking.

(McMaster), (D.C), (Sister) Gertrude: (Baltimore, Maryland)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York?)

She wishes him a happy Christmas, and is glad he is with his father again. She asks when he will come to see them. It has been a long time since she saw him, and remembers what a dear good boy he always was to her. She has not time to write a long letter, and he must imagine all the things she would like to say. She is glad he is such a comfort to his father, and prays that he may be a worthy son. She again wishes him a happy Christmas, reminding him that some day they will all be together again. She sends regards. P.S. She made the enclosed pincushion for him.

Cooney, C.S.C., Father P(eter) P.: Toledo, Ohio
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

In his present state of health and on account of the lack of material he must give up the idea of making the sketch of their Congregation (of Holy Cross), which he so much desired to have the honor to make. Someone on the ground where all the information can be obtained should undertake the work. Father General will appoint one of the priests to write it. It is a great trial for Cooney to write.

Howard, T(imothy) E.: South Bend, Indiana
to Ja(me)s F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Sunday Edwards asked Howard to send him any curiosities he might have. The enclosed (no enclosures) are all he thinks would be of interest to the library. Howard will not give them but only loan them. If Howard dies before calling for them they shall be the property of the University of Notre Dame. He prizes highly the letter from Halleck who was his idol among American poets then living. Later Howard got the letter and autograph from Longfellow and the autograph from Bryant. He got the Confederate $5 bill from a soldier on his way home from Vicksburg in 1863. Howard writes this a a history of the letters.

Barberey, (Helen) B(ailly) de: Paris, (France)
to Monsignor (Robert Seton: Jersey City, New Jersey)

Seton's precious remembrance came several days ago. Time does not change their friendship. What happiness it would be to see him again. At least he is to write; she knows so little about him; almost nothing about his sisters and brothers. Is his saintly aunt still living? It has been a year since she received anything from Mr. Fillicchi; he must be near 83. Their uncle, (Baron) de Corcelle will soon be 83; he is still interested in affairs of the Church and the country. They are all afflicted by the ever growing religious persecution. The number of children who come to their catechism classes is very small. Nothing foretells better times; everywhere there is a great uneasiness. Barberey saw among the portraits in the Catholic Annual, that of Lady Georgina Fullerton; one of Fullerton's friends is the Marquise de Salvo, an English-woman and convert, she is a close relative of Cardinal Manning. Barberey learned from her that Mrs. Craven is presently writing Fullerton's life. To gather material Mrs. Craven has been in London for several months, Mr. Fullerton having offered her a place in his home. Mrs. Craven is very old and last year underwent a terrible operation. She lives mostly in Paris where she is well beloved by her nephews and friends. The Marquise de Rende, mother of their Nuncio, has been connected with her since childhood. They see the Nuncio sometimes but he now lives in Varenne Street not far from the Bon Lafontaine. The Nuncio in Belgium, Monsignor Ferrata, enjoys the society of Mr. and Mrs. de Licdekerke. Barberey's niece is a very distinguished person; she has two sons and three daughters, the oldest 19. They are at the head of the Catholic party in Belgium. Barberey's brother's daughter will soon be the mother of her first child; her nephew, Viscount Toedere(?), married a year ago, does not yet have this expectation. Barberey's cousin, Marquise de Chambrun has been in France for a year; they cannot hope to keep her much longer; her husband will come looking for her; he makes a great sacrifice in being separated from her. Barberey's husband's health is not reassuring.

Mannix, Mary E.: Cin(cinnati), O(hio)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Her husband, (John B. Mannix), took the position of assignee for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati against the advice of his friends and only after being begged to do so by Archbishop (John B.) Purcell. He had hoped to increase the assets of the creditors by investing the remaining money in Southern Railroad stocks, then at a premium. The stocks depreciated, he became frightened and lost his head. A small group of the creditors incited by lawyers of poor reputation have held meetings, heaped abuse on the Church and claimed the assignee was a tool of the priests and bishops. One of the lawyers is E. Potter Dusten. At meetings of the creditors, letters from purported creditors have been read, which creditors have since shown to be non-existent.

Regarding the contradictory statement about Riel in the Annals of the Propagation of the Faith and in the last New York Freeman's-Journal, either Father Fourmont, O.M.I., or Father Andre, O.M.I., made it, does Hudson know who? "An Old Fashioned" appearing in the (New York) Freeman's-Journal is one of Anthony Trollope's stories with a few corrections and changes.

Father Urba(i)n (Guillet, O.S.C.O.) came in 1805, but he and all the Trappists in America excepting Vincent and a few brothers returned to France under Dom Augustine (de Lestrange, O.C.S.O.) in 1814. Vincent was held in Canada and became its pioneer Trappist and the founder of its first monastery that of Our Lady of Petit Clairvaux in Nova Scotia.
