1886 Sept. 1,
Egan, Maurice F(rancis): Omaha, Neb(raska)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Egan admires Jack (McMaster's) pluck the more now that he knows what traveling in the West means. Archbishop (Patrick A.) Feehan of (Chicago) is at Newport, and Father (Thomas F.) Cashman was out when Egan called. Egan went to Notre Dame to see Mr. Joseph Lyons who had promised him passes to and from Omaha, and whom he missed at Chicago. The hospitality at Notre Dame caused him some delay. He got the passes from J(ames) F. Edwards, and met a secular priest, Father (Louis) Neyron who lives at Notre Dame. He reported that McMaster's brother who was at New Albany died a Catholic, after many kindnesses to Father Neyron. Father Neyron is nearly ninety-three, but his memory is accurate. Egan saw much of the young American priests, expecially Father (Thomas) Walsh, at Notre Dame, and he was both edified and and humbled by the spirit of faith at the place, although he feels injudicious advertising has hurt the school very much. He thinks Father (Edward) Sorin somewhat of a "poseur". He came to Egan several times to ask him to give his best regards to McMaster, who is a great man (at Notre Dame). Senator Blum of Iowa told Egan that whenever McMaster writes a political article his Catholic constituents send him marked copies of it. Blum looks like a Jew, but he was taking his Children to the Sacred Heart Convent at Omaha. Egan says hay fever is very prevalent, and he has met a number of victims going to Northern Michigan. Egan's brother-in-law is ill, but not dying, it will take several days to arrange things, but he will hurry. They were expecting Archbishop (Patrick W) Riordan (of San Francisco) and M(onsi)g(no)r (Germano) Btraniero the oblegate, at Notre Dame, but Egan could not wait. Egan dined with (Father) (J.H.) (Oechtering), one of Bishop (Joseph) Dwenger's consultants, who, Egan thinks, will help the Freeman. Egan hopes McMaster is well, and says everyone over thirty years old asks about him. He asks McMaster to give his regards to (Jack) and Mr. Gallagher.

1886 Sept. 15,
Cummings, John T.: Wilbur, N(ew) Y(ork)
to James A(lphonsus) McMaster: (New York, New York)

The Knights of Labor will have their annual meeting Monday, Oct(ober) 4 at Richmond, V(irgini)a. Cummings is one of two delegates representing Ulster and Dutchess counties, in which the membership at present numbers 2500, and while he does not hope to have any influence on the 1000 delegates-each of whom represents 1000 members he nevertheless intends to offer at the Richmond convention a preamble and resolution which he would like to see adopted. He asks McMaster's advice on his resolution, which he reproduces at length. The preamble: Some unauthorized person claiming to be a member of the Knights of Labor has presented to Cardinal Elzear Alexander Taschereau a copy of the Union's constitution. Since this constitution was condemned by the Cardinal it would seem not to have been an authorized copy. The resolution is that the General Master Workman appoint and authorize members of the Union to lay before all Archbishops and Bishops, wherever the Union exixts, a copy of the constitution and the laws and explain them, and that otherwise these authorized members be sworn to secrecy if necessary. Cummings asks McMaster if it is wise to introduce such a resolution, and asks McMaster, that if he does think it wise, to restate it more concisely. Cummings says he has read Father Muller's book on secret societies which McMaster gave him in Feb(ruary) 1884-very carefully, and finds nothing to bar a Catholic from joining the Knights of Labor. He deplores McMaster's deprecation of the Society, and assures him that unwelcome elements shall be removed from the Union. He indicates this as being one of the purposes of the Richmond convention, and asks what McMaster thinks of the proposed reorganization of the order, which would pattern it after the state and Federal governments, with County, State, and National assemblies. Whatever McMaster says editorially is looked upon with peculiar interest by his readers. Cummings hopes McMaster will answer his questions before (September) 30, and gives him permission to print any part of his letter, if he pleases, except the preamble and resolution.

(18)86 Sept. 30
Meline, Mary M.: Cincinnati, Ohio
to Monsignor Robert Seton: Jersey City, (New Jersey)

She is writing the story of M(oun)t Saint Mary's, under the shadow of whose cupola she was born, and would like Seton's help. Her father was a professor there for a short time and her grand uncle Butler was president for several years. Archbishop (William Henry) Elder has placed several volumes at her disposal. What she wants is some minutiae to relieve the dryness of the sequence. Also the names of the first seven pupils who came from the Hayland farm. Was Seton's father (William Seton) one of them? Meline remembers seeing him during one of his visits to St. Joseph's. Archbishop Bayley mentions in his Life of Bishop Bruté "Wm. Miles' Mss. Notes"; they are what she wants if they can be had. Father (E.P.?) Allen writes that he does not know where they are. Also she wants the names of the first teachers and the date of the coming of some of the lay pupils. Her family traditions begin in 1825 when her uncle Farrell Reilly was a pupil and also her mother's cousin James Miller was a theological student. If Seton can assist her she will be greatly obliged. She has written to Bishop Chatard but has received no answer yet. Her father is Florent Meline not James Meline.

(1886) Sept. 31
Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): Washington, District of Columbia
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey sends notes on the early Italians. Dorsey knows as well as (Maurice Francis) Egan that Italy had no standard language in 253 to 260. Bishop (John Joseph) Keane thought the criticism contained in Hudson's letter hypercriticism. Dorsey is indifferent to the criticism of Egan because she does not consider him an authority. Her unfortunate story will soon end. Dorsey is making her last appearance on the stage of literature. She ran the first furrow in the field of American Catholic light literature. Mrs. (Anna T.) Sadlier followed, then others, but Dorsey should not like it to be forgotten that she led the way. Dr. (Charles Constantine) Pise, S.J., had written one short story called "Father Clement".
