to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Keiley encloses a clipping from the Boston Pilot of Saturday (Nov. 6, 1886). Keiley believes the editor of the Pilot must have a personal spite against the head of the State Department, since for months there have been cutting remarks made about him. Keiley thinks it atrocious than an Irish Catholic paper should carry such a remark (as the encloses). He also thinks the man who was saddened by the Marseillaise was right—it was a harlot's music which was enthroned at Notre Dame when the Lord of Glory was cast out. He appeals to McMaster to denounce the article. The enclosure: (clipping from Boston Pilot, Nov. 6, 1886) Secretary of State, Thomas H. Bayard says he is saddened by the Marsellaise, which smacks of revolution and bloodshed. After which the editor advises Bayard to retire to a nice quiet place and take his Marseillaise mixed with Thames water.

Her mother (Anna Hansen Dorsey) is working against tremendous odds at "Palms." E(lla) is halting on the edge of a journey to Mexico. 1886 Nov. 22,
Williamson, J.J.: New York, (New York)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Williamson, a reader of the Freeman's Journal for 25 yrs. has been censured and taken to task for expressing the opinion that he did not regard Thanksgiving Day as a holiday, and did not recognize the right of a governor or a president to proclaim it such. In the Catholic Church the daily celebration of Mass made every day a day of thanksgiving. He looks upon Thanksgiving Day as an institution of Puritan Prejudice and bigotry to detract and degrade the Catholic Christmas, for he knows the old Puritans were against anything Catholic. As evidence he quotes from Irving's "Sketch Book" as passage in which Irving quotes from the "Flying Eagle" of Dec. 24, 1652, the story of how the Puritan Parliament abolished Christmas day. He asks McMaster to say some words on the subject, and reminds him that his letter was not written for publication, and that, because he works for a New England firm, publication of his name might be considered an insult.

(DeVeuster), SS.CC., Father J(oseph) Damien: Kalawao, Molokai
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

DeVeuster thanks Hudson for the 25 copies of the brochure. He wishes (Charles Warren Stoddard) success in writing his article "Corpus Christi at Kalawao". Brother Joseph, Ira Dutton takes good care of the altars and churches, work which DeVeuster must leave to him because he is afflicted with leprosy. Dutton also acts as druggist. Because of the Japanese treatment, DeVeuster's disease seems checked and his strength has returned. He gives specifications for the type of tabernacles he needs. Should the subscription for funds Hudson has started among Ave Maria readers yield more money than is needed for the two tabernacles, DeVeuster asks that the money be used to buy candlesticks for the nave of the church.

Lambing, Father A(ndrew) A.: Wilkinsburg, P(ennsylvani)a
to R(ichard) H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

In answer to Clarke's of Nov. 19, he has had good opportunities to collect information about Bishop (Michael) Domenec when he wrote his history and he gives some information which he does not think suitable for publication. Domenec's father was of Moorish descent. The division of the diocese of Pittsburgh had been expected for some time but Altoona was thought to be the best for the second see but the Bishops of the Province thought better of Allegheny. Father (John) Tuigg, then of Altoona, thought that would be the new see. Father John Hickey, the vicar general, was able to borrow money and when the Bishop was at the Vatican Council finished the towers of the Cathedral and increased the debt. Previously he had built St. Paul Orphan Asylum for $200,000. Further complications arose over the building of a rectory. The Bishop, through Rome, had the diocese divided, leaving the greater part of the debt to Pittsburgh. The two bishops did not harmonize and when Domenec's actions were reported to Rome he resigned. Lambing says that Domenec was not a practical man and lacked firmness. This is all Lambing wishes to add to what he has in his book. He asks when Clarke's third volume will be out and if Clarke has any document for the "Researches". P.S. He called at Clarke's office last May but no one was there. (There is a clipping enclosed about the Diocese of Pittsburgh and about a meeting about the finances. It is quoted from the "Post". There is another quote from the "Pittsburgh Catholic" about Domenec's blessing the church at Sharpsburgh, P(ennsylvani)a.)

Hudson's note on the erection of the (Orestes A.) Brownson Memorial agrees with Jenkins' plan which he sent to the University of Cleveland. He has written to Hoffman Brothers of Milwaukee and Bishop (John Lancaster) Spalding about forwarding the more intellectual monument, the Brownson Chair. Hoffmann has placed at Spalding's disposal space in his Quarterly Clergy lists to make a direct appeal for the Philosophy Chair. If the board approves, they will need Hudson's support by publicity in the Ave Maria. Jenkins thanks Hudson for the favorable review of his recent book and relates how poorly it is selling. Dutton, Ira B.: Kalawao, Molokai
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Dutton describes his living quarters at the leper colony. He believes he has found his vocation and thanks Hudson as well as (Charles Warren) Stoddard for putting him on the way. Father (Joseph) Damien (DeVeuster) and Dutton thank Hudson for his efforts to get tabernacles for their mission churches. He asks that Hudson send his copy to Mother Judith, the superior of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart at Honolulu. DeVeuster has made Dutton sacristan for the two churches. Besides this work he attends the sick. A number of people including two priests have asked for permission to join DeVeuster in his work among the lepers. They would probably have to join the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, but since this society has no novitiate in Hawaii the Bishop arranged to give Dutton a three months' trial before assigning him to the leper colony. The Board of Health offered him a job with a salary and a house but this would have destroyed his aim. Dutton describes the alternations that are being made on the church. He is carrying on a campaign to exterminate the insects which are found in great numbers under the stones in the graveyard that is next to the church. What building supplies they need are brought in from San Francisco. Specifications for the type of tabernacle they need are given. He requests Hudson ask Stoddard to visit Father Francis X. Dutton in Cincinnati.
