Byron, William: St. Mary's, Waseca Co(unty), Minn(esota)
to J(ames), A(lphonsus) McMaster): (New York, New York)

Byron and Patrick Kenehan writes McMaster on behalf of the parishioners of St. Mary's in Waseca Co(unty), Minn(esota), who have been established in their parish by consent of Bishop (Thomas L.) Grace and Bishop (John) Ireland, for over 25 years. For over 15 years their parish, which now numbers between 450 and 500 souls, has had a resident priest, who has been provided with a suitable residence. About one year ago their church burned down, and the insurance company paid them the amount of their policy, $7,000, deducting only $126. This money, however, was confiscated by Bishop Ireland, who has not given it back but has intimated that he intends to build a church about three miles from the site of the original one, and compel the parishioners of St. Mary's as well as those of a neighboring parish, whose church is as old as the one that burned at St. Mary's, to attend it. This proposed church would be about seven miles from some parishioners, a distance which, in the rigorous climate, would make attendance at church almost impossible much of the year. The people at St. Mary's are greatly attached to their church. Remembering Bishop Ireland's promise that they would always have a church there, they paid about $11,000 for the building and grounds about six years ago, and now are much distracted at the thought of the Bishop's being able to confiscate their money and build a church for the neighboring parish, which contributed nothing to the building of the burned one. If Bishop Ireland carries through his plan, great harm will be done to religion, since the value of the church land will decrease greatly, and besides, many of the St. Mary's parishioners will lose their ardor, if not their faith. Byron appeals to McMaster to say whether the Bishop has the right to do as he plans, and reminds him that if he has the right some parishioners would submit, but many would not. He has written McMaster before and received no answer. He begs him to answer now.

She is glad he has been Deeling better, and looks forward to seeing him, although it is perhaps a good thing that he could not come the last week, since the Mother was ill. It has been a busy week, and she is ashamed that she has not written Mrs. Keiley. She often thinks of McMaster, knowing he is generous, hoping he is well. She looks forward to the "glorious day of the Resurrection." P.S. (Mother) is sending him a picture of the Blessed lady like the one used by Venerable Dominic, with which he worked so many miracles.

As soon as Murphy gets Hudson's statement, he will draw up the terms under which the six books will be printed. The copyrights would be vested in Mrs. (Anna Hanson Dorsey) and Notre Dame. She has received an answer from Rome the F(ather) General was absent, but his secretary acknowledged the receipt of the draft and assured them it would be sent to Mt. Carmel immediately. The acknowledgement (in French) praises McMaster's efforts in behalf of the order highly. She also had a letter from F(ather) Denis of St. Teresa (Belgium) who asks that Mc Master send him the Freeman's Journal no longer, since they are not allowed to receive so many papers. He will continue to pray for McMaster and his family. The Mother Superior of the Ursuline Convent. Columbia. S(outh) C(aronlina) thanks McMaster for his notice in their behalf, for because of it they received $50. from the S(ister)s of St. Mary of the Woods, Vigo Co(unty). She will pray for Alphonsus and for him, hoping that he will be able to come and see them soon. She begs to be remembered to Mrs. Keiley.

White, Rhoda E.: (Dublin, Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father (Bernard) O'Reilly is kept busy by Mr. Webster in America getting his book ready for publication. A rival publisher in Boston is attempting to palm off his book entitled "Life and Letters of Leo XIII" as the official edition and advertising that it has commendatory letters from Pope Leo XIII, (Edward) Cardinal Howard and Cardinal Manning. From Howard they learned that Garrison the publisher was using 1878 letters by these dignitaries to a photographer. When the book was shown to (Lucido) Cardinal Parocchi by Father (William H.B.) Deasy, Vice Rector of the American College, Parocchi denounced it as a shabby trick from the pen of an American priest at the American College, Roman comment on the book will appear in letters from Roman correspondents in the Baltimore Mirror and the Boston Pilot. O'Reilly's Life of Pope Leo XIII will be published in the spring.

1886 Dec. 7,
Campion, John: Kenosha, Wisconsin
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Campion encloses ($1.00) for a four month's subscription. (He adds a letter, signed "J.C.", evidently intended as a letter to the editor.) Campion requests that McMaster honor Christmas day by not publishing a paper on December 25, but on Christmas Eve instead. He thinks liberal Catholics may object, but they are non-entities, and are "worse than the Communists who flung fire about Paris". Everything possible must be done in order to destroy the many invasions of Paganism into our Christian civilization. McMaster should not say that bringing out the paper on December 25 is unavoidable, for he used the word before when he said the Catholic workmen went to the "unavoidable work" on All Saint's Day, and brought upon himself the protests of 68,000 workmen. Campion feels sure the leading Catholic newspaper realizes that for Catholics there must be no "unavoidable", and that Catholics must not be slaves to the current "maelstrom".

Brownson, H(enry) F.: Detroit, (Michigan)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Brownson congratulates Hudson on the growth of the Ave Maria's circulation. He can let Hudson have the article he suggested in time for the first number of 1887. Originally Brownson suggested taking his articles on the Blessed Virgin in the Review and the Ave Maria, arranging them in thirty-one chapters in the month of May. He has begun this revision but it is Hudson who can best tall if the Month of Mary would be an advisable addition to the number already before the public, His objection to those he has seen is the defect of an excess of the sentimental. The Third Plenary Council of Baltimore seems to be on his side in its thinking concerning books of prayers and devotions. The first objection to the book would be that several chapters would be devoted to worship in which Mary is not mentioned; the second is that two or three days would have to be added to what his father (Orestes A. Brownson) wrote in order to fill out the thirty-one days of the month. There is no prospect of his going to Notre Dame for several months.

Doyle, Father W(illia)m H.: Amoy, China
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Doyle states that when Father (Angelo) Zottoli's, (S.J.) work "Cursus Lit(teraturae) Chinorum" was published, Sir Robert Hart, Inspector-General of the Imperial Maritime Customs of China ordered seventy copies from the Fathers at Shanghai for use in that service. Hart, J. McLeary Brown, the late commissioner of Customs at Shanghai and Mr. Glover are well known for their erudition in Chinese literature and language. Zottoli always dresses, preaches, reads and speaks as a Chinese Christian and is seldom seen in the foreign town of Shanghai. Doyle is grieved by the writings that he has seen in the "News of Goa" about the Padroado question. He believes the newspapers should be surpressed or turned over to the management of a good Catholic journalist. Five copies of Father (John. A.) Zahm's "What the Church Has Done for Science" are requested.

(McMaster), D.C., (Sister) Gertrude: Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Father (Peter Paul) Fitzpatrick, S.J., died very suddenly, (Dec. 10, 1886) of paralysis of the heart, and not of the fever of which he had been ill for two or three weeks. S(iste)r Michael feels his death keenly, but is bearing up bravely. She gave (Sister) Gertrude some notes from which McMaster can make a notice of Father Fitzpatrick's death. S(iste)r Michael would appreciate a kind letter from McMaster, since Father Fitzpatrick was so fond of him and prayed constantly for his recovery when he heard of McMaster's illness. Father (Francis) Smith, S.J., called, and spoke very highly of Father Fitzpatrick. The Mother is not much better, and they are making a novena in which (Sister) Gertrude asks McMaster to join. Enclosure: Two newspaper clippings— accounts of the death of Father Peter Paul Fitzpatrick, S.J. at Loyola College, Dec. 10, 1886.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

The papers all over the country are full of the Father (Edwards) McGlynn incident. (Corrigan) should say nothing to Henry George and should send everything to Rome. He should give the facts about the Public school vs. the Catholic school, also McGlynn's action in regard to the Land League meetings. It is for the best interests of the people to replace McGlynn. If he is not removed from the city, any other discipline is of little use. (McQuaid) did not write to Rome on the "German question". He has received a letter from Bishop (Richard) Gilmour asking what is to be done. (McQuaid) answered that this underhand work should be put a stop to, if possible. Dispatches tell that Cardinal Franzelin is dead. An editorial in this morning's "Democrat" backs up (Corrigan) satisfactorily. McGlynn has a more numerous following among the younger priests than (Corrigan) has knowledge of. If (Corrigan) wins a definitive victory, afterwards he will have little trouble of this kind.

Mannix, Mary E.: Cin(cinnati), O(hio)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix is disappointed about the sketch of Superior Louise. She is sure it must have been Sister Alphonse who wrote to Hudson. Does Hudson know that the sisters want Mannix to write a life of Sister Louise? "Our Lady's Cradle song" was not written by Mannix. Mannix thinks the poem Hudson intends for the month of the Holy Infancy is one of the best she has ever written. What a good story-teller (T. F.) Galwey is getting to be. Both Mrs. and Miss Dorsey are excellent writers. (Eliza Allen) Starr has an interesting article in the last Catholic World on the Nativity in Art. Egan's Chats about Books are a little better. Archbishop (William H. Elder) does not approve of their beginning a "Messenger of the Holy Face". He thought the Jesuits or the priests at Notre Dame could do much better. Mannix is writing for the Christmas paper Margaret E. McCabe is getting out for the newsboys. The Catholic Tribune, the colored people's paper, is neither fish nor flesh. The editor, Dr. Watson is intelligent and good looking.

Starr, Eliza Allen: (Chicago, Illinois)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

When the Freeman's Journal came, instead of the costly advertisement she had suggested was an article by McMaster which was worth a hundred advertisements. For as a swift result of the generous article a young man, Edward James Cramsic, came for a copy of "Pilgrims and Shrines". His father was one of McMaster's old subscribers. The young man made his first Communion under the private instruction of F(ather) Henneberry, one of the curates of St. James under Archbishop Riordan. He gave up his fiance for his religion, and supports the Catholic schools although he never attended one. He is one of those formed under the influence of the Freeman's Journal. She has not received the photographs of McMaster's daughters. She does not like to hurry him, but urges him not to forget them. She wishes him a happy Christmas.

Smalley is chagrined that Father Wilber Robertson did not receive an immediate reply from Mr. (?) Sims. She called him by his baptismal name of Paul. It is rumored that (Eliza Allen) Starr is compiling a life of Professor George Allen late of Philadelphia. The book should be more interesting than the one recently published by Bishop (Louis) De Goesbriand of the Barber family. Fanny Allen and Father (William Henry) Hoyt.

She read of his illness in the papers, and remembers him as one of the staunchest friends of her father, Col(onel) Frank Peyton of Virginia, who lived in New York for several years before the war and always remembered McMaster's affectionate interest. She and her family have come back to New York and have struggled hard for a foothold. She has often wished to meet McMaster, and now that he is ill, she wishes to express her sincere sympathy. If McMaster is able to receive visitors she would like to visit him with her young son, whom she brought in the hope that he may be able to secure a livelihood, and who has been successful. Edwards has probably read of Sorin's resolution to delay no longer the erection of the monument in front of the College to the memory of Bishop (Simon) Brute and Fathers (Stephen) Badin, (Louis) de Seille and ((Didier) Petit. The monument is under the direction of L(uigi) Gregori. Bishop Brute graduated from the school of Medicine in Paris, first in the class of 1100 students. To Father Badin they owe the 524 acres on which they opened the first mission 1842. Sorin describes how de Seille gave Communion to himself before he died. Petit's career was short but remarkable. Sorin appoints Edwards to preside at the erection of the monument.

to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) did not expect the news he found in (Corrigan)'s card of Christmas eve. Father (Edward McGlynn) was leading many young priests astray by his ability to fascinate them. If he will not yield to Rome then he steps out of the Church. (McQuaid) sends a copy of yesterday's Rochester "Democrat." The papers speak of Father (Charles) McCready going to St. Stephen's. He is the best one for that post. McGlynn has made friends for himself. He is hand in glove with (Patrick) Ford of the "Irish World" and the extreme Irish revolutionists. He has appealed to American prejudice on the public school and tries to make the working classes believe he is their special friend, but has driven off the more intelligent of his American sympathizers. (Corrigan) should hold no discussions with him or his friends. Nothing less than McGlynn's removal from the city will answer. (McQuaid) had a letter from Msgr. (Denis J.) O'Connell, who said the German and American University questions would come before the Sacred Congregation in January. (McQuaid) is undecided whether to hold the Synod in January or wait until Easter week. He cannot bring the Father (James S.) O'Sullivan case to an examination, as he requires the books of the church as a preliminary step. Here the case comes to a standstill.
