Father Connelly's book is everything Hudson says. This ignoring of Catholic virtues is an affectation of the Jesuits. Father Connelly ought to know better. Jones, Mrs. Josephine: Dubuque, Iowa
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

In speaking of Bishop Mathias Loras to Edwards she said she thought Loras was a saint, a splendid man of refined manners and very zealous. Loras organized a temperance society in the cathedral and from that time did not take claret wine at dinner as is the custom of the French. She thinks this was the cause of his decline in health. Loras was very fond of his students. Loras came from France with Bishop Michael Portier and arrived in New Orleans Dec. 24, 1829.
