Dorsey, Anna H(anson): New York, (New York)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Since Hudson has assumed management of the Ave Maria's financial affairs she no longer experiences difficulty in cashing checks received from the Ave Maria. Mr. Riggs(the banker) knew that the checks were bona fide, but the rule governing business forms are inexorable. Fasy, a young and enterprising Catholic publisher in Philadelphia has brought out "Nora Brady's Vow" in a new edition. He published Eleanor Donnelly's "Life of Father Barberiere". Egan spoke well of both books in his sketch, "The Tenant of Gable End". Appleton's Cyclopedia has asked Dorsey to send them a biographical sketch of herself.

1887 Jan. 4,
MacCarthy, John: New York, (New York)
to (Maurice Francis) Egan: (New York, New York)

MacCarthy's letter was written to Egan and meant only for Egan, for MacCarthy knows that a kind word from a friend sometimes helps to lift a load, and Egan must be heavily burdened. His letter at the same time expressed his admiration for (James Alphonsus) McMaster. If Egan thinks that MacCarthy's words would give pleasure to those who loved and esteemed McMaster, he may do as he pleases with them. MacCarthy was highly pleased with Mr. Hickey's treatment (of McMaster's death) in the "Review". He urges Egan to keep up his health and courage, and to help (John Alphonsus McMaster) all he can.

1887 Jan. 6
Brownson, H(enry) F.: Detroit, Mich(igan)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson may change the title of the article to suit himself. Brownson's recollection seems clear with regard to the sketch of his father and the preparation of extracts from his writings and other matters he might send to the Ave Maria. Hudson's offer to him for writing for the Ave Maria is too generous.

to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) encloses the letter to the Cardinal. (no enclosure),the translation of which was sent this morning. (McQuaid) is afraid that the Germans are getting everything into their own power. A letter from (Ella B.) E(des) tells that (Bishop Joseph) Dwenger is to be the Apostolic Delegate. No one will regret this more than (Cardinal James Gibbons) of Baltimore, but it is altogether his fault. (Henry)George's paper is reviving the (Father Edward) McGlynn affair to the latter's damage. He will be a sick man by the time this is over.

1887 Jan. 11,
Garesche, Alex(ander) (P.): St. Louis, M(iss)o(uri)
to J(ohn Alphonsus) McMaster: (New York, New York)

McMaster's death was a great shook to Garesche. He had no suspicion of a dangerous illness; he had only heard that McMaster had been injured. 1887, April 3. He begins where he left off, after trying again and again to complete his letter and being unable to do so. For forty years McMaster was his personal friend. They began their career as Catholic journalists together—which to McMaster was indeed a vocation, to Garesche only to fill the vacation between his entrance to the bar and his practice. As editors they concurred in their views. Their friendship already existed before they met personally, and from the date of their meeting to the date of his death no shadow passed between them. Garesche thought McMaster a noble, brave fearless character, and esteemed no paper more highly than the Freeman which he always read, although sometimes the copies had to be filed away until he had time to read them. The issues since his death are now filed away, so that he has read no details of McMaster's death except a few gathered from other papers. Garesche is pained by the knowledge that McMaster lay for weeks on a bed of pain without a kind word from him, yet he remembers that McMaster is where he need not know of how Garesche remained in utter ignorance of his condition. He has perfect confidence in McMaster's slavation, for not even a priest could devote more than McMaster, who devoted his life to the service of God, although a priest by reason of his ordination is in a higher sphere. If Garesche can in any way aid (John Alphonsus) McMaster or any member of his family he need only be notified. McMaster also had faults, for his zeal sometimes ran to excess, and the faults resulted from the excellence of his motives. Convents, communities, priests, and others are praying for McMaster that he may quickly reach Heaven, in comparison with which the world and his family meant nothing to him. McMaster's prayers were answered—his daughters are all nuns, two of them Carmelites. He is glad Major Keiley has become administrator and mentor to McMaster's son. (John Alphonsus) McMaster could not have a better one.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) has just received (Corrigan)'s letter and the returned manuscript. (McQuaid) wrote also to (Ella B.) Edes on the same German question. He thought Msgr. (Donatus) Sbarretti would know all about the "Memorial" in re University, but it seems he did not. The idea (McQuaid) threw out was that the American hierarchy be consulted before any definite action by Rome. Archbishop (John) Ireland and Bishop (John J.) Keane have sent (McQuaid) nothing. (McQuaid) asks (Corrigan) for the paper. Father (Charles) McCready would have been the right man had he been loyal. (Corrigan) should not be uneasy about appointing a successor. What the parish needs is a good efficient pastor and in three months will almost have forgotten the Doctor. (Henry) George's paper was a decided help to (Corrigan). "Puck" with (Father Edward McGlynn) playing second fiddle, must have caused him to blush. (McQuaid) has not communicated with Bishop (Richard) Gilmour. He did write strongly to Edes about Poughkeepsie and made her understand that (Corrigan) acted according to his own choice. Father (Francis) Siegelack's resignation is a good thing because he lacks prudence and the power to keep out of a fight.

Yesterday, Edwards sent a Scholastic containing a little that related to the monument that was to be erected to Bishop (Simon Gabriel) Brute, and Father DeSeille, Badin and Petit. When Clarke brings out the third volume of the Lives of the Bishops, he is to receive the gold medal of the Historical Department of N(otre) D(ame). Clarke is to keep this a secret. Edwards will send Clarke the Scholastic and will try to fill out a set for him.

E(gan), M(aurice) F(rancis): Brooklyn, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father Donahue asked Egan to send Hudson part of his novel on Jewish life. The only fault Egan can find with it is the lack of human interest. (Patrick) Hickey has raised a loan from twenty priests which is a mistake. The Catholic News man (Herman) Ridder offered to buy Egan and the (New York) Freeman's Journal. Egan started a suit against him, which he answered by offering to start a news paper.

(McMaster, S.H.C.J.), Sister St. John: Sharon Hill, P(ennsylvani)a
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

Their father sent the port wine about the middle of November when John was in Philadelphia, and the next week she asked John to thank him for it. She asks him now to thank Joe Keiley for the photograph of their father which he sent her by Mary McAnerney. She will always be thankful for Joe and Jack (Keiley's) kind attentions. She received an answer yesterday from Sisters, M. Emiliana and Lazarine, whom she had written last week. The Sister gave (James Alphensus McMaster) some water of Lourdes just before his death, and he thanked the Blessed Virgin eloquently for this grace. Sister St. John is very happy in the knowledge that his last words were words of thanksgiving. He loved the Blessed Lady very much. God has been good to them all. She sends regards and thanks him for the Freemans.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(Corrigan) should make Father (Arthur J.) Donnelly temporary administrator at once. Some people will fight Father (Edward) McG(lynn)'s successor, but it will be over in three months. What is needed at St. Stephen's is a straightening out of accounts. The appointment of Donnelly will allow (McQuaid) and Donnelly to see if Father (Charles H.) Colton is the honest and true priest they believe him to be. (Corrigan) should act promptly. He can scarcely imagine the excellent effect on the non-Catholic population by the Church's action in setting aside McGlynn. (McQuaid) returns the printed documents. Many look upon (McQuaid) as of strong German proclivities. He has made no secret of his disgust with the choice of Washington and will write again to Rome about the Catholic University. His advice to Rome is to send a circular to the American Bishops to learn their opinions. Bishop (Louis) DeGoesbriand was very indignant at the idea of a general collection. The Germans as a body have lost all interest in the work.

Moran, C.S.C., Father P(atrick): Montreal, (Quebec)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Moran's efforts to get subscribers for the Ave Maria have not been successful. He cannot remember whether Father-General's offer was withdrawn. Moran regrets that Brother Jarlath (Jeremiah O'Brien) because of misunderstanding failed to make an effort while in Montreal. Father (Martin) Callahan of St. Patrick's Church offered to aid a representative of the Ave Maria to get subscribers. Moran expects to get back to Indiana. In answer to his letter Sorin asked him to wait until the end of the year. Moran describes the Congregation's school at Montreal.

Though they should not pray less for (James Alphonsus McMaster), still they can rejoice in the hope that he has already entered Heaven. She sends regards.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

In (McQuaid)'s letter yesterday, he inclined to favor the appointment of Father (Arthur J.) Donnelly. Now he feels Father (Charles) Colton's appointment would be preferable, if (Corrigan) is sure of his loyalty and grit. Donnelly's appointment would necessarily be a temporary one, and his withdrawal might be regarded by the enemy as a quasi-defeat. (Corrigan) will be surprised at the part the pious women will play. The leader of the choir is making herself conspicuous and ridiculous. (McQuaid) does not know Colton, but if (Corrigan) is satisfied, he should appoint him as administrator, letting him understand that the rectorship will follow as soon as he proves his capacity. Also let him know that Father (Edward) McGlynn will not return to the post. (Corrigan) should remove the assistants who do not cooperate with the new rector. (McQuaid) fears that the finances are in worse condition than surmised. He will write today in relation to the (Catholic) University. He is growing more opposed. There is a great deal of misrepresentation that ought to be stopped.

Ginocchio, J.B.: Naples, (Italy)
to Monsignor R(obert) Seton: (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

Ginocchio arrived in Liverpool September 25. October 24, he heard Cardinal Manning preach; part of his sermon was that the Catholic population of England had increased 33% in the last 30 years. Ginocchio has been through Holland, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. On his arrival at Chiavari and Mezzanego, he found quite a number of relatives, three of whom are priests. At Pisa he called on Seton's friend Fili(c)hi. Fillichi is 86; he has been quite sick; he is now well but rather feeble. Ginocchio spent 23 days in Rome. Monsignor (Denis J.) O'Connel(l) was very glad to hear from Seton. Ginocchio probably will leave Naples in a week for Messina, Egypt, Jerusalem, Greece, Turkey, Hungary, Austria, Venice and back to Chiavari. He hopes everything about St. Joseph's Church is getting along nicely; he is praying for Seton and Fathers Hall and Sullivan. He hopes the Sisters will take care of his little Ambrose and Josephine.

Lynch, Mother Baptista Ursulines, Valle Crucis,: Columbia, South Carolina
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

With regard to the mitre, she thinks it was worn only by her brother, Bishop Patrick N.Lynch of Charleston, S.C. The bishop was rich in bishop's paraphernalia. He sent a large box of vestments to her for safe keeping during the bombardment of Charleston, S.C., and when the Cathedral was burned he congratulated himself on having done so. But when the army entered Columbia, the soldiers sacked their convent and either stole or burned the vestments. It will be difficult to get relics of Bishops (John) England and (Ignatius A.) Reynolds (of Charleston, S.C.) owing to the destruction by war and fires. Bishop Lynch was tall and slight when young, but grew stout and robust; he had violet eyes, brown hair, was handsome and majestic.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) saw in the paper that Father (Arthur J.) Donnelly's advent into St. Stephen's was stormy. Pious women will be the worst mischiefmakers. (Corrigan) should stick to his decision firmly and coolly. Had (Corrigan) appointed Father (Charles H.) Colton and his courage had given out, (Corrigan)'s position would have been greatly weakened. Father (Edward) McGlynn's conduct yesterday leads (McQuaid) to think that the surmise with regard to opinion may have some truth in it. The tormentors of St. Stephen's will soon cease. Donnelly knows just what to do, but he must be given a body of loyal and effective assistants. The newspapers will make all the capital they can out of the sensation, but (Corrigan) should pay no attention to them.

Sherman, Ellen Ewing: N(ew) Y(ork, New York)

The book is in every way distasteful to her. No Catholic can give it an unqualified approval. Allen failed to enclose Mrs. (William) Sadlier's remarks. (McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: NewYork, NewYork)

McQuaid thinks the worst of the storm is over. Father (Arthur J.) Donnelly will quiet the turbulent and disaffected. The Fenian element will do their best to stir up trouble. The next one to be squelched is Father (Thomas J.) Ducey, for he cannot be trusted to open his mouth. Of course, Donnelly will tackle the church accounts as soon as possible. As Father (Edward) McGlynn was not a remarkable accountant there is no telling how the accounts stand. If the indebtedness is as large as it likely is, McGlynn's reputation will come down a peg. (Corrigan) did not catch it one tenth as bad as (McQuaid) in the Auburn affair. Pretending there is peace when there is not will only make the outburst worse when it comes. What (Corrigan) has gone through in the McGlynn case is for (Corrigan)'s good. (Corrigan) made the right choice in Donnelly. Father (Charles) McCready's speech in his church was disloyal, and if made without (Corrigan)'s permission, treacherous. (Corrigan) can now say that he offered a place to McGlynn's friend who might have smoothed over a great deal, but was snubbed.

The mitre sent Edwards was the one presented to him in All Hallows College, Dublin, at the time of his consecration by Cardinal Cullen, then Archbishop of Dublin, Feb. 3, 1861. The Pectoral cross which he wears was the gift of Mrs. Segrave, mother of Father Segrave, S. J. The ring he uses at present is the gift of Archbishop(Joseph S.) Alemany now in Valencia, Spain. After the Vicariate of Marysville had been erected into the Diocese of Grass Valley in 1868, - O'Connell's translation never took place owing to the reduced condition of Grass Valley- he received from Alemany the crosier sent to Edwards. Since his resignation he has lived in Los Angeles as the guest of Bishop (Francis) Mora. He will send a lock of his hair.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) returns Archbishop (John) Ireland's and Bishop (John J.) Keane's pamphlet on the German question. They may or may not know that (McQuaid)'s letters to Rome on the (Catholic) University (of America) are blocking their game in that direction. It is likely they know how (McQuaid)stands. His last letter asked that no settlement be reached until a letter is sent to all the American bishops by Propaganda. It is hard for(McQuaid) to give an opinion on the prudence of (Corrigan)'s communication regarding Father (Edward) McGlynn. McGlynn's defense that his doctor forbade him to go to Rome comes too late. The Holy Father will probably issue a dogmatic decision on the question. The worse (Henry) George writes against (Corrigan), the better for (Corrigan). Many of their poor people had been led astray by the use of the names of Cardinal Manning and Bishop Nulty. (McQuaid) is anxious for Father Donelly's success tomorrow. Donnelly will quietly ignore the public school children, the Fenians, and the politicians, and take up the collections. (McQuaid) asks (Corrigan) to give Donnelly his kind remembrances.

Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to Father James H. McGean: (New York, New York)

After difficulties in obtaining needed documents, and then in the printing of the book, Shea has sent to the patrons of his "History" the first of the volumes for which they subscribed. "The Catholic Church in Colonial Days" covers the history of the Church in this country down to 1763. The whole amount subscribed by the patrons of the work has been expended by Shea in producing this volume. Shea has sought nothing for himself. He trusts that no one will feel disinclined to continue the annual subscription of $50 to enable him to produce the second volume, which will be delivered before the close of the year. Owing to serious illness and frequent absence, Father A(rthur) J. Donnelly who acted for the committee, requests Shea to correspond directly with the patrons. The price per single copy for any remaining volume is $5. (A financial statement is given showing) $3,632 received from Donnelly and $3,652.55 expended.

He received a letter yesterday from (Walter) de Curzon Poultney. (Seton writes a memorandum at the end of the letter): The enclosure was a bookplate of William Gordon, Arms Gordon of Abergeldie, quartering Seton minus the bordure for difference but with a martlet en coeur, the mark of cadency of a fourth son. Poultney of Baltimoere is Seton's cousin.

Damien has received a large amount of money from England and has $4,727 in a bank in Honolulu.

Cardinal (James Gibbons,of Baltimore) is on his way to Rome, and she supposes he will stay with the (John D.) Keiley's. It would be nice if John would call on him, for he has been so kind to them, and has said he would have been glad if John had called on him in Baltimore. (McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) returns Bishop (Richard) G(ilmour)'s letter. (McQuaid) could interfere in the (Bishop Joseph) Dwenger matter only in a roundabout way. (McQuaid) has little sympathy with Cardinal (James) G(ibbons) in this matter. The appointment of Dwenger will be a disgrace, an injury to the church in the U.S., and bring contempt to the Holy see. (McQuaid) had a letter telling of the meeting of Bishops keane and Ireland with the Pope as regards the (Catholic) University (of America) and they seemed pleased as a whole. (McQuaid) will regret to see Rome mixed up in this failure. (Corrigan)'s statement in the Father (Edward) McGlynn case has had a good effect. (Corrigan) should not be let into any controversy with anybody. The Church books belong to the Church corporation and must be forthcoming at some time. A financial statement showing the indebtedness when McGlynn ceased to be rector will finish his business forever. (Corrigan)'s proposed arrangement is the right one. If Father (Charles H.) C(olton) proves the man (Corrigan) thinks he is, he should be given the deserved promotion. There are more traitors among (Corrigan)'s clergy than he has any idea of. (Corrigan) ought to be able to get the books.

The mitre he sent belonged to Bishop (James Roosevelt) Baily (Bayley). He now sends one that belonged to Bishop (Martin John) Spaulding (Spalding). In answer to Edward's questions, he would say that the Cardinal needs an ordinary mitre for general use. Parties from Philadelphia have written the Cardinal for relics for a Historical cabinet. Edwards can judge Connor's answer. Connor thinks the west needs building up. Philadelphia has had enough. The Cardinal would prize the mitres Edwards mentions very highly; he is one of those appreciative natures.

Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey sent Hudson the two marked letters solely to recall to Hudson something she is sure had escaped his memory and she explains her attitude towardMaurice Francis Egan, because of his remarks. She does not doubt Hudson's word.Dorsey realizes Hudson has stirred up "Palms",but she is thankful he has spared her sight of them. The faults of the story, which she hopes to purge in the new version, are discussed. "Palms" was not written to attract attentions of learned persons, but to awaken interest among the young in religion and ancient history. To Dorsey history illustrates what the Bible teaches.

(McMaster), D.C., Sister Gertrude: Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

She is proud of John, but she always felt that he would prove himself a treasure and comfort. She appreciated Mrs. (John D.) Keiley's letter. The Mother (Superior), who is confined to bed with a heavy cold and a bad knee, is proud of John, too, and feels sincere regard for him. They have been wondering what terms John made with (Maurice Francis) Egan, whether John would "run the paper", and Egan remain as editor. The likeness of their father is good. She asks him to send a copy of the Freeman's Journal which carries the account of their father's death and a picture, to an old friend. She commends him on his decision to keep two of the old rooms. P.S. The Carmelites in New Orleans have asked that the enclosed circular be inserted in the Freeman, and the (Mother Superior)' would be glad if it were done. She hopes John will give Father (J.J.)
