Sister has delayed writing to Hudson because of an epidemic of illness that swept through their convent school. She submits a sketch. MacDonnell sends the names of new subscribers for the Ave Maria. The only criticism she has of (Charles Warren) Stoddard's story "Fairy Gold" is that there is too little of it. She wishes she had the fortune of Hudson in having known Longfellow. Mannix inquiries if there is a possibility of publishing a magazine for children from Notre Dame. Some ladies, who were with Miss Mc Cabe in establishing the working girls home, have received the Archbishop's permission to establish a day nursery, to which they have added a home for destitute children. Elder has also given them permission to establish an Aid Society.

Edwards does not know how proud she is to have such a kind friend as he is. His letter gave her pleasure when exhausted from examining pension papers. In her office life she has nothing to complain of except the confinement. She longs for a home of her own. She encloses a letter from her sister, Mrs. (R.S.) Chilton; it expresses her opinion about her (Emily's) picture. She has some relics she would like to show Edwards when he comes to Washington.

Edwards wants to know if Clarke will get the person he mentioned to send the five or six letters of Bishop (Micheal) Egan for the Bishop's Memorial Hall. He has lately secured souvenirs of Bishops (Jean) Cheverus, (william) Dubourg., (John) England and(simon) Brute. If Clarke could secure souvenirs from old St. Patrick's of Bishops (John) Connolly (Jean) Dubois, and (John) Hughes, Edwards will send a valuable oil painting of any of the prelates by(Luigi) Gregori that Clarke might wish for himself.(P.S.) He asks when Clarke will publish his third volume. The Historical Department of Notre Dame will then give him a medal. When Clarke applies for souvenirs, he should not do so at the new Cathederal for there are none there. Some of Edwards' friends applied there so often that they probably think him a bore. Edwards ordered the Scholastics for Clarke and sends an account of Bishops' Memorial Hall.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(Corrigan) might give Father (George J.) Osborne permission to say Mass for a couple of weeks. He ought to get a bishop without delay. He simply robbed a poor people of many thousands of dollars. (McQuaid) has called Osborne's offense mismanagement; it was robbery. He borrowed money in large sums, using it for himself. For four years, he kept no accounts. (McQuaid) gave him an "exeat" when he said he would not apply to any diocese east of Ohio. Is it possible that Cardinal (James) Gibbons or Propaganda has furnished the "Herald" with private papers? The (Father Edward) McGlynn faction keeps up its bad spirit. (McQuaid) hopes the trip strengthened (Corrigan).Father (James F.) O'Hare and (McQuaid) are answering Father (Richard Lalor) Burtsell's plea in favor of Father (Terence J.?) Early. Their answer will be forwarded to Msgr. (Thomas S.) Preston.

S(toddard) C(harles) W(arren): Covington, K(entuck)y
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Because Stoddard is losing ground he has failed to send Hudson a copy. He has been thinking how pleasant it would be if Father (John) Zahm, C.S.C. could get two railroad passes to St. Augustine for Hudson and himself. He wonders if the bookdealer in Honolulu has been selling copies of the "Lepers of Molokai". If the man had any enterprise and was less of a bigot he might sell copies of it to visitors to the islands.

Edes, Ella B.: Rome, Italy
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edes thanks Hudson for the money. Waiting for the articles She promised to send for the Ecclesiastical musuem at Notre Dame has caused her to delay in writing Hudson. She has forwarded all the articles to the curator of the musuem and urges that a letter of gratitude be sent to the Pope, who provided a number of articles. Bishop (Peter) Dufal, C.S.C. told her that Father-General was coming to Rome.Edes hoped to forward the material on St. Bridget through Mrs. Cumming to Sorin, (Eliza Allen) Starr and the late Mother Angela (Gillespie). Cumming was disappointed when Edes told her that Gillespie's plan was absurd and impossible. She never goes into society, consequently never meets people. It is the only way to avoid mischief for Rome is a dreadful place for scandal and unoccupied women. Edes sends Hudson the Moniteur de Rome of last Sunday, which contains the document of (James) Cardinal Gibbons. This copy is furnished by authority and the notes are inspired personally by Gibbons. It is unfair to the Herald, since the translations it gave of the paragraphs it cabled were correct and literal.Nor is it true, judging from American secular newspaper, headlines, that it was universally accepted. She does not sufficiently understand the merits of the question to give an opinion on it, but it seems to Edes that any of these associations, which are not like the Guilds of old Catholic times can never last long. The Knights of Labor already appear to be breaking up. It is supposed that the Herald bribed the printers and secured an early copy, since (John) Cardinal Simeoni) told her that before he placed a copy in Gibbons' hands, the Herald had it. Edes has seen Gibbons but once and does not subscribe to the idea that the sun rises and sets in Baltimore.

Egan, Maurice F(rancis): New York, (New York)
to Monsignor (Robert Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

He is very much shocked to know that the paragraph gave Seton such pain. He trusted a young gentleman to make up the column, and Egan was surprised to see how it had been done. He has concluded that it will give the "Joke"too much importance to notice it at all. He thanks Seton for his contribution. He will make amends but in a more effective way than by calling attention to that absurd squib.

to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

The Father General has sent them a document of affiliation to the Order, which gives a participation in all the prayers and good works of the whole Order to (James Alphonsus McMaster), his family, and his relations to the third generation. It was signed in January, (1887), but the prior of Mt. Carmel, (Palestine), says it held from October, (1886), when the Father General who was visiting Palestine, resolved to grant it. They owe it to the Mother (Superior), who requested it. April 2, She has been thinking of him constantly. They will be glad to see him, and hope that he will visit Sister St. John (McMaster, S.H.C.J.) after seeing them. Sister St. John would be especially happy to see the document of affiliation.

Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, New Jersey
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Many of the letters Edwards sent him have been in several hands and no use made of them. Archbishop (John) Hughes had them and would not let Shea see them. In what Edwards gathered he has more material for a real history of the Church in this country than was ever dreamed of $#x2014;the almost unspoken thoughts, the bitter groans of zealous bishops and priests, their struggles. The genuine piety shown by the letters is very consoling; especially the letters of Bishop (John) England. In a man of action as he was, one scarcely expects tender piety. Shea will forward the rest of Edwards' precious letters the coming week.
