Stoddard's health has not improved. If he could get back to a Christian climate, the Pacific Coast approaches it, nothing will tempt him to leave. As long as Hudson has a breath in his body he will be grinding at the same old mill and when his life is over the mill will run itself into the ground. He asks Hudson to send him some money.  to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Toohey supposes the article he submits on Hanssen will be his last work for the Ave Maria, because he will be sent out on the missions with Fathers William Corby, C.S.C. and Daniel Spillard, C.S.C. What kind of a superior is Corby? As soon as Father Jacob (James Lauth), C.S.C. arrives he will begin packing. Toohey wonders how much time he might take to reach Notre Dame.

Orestes includes statistics of the age, height, weight and health of his family. He is unable to send his children to college but they read a great deal. He thinks Henry right about not grieving after wealth, for he seems to get along as well as formerly. The weather has destroyed their crops. He hopes Henry will be able to help his son John (Brownson) get charge of the medical department at Notre Dame, if one is established, for he is amply qualified and will not dishonor the name of Brownson there.

(Tiernan) F(rances) C. Fisher: Salisbury, (North Carolina)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's latest letter was a disappointment to Tiernan because she preferred that the books be published at Notre Dame. Tiernan has written (P.J.) Kennedy and if he will not give Tiernan, her moderate price she will leave the book unpublished and be compelled to hereafter abjure any distinctively Catholic writing. She rears that "Fairy Gold" is the last story of any length she can write for the Ave Maria. The volume "Tales For Eventide", which Hudson sent her make her regret that her stories cannot be issued from a press which does such charming work as that of Notre Dame.

Lambing, Father A(ndrew) A(rnold): Wilkinsburg, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Lambing submits an article. It may appear too pedantic in going into too many particulars, but that is for Hudson to decide. On August 4th, Lambing celebrated his eighteenth anniversary of ordination. Father Edward Sweeney, a victim of paralytic stroke for the last eight years, died on the eighth of August. Lambing is more radical on the subject of mixed marriages; could anything be done for the circulation of his pamphlets. He proposes to write an article on the Breviary.

Dorsey, E(ila) L(orraine): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey was glad Hudson could take the story "The Old Hair Trunk". When he comes to settle with Katherine Faxon, he should do it through Dorsey. She is sorry about the professor and will write him if Hudson thinks it would not bother him. Did he ever get his money back out of "Bob"? Professor (James) Edwards was as welcome as any one from Notre Dame, would be. Dorsey rejoiced to hear the Englishman still survived the hardships of proof reading and told Edwards she thought seriously of applying for the post of Assistant Editor. She submits a contract for Hudson's approval. The first sales will net each of them about $125. Dorsey is studying Russian this spring and translating three of Count Tolstoi's tracts. She thought of bringing out a book of Tolstoi's translated tracts, an idea which Tichnor's took up with enthusiasm until a man named Dole issued a translation of the same stories. Tichnor's suggested Dorsey's translation should be published in a good weekly magazine; the present rage for Tolstoi being a guarantee of success. She inquires what Hudson thinks of this idea.

In securing "Zoe's Daughter" for the series she will pay (Patrick) Donohoe $100, half of which he paid Dorsey for the story before the great Post Office fire; and since they share the profits of the edition, she supposes Hudson will be willing to pay one half the cost of the purchase of "Zoe's Daughter".

Emery, Susan L.: Dorchester, Massachusetts
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sometime ago Emery sent Hudson an article composed of the letters which passed on the occasion of Mr. Hugh Chapman's recognition of Father (Joseph) Damien (De Veuster's) life. Hudson returned the article with the statement that he had the letters on file. She inquires if Hudson has any objections to her publishing the correspondence. Her brother the Reverend Stanley Emery, an Episcopalian minister, on a recent trip to England attempted to visit Chapman, but because of the man's illness was unable to see him. Another Episcopalian minister, the Reverend Edward Parker, who knew Chapman at Oxford, says his actions concerning Damien were just like him.

Nealis, Jean E. U.: Carleton, New Brunswick
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Even though she has not contributed to the Ave Maria in a long time she has not lost interest in the magazine.Stoddard sends her the monthly issue regularly. She and her family are settled in a cottage ajoining Father Dufferin. Nealis was shocked by the sudden death of Brother (Francis) de Sales (Andrew Sweeney) and the death of Sister Cherubim,C.S.C. She had a pleasant visit with Father O'Neil, C.S.C. and was pleased to hear that he was not going abroad this year for this would be a terrible loss to the faculty of St. Joseph College at Memramcook. The last letter she had from Notre Dame was Mr. Cleary's, who said that Mrs. (Mary) Phelan is very ill.

Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister Elizabeth: (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister was pleased to receive Hudson's letter written during these scorching days. They are nearly dissolved in Philadilphia by old Sol's bounty. She thanks Hudson for the Monthly part of the Ave Maria and the extras. She has seen no notice of "Once Upon A Time" except a favorable word in the Freeman's-Journal. The story "Old Hair Trunck" is pretty. Miss Julia Allen brought Mrs. Cave out here; She writes for "The Young" and they thought Sister could give the lady some information about magazines. She use to write articles for the Paulist's Young Catholic. Maurice Egan's book subtracts from the value of his criticism. Christian Reid describes American women well, Egan is so national, as to be ridiculous over German and Irish churches. His article in the New York Freeman's Journal brings this out. She sent "Happy As a Queen" to (Patrick) Hickey with a story entitled the "Banker's Clerk", both of which he published in the Illustrated Catholic Amercian. Father (Ralph) Dewey, S.J. sent her copies of his article "Mme.Galitzin" an article which she hopes Father-General will read.

(Tiernan) F(rances) C. Fisher: Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan was delighted to find that she had misunderstood Hudson and that there was hope of Hudson's issuing her books. Had she understood Hudson correctly, she would not have told (P.J.) Kennedy that he might have them at any price. She does not know what Kennedy's decision will be because he has gone to Paris. When she said she was afraid she could not write another long story for the Ave Maria, she was not complaining of Hudson's rates of remuneration. For a religious journal they are liberal. She simply meant that she could not afford to write a novel for serial prices. With stories she always expects to sell the copyright but the market for Catholic books is so poor, that a story with a religious theme brings only the price paid for its serial publication. Tiernan hopes she may always contribute to the Ave Maria. Since she has received $450 for "Fairy Gold", there is nothing due her.

Vermont, (Edmund) de V.: New York, (New York)
to Monsignor (Robert Seton: Jersey City, New Jersey)

Vermont has found that as always, (Seton) is right. Pluscardin then remains in possession and the secret of his identity will never go out of this office. Vermont wishes for no change in (Seton)'s article; first because it is exactly right and secondly because (E. Brockholst) Livingston's was written on seeing the article. The controversy is most interesting and shows that The Curio knows its subject and is impartial in the search for truth. Vermont has received (Seton)'s notes on heraldry; he has added a few remarks and they will appear in the October issue. They have decided to publish every month something like the portraits of Vanity Fair; Mr. de Grimm, the eminent artist is in charge of the portraits. Vermont is trying to have a paper that will be read by everyone. He regrets that his return to the city prevents him from receiving (Seton) in his home and presenting to him the Countess de Vermont whom he has many times told about (Seton)'s kind welcome and his lively and original understanding of things in general. (P.S.) The St. Memin collection is not only safe but in their safe. He asks just a few more weeks to select the medallions he desires reproduced.

Since Toohey has not started his missionary career from which Father Provincial Alexis Granger, C.S.C. expects so much hard cash, he need not consider himself tied up by his quasi-promise or resolution to write for the public. His objection to being sent to Watertown is that he feels that when a priest comes home he should be with brother and priests and not thrown in among young fellows studying for the priesthood. There is no place at Notre Dame or the Presbytery except you put Father-General and Father Granger out and send Brother Gus off with them. Toohey expected Father Jacob (Lauth, C.S.C.) this week.

(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund: Valparaiso, Chile
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They are staying with the Jesuit Fathers until the Passionist monastery is finished. The cost of building the church has been defrayed by Mrs. Edwards. When his father was a British chaplain in Valparaiso between 1852 and 1856, his family lived in Cerro Alejre a section of the city where the Passionist church has been built. Hill describes his recent journey around Cape Horn from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso. Chile is like a Catholic country. It has a zealous priesthood and a laity full of faith and devotion. The government, however, is not to be relied upon because freemasonry is the enemy here. He has written the first chapter of "A Short Cut to the True Church" and will shortly send it to Hudson. Hill submits a lyric poem.

It is not true that the report of Monsignor Perico was telegraphed to the Pilot, entirely favorable to the Irish people, because Perico has sent no report. The document of (James) Cardinal Gibbons is buried in the depths of the Propaganda and no examination of its merit has taken place so that the reports in American newspapers of its immense weight on pontifical decisions is distorted. There is no truth to the tale that Detroit will be made an Archdepiscopal See. The bishop will be selected in November. It is not true that Bishop (John) Loughlin has been summoned to Rome. Edes lists the articles that are being sent to Professor James Edwards for the museum. She asks that her name not be mentioned in connection with them. The American rector here has accused her of writing the editorial that appeared in the Freeman's-Journal of May 7 that advised Cardinal Gibbons to mind his own business.
