Shahan, Father T(homas) J.: Hartford, Connecticut
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

If Edwards will loan him the manuscript of LeProhom's life of Bishop Tyler, he will be obliged to him. He would be glad to know of anything touching the Catholic religion in New England. The first Catholic publication in New England, "The Catholic Press" was published in Hartford until 1835. Later it merged with the "Catholic Herald" of Philadelphia. The bishop has consented to send a mitre of Bishop (F. P.) McFarland. He encloses a sermon of Tyler; a note on the back shows he preached it more than once.

Mannix, Mary E: St. Martin's, (California)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix returns (Ella Lorraine) Dorsey's letter, she is most complimentary. Mannix would like to translate or adapt a combined life of Don Bosco and his mother. Mannix received a reply to her letter to the Catholic World, in which she asked if an article on M. Dupont and the Devotion to the Holy Face would be acceptable. They replied it was against the traditions, aim and ambitions of the Catholic World to become the special organ of any one devotion and feel compelled to decline Mannix's contribution.

(18)88 Jul. 5
O'Neill, Father Arthur B., C.S.C.: Memramcook, N(ew) B(runswick)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

O'Neill forwards a marked copy of the Catholic Record, London, Ontario, in which appears a sketch of Father (G.) Lefebvre C.S.C. The sketch was written simply to advertise St. Joseph's in an indirect manner. O'Neill is of the opinion, the "bluenoses" of Holy Cross are too modest in talking up their colleges. Ever since O'Neill read the autobiography of P. T. Barnum he has been a firm believer in the potency of printer's ink.

Edwards letter contained a suggestion full of possible delight for her. She cannot hope to visit Notre Dame now. The Centennial is in full progress. She hopes Edwards will get down to see it. She asks if there is a chance for her in the "Ave Maria". The editor of the paper here refused to publish her story because she made her characters talk the brogue.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Boston Highlands, (Massachusetts)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The periodicals Hudson names have arrived. The photos Stoddard mentioned are noticed in the Scholastic of June 2. Magnificent views of Notre Dame have been taken by McDonald of South Bend. The first installment of the "Mission Life" has been run. No news from Stubbs or from Philip B. Stoddard wishes he could feel safe with (Father Martin?) Regan about, but he can't. Regan is not one of Christ's folk. Stoddard would like to see Rene (Papin); he loves him. Stoddard went to Marblehead aboard the Norma on July 3rd, with a party of Bostonians, on the 4th he sailed to Gloucester, Cape Ann and anchored off Kittery, Maine, then back to Boston. After a cruise to Maine, Stoddard hopes to see the Storers at Petersham. Stoddard went to 57 Mt. Vernon St. back of the State House, to a house with a door plate bearing the name Adams, but it was closed for the season. However, a man named Dwight familiar with the place showed Stoddard around. Dwight gave up his office in the Library at Washington, and is a member of the Adams family, spending his time at the Old House in Quincy, doing research on historical documents of the Adams family. Dwight is the guardian of the whole treasury, but is his own master.

Corby, C.S.C., Father W(illiam): Notre Dame, Indiana
to (James F.) Edwards: Toledo, Ohio

He spent three hours in Toledo and did not know Edwards was there. They are in the midst of their retreat. Father (John) O'Connell (C.S.C.) will start for Salt Lake tomorrow; he looks very poorly. They must do all they can to make the 15th a big thing. P.S. Father (Andrew) Morrissey's (C.S.C.) father died; he will leave to spend three weeks with Father Luke Evers. Father Francis Ryan S.J. is preaching the retreat.

(Egan), M(aurice Francis): Brooklyn, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Egan does not think he could go to Notre Dame at a better time. The "Freeman's Journal" is in fair repute. Egan feels he is in a position to add a little to the reputation of the college. He wants to make his work at Notre Dame his life work. He is sure of two congenial friends, Hudson and Father Walsh. Egan got out of the friction, and diplomacy, and the "society" business which Kate hates, and can relieve Hudson of some of the anxieties of finding copy. Egan caught a glimpse of (James F.) Edwards. If Egan can satisfy him he is sure he can satisfy anybody at Notre Dame. Egan will dine with him at Monsignor Seton's tomorrow. An entente has been arranged between the Cardinal and the archbishop, through Egan. He is afraid the people at Notre Dame will expect a poet with some frenzy in his eye. Egan must cut his hair and wear decent clothes.

Walsh, C.S.C., Father T(homas) E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Father Walsh encloses receipts for Brownson's remittance of yesterday for which he sends his thanks. He hopes to be able to accept Brownson's invitation on his way back from the gathering of the champions of the "cause" in Boston. They will probably "come out strong" for Fisher and Brooks. It appears that the redoubtable Father (Stanislaus) Fitte was not so badly used up as we supposed by the men who bludgeoned him with Rosmini and other heavy missiles during the whole night after Commencement, and the sympathy we all expressed for him on Thursday morning was wasted, for instead of being "laid up for repairs", he had taken the early train for Chicago. The difference between some men and steam engines is not great. Kindest regards to Mrs. Brownson and Philip.

(Weid, Mother St. Charles) Superior: Ursulines, Columbia, S(outh) C(arolina)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The crosses and beads have not reached them. They will be very grateful for them. She asks how to send the "Misscellany." They wish they could present them in honor of Father Sorin's Golden Jubilee, but they would be glad for the set of Brownson, Edwards promised. The Parochial School question will be settled by having lay teachers. It is out of the question for their small community to be divided. Has Edwards heard of "Monsignor" Bouland, a Catholic priest, who in revenge for not being recognized by the Catholic hierarchy has fraternized with the Episcopalians? The papers states that he would probably be the first bishop of the Gallican Church. She relates at length concerning Bouland.

1888 Jul. 11
Dutton, (Ira B.) Brother Joseph: Kalawao, Molokai, (Hawaii)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

Dutton sends an enclosed clipping from an old New York Tablet. Hudson's beautiful gift brought considerable alteration and enlargement of the Church. It needed improvement because of age and the increase of population to 825. The main portion of the enlarged church is built of rock. When alterations are completed, the new altar and Hudson's safe and exposition will appear to good advantage. Father (Joseph) Damien is busy with the church and a new dormitory for boys. How everything is to be financed is a problem, but the government is helping with the dormitory. A description of the work on the church is given. Damien is too busy to write now. He is well, but the disease advances and causes more disfigurement. Father (Lambert L.) Conrardy is in good spirits and busy learning the language. A generous citizen of Honolulu gave $5000 for a new water works. Mr. Meyer, the agent of the board of health, is having constructed at Kalaupapa a series of houses for the women and children. It will be taken care of by the Franciscan sisters now at Kakaako. The branch hospital near Honolulu will be broken up and all sent here. Dutton sends regards to (Charles Warren) Stoddard.

E(dwards), J(ames) F(arnham): New York, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(Maurice Francis) Egan and Edwards dined today with Monsignor (Robert) Seton. Seton invited Edwards to stay at his house and extended to Hudson an invitation to visit and stay with him. Egan and Seton will be at Notre Dame, August 15. Yesterday Edwards was entertained at the Catholic Protectory. Father (W.) Daly of the Cathedral and Father Evans and Edwards visited there in the afternoon and remained until 9 P.M. Brother Leontine took them through all the departments where trades are taught and Edwards examined the system of training. He was more than convinced of the importance of giving attention to the individual. There are 1300 inmates from the gutters and byways of New York, yet Edwards saw only busy hands, smiling faces and perfect order. Leontine said it was possible to do almost anything in training the boys, and he has the confidence and esteem of clergy and laity. Father Walters, McGovern and O'Dwyer were invited by Leontine to dine with them. Leontine told the party that Dr. Clarke assured him the third volume of the Deceased Bishops would not have been written but for encouragement received from Notre Dame. Monday, Edwards dined with Father (Michael) Lavelle, who is spreading the fame of Notre Dame, and the priests of the Cathedral. Father (Anthony) Lammel, the great musican of the Cathedral, will be at Notre Dame. He has volunteered to go to Hartford with Edwards. Father (Thomas McMillin) McMillan, C.S.P., was present, so was Father Valois, an old priest from Montreal, and six other clergymen attached to the Cathedral. Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan) came into the city today for a few hours. Edwards told him he desired (Luigi) Gregori to paint his portrait. Father Lammel and Evans and Edwards are going tomorrow to dine with Mr. and Mrs. Egan. Mr. Monroe will be present. Egan wants Edwards to visit the Century people. Ed- wards had a letter from Kehoe today who says he has secured great treasures in the book line.

P(ope), A(my) M: Three Rivers,Q(uebec)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

Hudson's letter, Post Office order, and her rejected manuscript arrived a week in advance of her at Three River. She has in her possession the book Vingt Annees de Missions etc. Does Hudson wish her to send translations? Pope wishes Hudson to give the Toronto Review a pat on the back. The editor and proprietor called the other day. He is a fair haired baby of 22, an aristocratic young Irish convert. The Ave Maria is a household word here. The Jesuits and the Sacred Heart are the same everywhere, friends always. The poor fathers are having a sad seige here, Monsignor (L.) Lafleche likes them but such of his clergy as have friends in Quebec do not, and an ugly feeling is being spread. The fathers are only professors at the college and confessors at the church. This Quebec versus Montreal affair will never end. It is nice to think that such brave and experienced men as Lafleche and Monsignor (L. C.) Sacheside with Montreal. In comparison with them (Elzear) Cardinal (Taschereau) and Monsignor Edmund Langevin are but carpet knights.

P(ope), A(my) M: Three Rivers, Quebec
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Pope wishes to know who wrote the article on Sister Jacques' cure at the Sault, which appeared in the Ave Maria a fortnight ago. Pope sent a "bookmark" to Mere Margarerite-Marie whose book is a treasure of history. No, Pope is not very much fogged with regard to "Yankees," she has always been chums with the consul's family in P(rince) E(dward) I(sland). She is glad to see Annie Sadlier in the Ave Maria again, but Sadlier should not call Adam Dollard the Leonidas of Canada without an apology to de Salaberry. Pope was going to translate Le Roman D'un Jesuit, but Benziger wrote Sadlier that Father Quinn had done so and they had refused it. Would Hudson take an account of a colony of Irish Ursulines which she found in the manuscript of Bishop (Joseph Octave) Plessis' Journal? Montreal gave Mr. Rameau de St. Pere (?) a banquet. When the orchestra struck up the Marseillaise with one accord the leading French gentlemen present sat down. Rameau who is a royalist "pur sang" was hopping mad. It will teach a lesson to those who go in for parading the tri-colors in Canada.

Straniero, Mgr. G(ermano): Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

If Edwards had sent what he asked for, the written consent of the bishop of Fort Wayne to the demand of Father Walsh in regard to making Father Sorin a titular bishop, Straniero could have presented it to the Propaganda and very likely with success. He is afraid now it is too late. He cannot understand why Bishop (Joseph) Dwenger could fear a refusal of Rome when Straniero stated positively if the bishop had taken the initiative the matter would have been treated at the first meeting of the Cardinals. Straniero fears that Bishop (Peter) Dufal (C.S.C.) is against their idea. Dufal has obtained from the Pope a Plenary indulgence for everybody who assist at Sorin's Mass on Aug. 15. It is just what Straniero had obtained. Dufal desired to take for himself all the merit of the thing. About the approbation of the sisters(of Holy Cross), it is not so easy to obtain anything so soon.

Toohey, Father J(ohn), C.S.C.: Watertown, Wis(consin)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Toohey is convinced that if (Joseph) Cardinal Pecci was writing his instruction to this country he would, when speaking of the duty of Catholics to obey the Church, have referred to contributing to the support of their pastors. If Hudson choose to add a word on that point, Toohey thinks it would be a benefit to some readers.

Richards, H. L.: Winchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Richards writes in behalf of John O'Brien, who is connected with the Charities Bureau of Boston, and who is interested in St. Mary's Infant Asylum. A fair is being planned for this institution and they would like to have a scholarship to be competed for at the fair. O'Brien is a subscriber to the Ave Maria, hence interested in Notre Dame. St. Mary's is under the charge of the Sisters of Charity and is a very deserving institution. Would Hudson advise concerning a scholarship at Notre Dame?

He asks Hudson not to bring out the series in book form until (Hill) sees the corrected copy. Hill supposes the stoppage occurred elsewhere than at Panama. Aloysius, Sister M.: Notre Dame, Indiana
to (James F. Edwards: Toledo, Ohio)

She is glad that Edwards is working for the Jubilee. There will be room for all the priests who come. It was nice of that Brother to offer to send some of the boys' work for the Jubilee; Sorin is the one to appreciate all that. Edwards should have as much as he can said about the Jubilee in the papers. Prof. (Joseph A.) Lyons is very poorly. He and Father John O'C(onnell, C.S.C.) were to got to Salt Lake but it is given up. But Phony will probably get some thousands for himself. Egan finds himself besieged with requests not to leave New York. (James F.) Edwards has been driving about a great deal. He received a bust of Archbishop Hughes and a letter of Cardinal McCloskey. Edwards is the most zealous, energetic, and single-hearted man. Egan is anxious that Hudson arrange a plan for him, so that he will be able to say how much Hudson expects of him in '88-'89. Egan copyrighted "A Chat about Books" when he left the "C(atholic) W(orld)," and asks about utilizing it. Egan hears from Father Walsh that Hudson has a capable assistant in(John F.) Fearnley Egan will be with Hudson on the 15th to prospect about a house. Hudson will have no reason to regret Egan's coming. If Egan has seen the best of New York, that will make him appreciate Notre Dame even more.

H(udson), Father D(aniel) E.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)
 to James (Farnham Edwards):

Hudson trusts this acknowledgement of Edwards' letter of the 11th will reach him before he leaves New York. Edwards is to thank Monsignor (Robert) Seton; Hudson is pleased that he will be among the visitors on August 15. Not till (Maurice Francis) Egan is actually present will Hudson believe that he is to be here. Hudson wishes they had a few members like Brother L(eontine, F.S.C.) of the Protectory but their system is not likely to produce or hold such men. Hudson has no right to Dr. (Richard H.?) Clarke's gratitude; none of his books or announcements were ever sent to the Ave Maria. The retreat is over; (Luigi) Gregori has finished his picture; they had a little celebration for his birthday. Poor (Joseph A.) Lyons grows weaker. The Chapter opened yesterday.

(Weid), Mother St. Charles: Ursuline, Columbia, S(outh) C(arolina)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They enjoyed very much the account of Edwards' travels and his visits to the various dignitaries. Of M. Bouland they hear nothing except that he has been up to Greenville lately. They understand that he was not called on by either of the Episcopal ministers of this place. He cannot have written that article in the Forum for he speaks only broken English; but somebody wrote it for him. The Ursulines send their respects to Father Sorin and ask that he pray for them. They are having a hard time to restore their school, which was destroyed during the war. She lists the names of the sisters at the convent, July 23. She acknowledges the present of the indulgenced crucifix.

Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister E(lizabeth): (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She thanks Hudson for the Memento. Mother Edwards says it was the Month's Mind, since Father-General (Edward Sorin) was kind enough to supply Hudson's place. Ten Broeck sends three manuscripts. The annual retreat begins August 6; the director is Father Peter Finlay, S.J., of Dublin now of Conewago. She hopes they are not going to lose (Charles Warren) Stoddard but have two professors of English literature, as she hears (Maurice Francis) Egan is going out to Notre Dame.

Fanning, Father John A.: London, (England)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Brownson will recall that Father Fanning called at his office and traded the Encyclopaedia Brittanica for Brownson's Works and Webster's latest Unabridged for Father (B.J.) Wermers. Having some books with him that were an encumbrance, he hired a typist named Bryan on the suggestion of Father O'Reilly, and left the books and another box which he had ordered to be sent in Bryan's care. After Father Fanning left Detroit, Bryan overcharged him for the typing, extorted money from his housekeeper for express charges, and then sent only the first box of books. Brownson is asked to take possession of the books if possible, and to let Father Fanning knows what happens. He will return to the United States after he has been to Rome and Palestine.

Toohey, C.S.C., Father J(ohn) M: Watertown, Wis(consin)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Toohey just arrived back from giving a retreat for the Sisters of Mercy at Janesville and attending his mission at Fort Atkinson. He is glad Hudson made no addition to what His Eminence wrote. Father Ja(me)s J. Quinn of the Cathedral at Cleveland wishes to continue his subscription to the Ave Maria. He was administrator of one of those poor islands on the coast of Galway or Mayo, who wishes to become a religious after first paying those that enabled him to make his studies for the priesthood. It was Hudson that suggested to Toohey to apply to Bishop (Richard) Gilmour on his behalf. Toohey hopes those sisters in Fond du Lac won't ask for a nine day retreat with five sermons a day.
