St. Albert, (Canada)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Grandin received the Ave Maria, Hudson's note and thanks him for both. Poverty prevents Grandin from subscribing to the Ave Maria, but if the success of the Ave Maria permits Hudson to send it gratis, Grandin and his missionaries would receive it with gratitude.

Shea, John Gilmary:
(Elizabeth, New Jersey)
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He is still ill; the least exertion exhausts him. The strain of the last three years has broken a constitution never rugged and he has passed the limit of the oldest of his family. It was a bitter disappointment to forego the trip to Notre Dame. He returns the letter of Bishop (John B.) David. It is perfectly clear from the letter that David was the second bishop of Bardstown; that he invested Bishop Flaget and sent his resignation to Rome. Yet at Louisville they deny that he was bishop.

Stoddard has had a touch of malaria. Yesterday he was in Cambridge on Brattle Street just above Longfellows, and today he visited Faneuil Hall, the old State House, and the Bunker Hill monument. Stoddard tells Hudson to send him no money but to keep it for a later date. Hudson's brother called on Stoddard while he was down-east, he was sorry to have missed him. Stoddard asks Hudson to send a copy of A Troubled Heart to Mrs. L. Dennison, Cambridge.

Straniero, Mgr. G(ermano):
Rome, (Italy)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
It was impossible for him to do more not having the invitation of the Bishop of Fort Wayne for making Father Sorin bishop. The Holy Father did not allow Archbishop Jacobini and himself to come to America. With regard to making the church of the University of Notre Dame a Basilica minor, the Pope asks the Bishop offer many reasons for it. Straniero suggests as reasons that it is the church of the largest Catholic university of America and that it contains the paintings of Gregori. About the Sisters (approval of the rules of the Sisters of the Holy Cross), Jacobini has taken the affair in his own hands and has written to Sorin. P. S. He cabled today about two new bishops named for Detroit and Wichita: John S. Foley of Baltimore and (John Joseph) Hennessey of St. Louis.

Dorsey sends the last of chapter twelve and a part of chapter thirteen. The "Leader" has been good to her ventures and she is thankful. Regarding the chances of a girl to succeed in Washington as a short hand reporter, Dorsey would say no. The supply exceeds the demand. A government position is hard to get and the salary of $720 is inadequate to meet living expenses in Washington. Sylvia Hunting is sweet to fancy her work.

(DeVeuster,)SS.CC., Father Damien J(oseph):
Kalamao, Molokai
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hudson's kind letter of July 9 is at hand with the letter of a very charitably intentioned person who informs them of the means her father used to cure leprosy. For this incurable disease Damien believes in the possibility of a miracle such as reported in Holy Scripture, but not in a natural remedy to cure leprosy. The green coverlet of their graveyard will put a stop to the progress of his disease and then all will be right. He continues to be happy and resigned to the Holy will of God. With the desire to have the Kalamao church in proportion with the beautiful tabernacle, Damien is daily at work with the mason and carpenters building a quasi new church; the cost of which will run up above a thousand, but they expect the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph to provide the means to settle the bills. The building is 70x30x18 feet. It is to be covered with corrugated iron. The belfry is above the porch or entrance. Forty feet of the building is stone, the rest is wood. A good old Irishman, a leper, is the mason and he with two of the boys do the wood work.

Pope, Amy:
Three Rivers, Que(bec)
to Father(Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Pope is learning faith wholesale from Father (W.) Gagnieur. She came to the conclusion that by putting that paper in the Montreal Star she will help the causes of colonization, so she wishes Hudson to return it. The Record takes anything so return every rejected scrap Pope does not like the style or translation of Mrs. Ramies' book. Take the "Annals of Saint Anne" and look up the paper on St. Anne de Beaupre from the Catholic World which is written by Annie Sadlier and Hudson will find that Madame Ramies has cribbed wholesale. About the chaplets Father (A.) Nolin has some. Pope has no photos. She sends a paper, if Hudson may take it, cut it, or trim it as he likes. If Hudson should take it, don't keep it until October for if the Ursulines and grand vicaire Caron do not see anything of Pope's in the Ave Maria — they will think her a fraud.

Albeggiani, Augusta Henderson:
Palermo, Italy
to Father(Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She is an Englishwoman, a convert who to escape persecution from her family came to Sicily, where she married fifteen years ago, a Palermitan, a professor of Italian and German. He is a quiet studious man not given to politics therefore little respected by the free thinkers and progressives of the city. Being young enough to begin life anew, she has a strong preference for America, particularly Ohio, Indiana or South Illinois. She and her husband are not ambitious, any thing her husband is fitted for, he would gladly accept, as professor in some college or high class school, or a place as librarian or any thing, so that it be a sure employment. She gives as references the Duke Corlonia in Rome, the late Lord Mayor, the Rector of the Royal University of Palermo, Signor Paterno and the Princess di Belmonte, Lady in waiting to the Queen of Italy.

She then visited Watertown, where she met the sister of the second pastor. It was only two years ago that she learned anything about the life of the founder, Father Charles Dominic Ffrench, O.P. Jordan met an old lady who had known Ffrench in St. Johns where Jordan had heard he had trouble but the statement of this old lady set her completely at rest. Ffrench and Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick were warm friends. Ffrench founded the parish in Lawrence, now in the hands of the Augustinians.

(Dorsey, Anna Hanson):
Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Dorsey was pained by the news of Hudson's illness and inquires if he can not be spared for a month from the Ave Maria, during which time he should take a vacation. If the Ave Maria goes out of Hudson's hands it would decline to its old status of goody and dull. Nellie (Ella Lorraine Dorsey) remarked that if Hudson retires she will never write another line for it. Her doctor thinks her heart is in a precarious state. Dorsey received (John) Murphy's statement with only $148 and charges for books which were paid last year. He is a skinflint, but by the disposition of his father's will, he has two greater skinflints behind him, who form the company and will until he is twenty-five. Regarding "The Flemings", Father Edward Sorin, C.S.C. gave (Patrick) O'Shea permission to publish the book, but in an innocent way and she has never blamed him. Dorsey wrote the story on condition that she retain the right to publish it in book form when it was finished in the Ave Maria. Both Father (Neal) Gillespie and Mother Angela (Gillespie), in their letters to her, agreed to this. Unfortunately, she has since burned the letters and cannot show the written agreement to Sorin, who was in Europe when it was made. When Sorin landed in New York, on his return from Europe, O'Shea got his permission to publish "The Flemings" in book form, without Sorin's knowing the condition under which it was written for the Ave Maria, O'Shea then announced the book as being in Press, just as Dorsey was making arrangements with Kelly & Piet of Baltimore to publish it. In justice to her, it should be explained to O'Shea, who has had the profits from the book for twenty years, that he has no right to the copyright he holds on it. Nellie has gone to Rehoboth Beach for a rest. Dorsey thinks Nellie can do something excellent with her pen. Louis (Mohun) spends much of his time with Commodore (Daniel) Ammen, who gives him notes of introduction to Senators, that he might talk to them about the Nicaragua Canal Project. Mohum is an authority on this subject since accompanying the expedition to Nicaragua. She thanks Hudson for his remarks on Religious Orders. Did Pope (Leo XIII) grant an indulgence to all who participate in Sorin's jubilee?

Hill sends the revised article. Hudson will have seen some notice in the papers of the terrible disaster which befell Valparaiso on the 11th of August: a storm of wind and rain of extraordinary duration. Five vessels were wrecked in the harbor one day and another the next. Along the bank on which the railway runs, next to the sea, a reservoir suddenly burst and precipitated its contents down on inhabitated valley and along the the business part of the town and into the sea. Houses and stores were destroyed in the town, the loss of life cannot yet be estimated but must reach several hundreds, chiefly women and children. It is the greatest disaster that has ever befallen Valparaiso.

Dallas, A(lexander) I.:
Orlando, Florida
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
If Dallas has not written it is due to his change of residence and the yellow fever fright. He regrets to learn of the death of Professor (Joseph) Lyons which was announced in the (New York) Freeman's Journal. He notices that Maurice (Francis) Egan has joined the Notre Dame faculty and Dallas considers him a gain for he is a fine scholar and a true Catholic. Why did Dallas leave Zollwood and come here? Because he could not count on the regular visits of a priest and also discovered the title to his land to be defective and gave it up. Here they have the services of Father (J. J.) Creed a young priest who attends Sanford and Orlando.
