Clarke, Richard H.: New York, (New York)
to (James F. Edwards): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Clarke would take great pleasure in journeying to Notre Dame if such be the wish of the University. At present there are some obstacles. Clarke recently met with a severe accident when he fell from his horse. The trip will have to be undertaken when Clarke has recovered, in a month or six weeks. Clarke suggests that the University send the medal to the Archbishop of New York and that it be conferred at the Catholic Club of New York. Clarke sympathizes with the gentlemen at Notre Dame over the death of Professor Lyons. He asks to be remembered to Egan. How does Egan like the change from New York to Notre Dame? P.S. Clarke thinks Bishop (John Ambrose) Watterson alluded to a journal of Bishop (Sylvester) Rosecrans. Cardinal (James) Gibbons lent Clarke a journal of Archbishop (James Roosevelt) Bayley. Bishop (John J.) Keane may be an appropriate person to confer the medal.

(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund: Valparaiso, Chile
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The St. Joseph's Journal is a school affair but others besides school girls write in it. What Hudson says about Hill's pen and his article "Short Cut to the True Church" is encouraging. Father (R.) Clarke, S.J. would have influence at Longmans. Father Matthew Russell, S.J. wrote to Father (Thomas) Jenkins about Hill and said that he would like to see a fresh collection of Hill's poems. A.B. Hill is his sister Amy B. Hill. Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.) reached Buenos Aires on the Vigil of the Assumption after a voyage of thirty-five days.

Mannix, Mary E.: San Diego, California
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix is thankful to be away from the old scenes where she suffered so much in the last three years. The journey to California was pleasant. During the boom time the house they leased rented for one hundred and twenty-five dollars, but since the boom collapsed things are different. The pastor in San Diego, Father (Anthony) Uback, came from Spain with Bishop (Francis) Mora twenty years ago and is not liked by the people, but Mannix has found him friendly. His demeanor is saintly although Mannix will admit that his manner would make people look upon him as the Bishop of San Diego County. Uback is respected by Protestant as well as Catholics and has done much for her husband (John B.). Regarding Uback's assistants, it is enough to say that Mannix wonders why certain priests were ordained. California is a refuge for unfortunate priests and San Diego takes the palm in this respect. Her children attend a convent school run by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, whose mother house is in St. Louis. She will send Hudson and article shortly.

Hyde sends the books he spoke of when he saw Edwards at Notre Dame. He felt much mortified at writing Edwards, asking to be remembered to Professor (Joseph A.) Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister Eliz(abeth): (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The loss of their convent by fire was a shock to the entire community. Their friends have been generous with aid. The Misses Drexel sent $10,000 and Mr. Hickey says the Mother House sent a similar sum. One anonymous donor sent nine thousand dollars, while F. O'Brien and Mr. Farren of philadelphia gave one thousand dollars apiece. Archbishop (Michael Corrigan) and Father John Scully, S.J. each sent five hundred dollars. What was most touching were the offers of meat and groceries made by the butcher and grocer. Plans are being made to build a new convent, in the mean time, classes will be conducted in Mr. Ottendorfer's mansion through Mr. Weigenfeldt. They have four cottages on the Mountain, one was part of the Lorillard Estate, that was purchased for $80,000 in 1849. The Lorillard Cottage will be for the free school. During the forty years the House has kept the two parochial schools of Fathers F. Griffin and (Anthony) Kesseler, free of a farthing of expense. Lately, Kesseler, who is very nationalistic, got some Dominicans to take charge of his children and now they are discharged for Milwaukee Sisters. She has heard that C(harles) W(arren) S(toddard) has apostatized. Sister is afraid she will never again see the Freeman's-Journal, for a friend sent it to them, but now it has changed owners. She cannot understand what difference the politics of a Christian newspaper makes; she would not be a Democrat, yet she likes to read the Freeman's Journal. Although she never thought about this topic until she saw a tirade in the News on this subject. Strange, to be a good Catholic one must be a Democrat.

Boyle, Cha(rle)s: San Antonic, Texas
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The poem "Our Lady's Intervention" by J. Ryan published in the Ave Maria of September 15, 1888 reminds Boyle of a similar incident concerning a fire in Gonzales, Texas. The man who invoked the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, told Boyle that he had attended a mission given by Father (Arnold) Damen, who spoke on the virtue of using the brown Scapular in invoking the aid of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. At the fire he followed instructions. Boyle relates another incident involving the Scapular worn by a Mexican who was being shot by a party of six men.

Straniero, Mgr. G(ermano): Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He received Edwards' letter with the Constitutions of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. He spoke to Mgr. Jacobini about that and was told that the matter was still in consultation. Jacobini asked Cardinal Mazzella to make an exception in Father (Edward) Sorin's case and to let him be the Superior General of the Sisters not only in spiritualibus but also in temporalibus. The general rule is that what concerns the temporalities must be separately administered. Exception will be made for Sorin having regard for his merits and only during his life. P. S. He has just written his 8th letter of Catholic news.

The only letters of Hudson's Pope has kept is the one containing the portrait of him. Like Hudson, Pope has but nibbled at the (Jesuit) Relations. She has found a rare book containing a collection of Jesuit letters from Rome; two of them from Father Brebeuf. Father Jacques de la Ferte was Abbe de la Magdaleine, just as Bishop (Francis de) Laval was Abbe de Montigny. Can Hudson visit the Canadian mission territory? Pope inquires if there is a way of getting (Maurice Francis) Egan's photo for Mother Daly. When Pope was young, she was advised not to write. She inquires if Hudson is an American, because he writes like an English gentleman.
