O'Connell, Father J.J.: Belmont, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Richard H(enry) Clark(e): (New York, New York)

O'Connell acknowledges Clarke's of Dec. 30. He is sorry he cannot send the notices Clarke asked for, in regard to his nephew. He knows all about him in general. It will be necessary to wait a while for the items are spread around. He is utterly ignorant of dates, what Clarke mostly wanted. He asks if Clarke is sure he had been appointed to Richmond. O'Connell is not, as the nephew had written that he appealed his nomination. O'Connell wants the 3 vols. offered at $7.50.

Weld, Mother St. Charles: Ursulines, Columbia, S(outh) C(arolina)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She hopes Edwards' health will be completely restored by his visit to Europe. He has so much to do that life with him is a continual rush. Has he forgotten to send the enlarged photo of their late Mother M. Baptista Lynch? She asks at what price would he send Christian Reid's works. She would not be surprised to hear of Edwards' starting some of these days in one of the aerial navigators. What a wonderful power electricity is ! But of all inventions that of walking on water is the useless.

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Hudson wishes Brownson and his household and all his friends in Detroit a happy new year. He intended to suggest that the appearance of Brownson's translation (of Tarducci) be delayed for the celebration in '92, that the book be published in the autumn of '91, and that meantime portions of the translation be given in the Ave Maria. His general health is fairly good, but his sight is failing. He was disappointed at not being able to go to Detroit at Christmas.

Dorsey, E(lla) L(orraine): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey thanks Hudson for sending the check. Between 10 and 1 o'clock New Year's Day, Dorsey was at the White House at the Presidential reception for diplomats and the public. She was interested in looking up Mr. Herbert, son of Lady Herbert of Lea. Dorsey was happy to see a colored priest say Mass Sunday at her church. She is charmed that Hudson liked her story "Tiny Tim" and thinks he will enjoy her "Saxty's Angel". The first eight chapters of "The Jose-Maria" will be forwarded next week. Brother Francis is the only negro Dorsey ever saw who looked unconcious of self in a conspicuous situation, (Anna Hanson Dorsey) was charmed with the book, but Hudson has her letter and understands her reason for raising the question. She suggests Hudson print in pamphlet form the best articles of the Ave Maria semiannually.

Delbaere, Father H.: Brimfield, Peoria Co., Illinois
to Father (Edward) Sorin, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has seen in the "Ave Maria" that contributions to the College library would be welcome. He sends a catalogue of the larger portion of his library, many scarce precious old volumes of 1st class Catholic writers. He has several times enjoyed the hospitality of Notre Dame, especially in the passion-week of 1874, when he was treated the way Sorin knows by ex-Bishop (Caspar H.) Borgess of Detroit. He suggests that his library be put alone in some remote corner.

O'Connell, Father J.J.: Belmont, N(orth) C(arolina)
to (Richard Henry Clarke): (New York, New York)

O'Connell cannot send ecclesiastical items about the Vicariate (of North Carolina) and its excellent Bishops because he has suffered so much already in this way that he decided never again to attempt it, that is to write about the living for a book. He asks Clarke not to take it hard; Dr. (James J.) Corcoran advised him not to. He had suppressed facts and still made enemies. He will nevermore entangle himself and asks Clarke to make no mention of him. He awaits Clarke's book but is pleased that Clarke found his book useful. It must have amused Clarke to meet himself. Peace to the soul of John O'Kane Murray!. He was not generous. P.S. If Clarke goes to the office of the Sun and examines two of O'Connell's letters published about three years before, Clarke will find all he could say, aided by Hoffman's Directory. O'Connell does not have his letters. Probably the Bishop has them filed in his library.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Renouf has some fairy tales for the Youth Department of the Ave Maria. The success which has attended the publication of her uncle C. Brentano's fairy stories in America leads her to believe that such kind of juvenile literature is in vogue in the United States. She has translated a number of religious poems of Luise Hensel from the German and would like to see them published in the Ave Maria.

Seton, Harry: Fort Spokane, W(ashington) T(erritory)
to (Monsignor) Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

Robert's of the 27th came duly to hand. He is glad that Robert paid Elise (Elizabeth Seton) a visit at Huntington. He wishes he could go with Robert to the Holy Land, but he doubts if he will ever cross the sea again. If he can only get East next spring he will be willing to return West and resume his exile for another 2 years. Harry had a letter from Annie this morning. He expects to hear from will in a few days; he was to spend Christmas at Cragdon with Tom and Bel. They had no priest at Christmas, but Father (A.M.) Folchi, (S.J.) came last Saturday and is still with them. Harry was very sorry to hear of the death of Father Hecker; he remembers going with Robert to call on Mr. Revere. If everything goes well, he thinks Cragdon will repay their patience. What does Robert suppose they are needed for by Clerk of Surrogate Court on February 12?

Dwight, Thomas: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Monsignor (Robert) Seton: (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

Seton's letter of December 17 reached Dwight when he was ill. As Seton says, there was little new in the protest last year against the Education Bill. With regard to their city election, Dwight agrees with Seton that it was unfortunate that as Catholics they felt they must vote for (Hugh) O'Brien, because the other side has so allied itself with the Know Nothing ring that it was not fit to touch. O'Brien was as good a mayor as most and honest. Still a change would have been desirable. Dwingt believes one of the chief causes of the present anti-Catholic excitement is: when the Queen's jubilee was celebrated in June 1887, there was almost a riot because a number of Englishmen were allowed to have festivities in Faneuil Hall. Prominent among the movers in opposition, not leaders of the mob, was John Boyle O'Reilly and a Catholic priest. It was rather too much to have the Irish dictate who should use Faneuil Hall. Hence the growth of the British American Associations which are more or less openly anti-Catholic. The School Question was a handle. Dwight believes this rash action had a great deal to do with bringing about the present state of affairs.

1889 Jan. 7
Richards, W(illia)m: Washington, D.C.
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Michigan

On reading the enclosed editorial from the Catholic American of Nov. 24, 1888, Richards wrote the enclosed article which appeared in the same paper, Dec, 29, 1888; they may be of interest to Brownson. The article is not all he could wish, but he wanted draw attention to the fact, apparently not known to Costelloe, Lilly and other able English and American Catholic writters, that Dr. (Orestes A.) Brownson worked out and presented most clear and satisfactory solutions of the great problems that are puzzling the 19th Century. Last year Lilly published a series of able and interesting articles in the London Tablet which just missed the important point Dr. Brownson clarified in his articles on the Incarnation. Scarcely a month passes that Richards does not see in some Catholic publication an article by some archbishop, bishop or learned theologian which assumes a natural end for man or fails to see the grand harmony between the natural and supernatural and speaks of the ancient gentile religions as originating in the natural reason, overlooking the fact that every truth in any of those religions was simply a survival from the primitive revelation. Richards was pleased to see for the first time the second edition of the Convert and Brownson's preface to it, the point of which was clearly stated for the first time Richards can recall; he wishes that Brownson had published it in the Works. It is strange that Catholic teachers should have distrusted Dr. Brownson for his denial of a natural beatitude for man; Richards wonders whether they now allow their scholastics to study him, for it is a pity if they don't. He would like to know whether Brownson's father ever entertained or expressed the idea which Richards first got from Father Faber's Creator and Creature and his Blessed Sacrament that the decree of the Incarnation in the Councils of Eternity, besides being the first act of the Trinity ad extra, which Brownson also taught, necessarily implied the existence in the Divine Mind of the Idea of man, so that when he was created, he was made after the Image of the God-Man. Richards has heard many sermons on the Incarnation but only one satisfactory one—by Bishop (John J.) Keane of Richmond—presented that idea. Perhaps Brownson will be interested to know that after Richards received his letter on the Rosmini matter, he wrote to his brother (H. L. Richards) in Boston. This letter was sent on to Father (William) Lockhart who wrote to Miss (Charlotte) Dana acknowledging his error and offering to correct his statement in some public manner, if desired. Richards asks whether Brownson's Works have been called for from abroad and whether there is any demand for copies of the old Review. He would like to have the enclosed articles returned.

Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey received Father (Edward) Sorin's letter with the pressed flowers from the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem together with the news that Sorin would be in Washington this summer. She acknowledges receipt of the bound copy of "Palms". Kathleen O'Meara's death is a loss to the Catholic world. Her novel "Beatrice" is a delightful Catholic reading. Canon Taylor's outbreak about the failure of Protestant missions has caused a sensation. The negro convention is over. The sight of a negro priest at the altar excited interest among the higher class of educated blacks. As a general thing it is not a safe thing yet to have many priests of that race because they are too near their slave days. They are a people of wild enthusiasms. Dorsey has just read Lew Wallace's "Boyhood of Christ". He has taken it bodily from the "Apocryphal New Testament".

Toomey has much hard work and he has received many hard knocks from the Grangers, but he is gaining ground. He received six converts into the church during 1888. (McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) met Archbishop (Joseph) Duhamel of Ottawa. Duhamel let out that Rome proposed to establish a sort of ecclesiastical court, headed by (Cardinal James Gibbons), to hear and decide all ecclesiastical cases, except money ones. This week (McQuaid) will take up the Father (Richard L.) Burtsell case. The telegraphic despatches mention (Corrigan)'s pastoral of Sunday. The rector here thinks (Corrigan) should have allowed the Father (Edward) McGlynn business to die of itself, but (McQuaid) told him that waiting for a natural death had proved useless. (McQuaid) cannot make out how (Msgr. Denis J. O'Connell) stands toward (Corrigan). He has great influence at the Propaganda. (McQuaid) wrote to Father (Charles) McD(onnell) to say that the Father (Terence J. ?) Early case was settled according to (McQuaid)'s demand. This will be bitter for Early and Burtsell to swallow. (McQuaid) has good reason to believe that he will be equally successfull in the Father (Louis A.) Lambert case. The probabilities are that he will be allowed to go to some other diocese. (McQuaid)'s case will be presented to the Propaganda this week or next. He cannot say when he will leave Rome. He has had great fun over the University. Bishop (John J. Keane) is wonderfully good-natured. "The Nun of Kenmare" furnishes the text now. (McQuaid) tells him that he is in good company with Gibbons, Corrigan, Bishop (Richard) Gilmour and other dignitaries. (McQuaid) gave Cardinal (Ludovicus) Jacobini a short statement in relation to the Statutes (of the Catholic University), pointing out some of its dangers. Many people here really believe in its success. They believe that all American Bishops are enthusiastic over the affair and look forward to wonderful results. What a disillusion is in store for them. P.S. They say the Pope's letter on the Italians was intended for South America, but the harm has been done.

Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

He is sorry to hear that Edwards' health is not of the best. Shea is laid up with a fractured knee cap, but is trying to carry on his work. The agreement Edwards sent, Shea had a copy in Archbishop (Ambrose) Marechal's hand, but the original in Archbishop (John) Carroll's hand with erasures is extremely curious and important. Most written about Bishop (Patrick) Kelly's career at Norfold (Virginia) is incorrect. Shea feels that the publication of his life of Carroll will bring out material that will make revision necessary. He gave offense to some of the Germans. The origin of the German church in Philadelphia was queer. Shea will copy the Carroll-Molynoux agreement and return it.

Pope, Amy (M.): Three Rivers, (Quebec)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

Hudson's card reached her at St. Maurice, where she had for a fellow guest Father Frederickde Gleyvelde, the Commissaire de Terre Sainte in Canada. She has secured some of the blessed rose leaves from the shrine at Cap de la Magdaleine for Hudson's eye trouble. Pope has been writing only for the Summerside Journal and Montreal gossip for the Review, because her time is taken up as a consultant in the Department of Public Works on a project of making maps of each Canadian diocese. She sends a story which de Gleyvelde told her in French, together with stories she has written. The obituary of Father Nazaire Charles Antoine Boudreault, who died on the Eve of the Epiphany is sent.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard acknowledges receipt of Kathleen O'Meara's autograph. The Christmas number of the Ave Maria was good. Stoddard wonders if Hudson could issue a number with which he would be satisfied. He has heard of the "Overland" article and thinks it a rummy thing to do. Stoddard sends a Munich Kalendar together with a photo of St. Anthony. Hudson is requested to send all the money that is due him to his sister. He has had some letters from Robert Buchanan.

Hudson is keeping Brownson's interesting sketch for Lent. Brownson's name will secure more readers, he is sure. Perhaps Brownson will be willing to sign it when he sees the proofs. Brownson has been considering Hudson's suggestion about publishing his translation of (Francesco Tarducci's) "Life of Columbus". (Lawrence) Kehoe advised him to have it published by Appleton, Harpers or Lippincotts because of the small size of the editions sold by Catholic publishers. He inquires if a portion of his work were published by the Ave Maria, it would interfere with its acceptance by any but a Catholic publisher. The last number of the Colorado Catholic contained a letter from F.J. Kramer telling of a conversion resulting from a reading of his edition of his father's works.

Fallize, C.S.C., Father M(ichael) Ph.: Chittagong, (India)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Fallize sends news of the missions of the (Congregation of) Holy Cross in East Bengal. His present concern is his congregation in Chittagong and in Akyal, the missionaries in their respective fields of labor, and providing for the missionaries' needs. Father-General (Edward Sorin, C.S.C.) has promised four or five priests in the fall and possibly some sisters, but considerable material assistance will be needed for the maintenance and building of churches, schools, hospitals and orphanages. He asks Hudson to recommend their work to the readers of the Ave Maria. The need for Catholic missionaries and material assistance from American Catholics is great and can do much good in India. The former Administrator Apostolic of the Diocese of Dacca, Bishop Gregory De Groote, O.S.B. has departed from the mission. He was to leave his faculties to another member of the Benedictines. Conley, J. W.: New York, (New York)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Gonley thanks Brownson for the two excellent lectures on anthropology by Father (Thomas A.) Hughes, (S.J.), which he sent him; he would like to see the lectures on biology. The lecturer has made good use of the doctrine of reversion of varieties to the original species. This doctrine is admitted by those who assert that man was evolved from the ape, but they have failed to give an example of man's reverting to the original apish type. It is more likely that the offspring of the original human parents have gradually varied and degenerated owing to the circumstances which Father Hughes has set forth, and that, in accordance with this same law of reversion, all varieties of mankind will eventually revert to the original perfect type of the primitive pair. Father Hughes has an analytic mind, is a master in synthesis and can adapt scientific language to the popular mind.

Hudson should pay towards this bill the balance of the funds he holds for De Veuster. The remainder of the bill will be paid from the funds De Veuster has on deposit with Bishop and company, bankers in Honolulu. De Veuster is anxious to have the shipment because the work on the church will soon be finished. They now have upwards of one thousand patients. Three sisters are at Kalaupapa caring for a portion of the girls. They are erecting new building for men and boys. Since Father (Lambert) Conrardy is staying here, a new house is being built for him. Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Hudson is also of the opinion that Brownson's translation (of Tarducci) had better be entrusted to one of the leading Protestant publishers. No doubt there would be an objection to Father Hudson's first plan, but he suggests that Brownson give the Ave Maria one or more original articles using the Italian work as a source of information only—Columbus' devotion to the Blessed Virgin, an account of his chains, his inner spirit, his mission, etc. The work would be altogether too voluminous for the Ave Maria. Father Hudson gets the Colorado Catholic and has a faint recollection of seeing the article to which Brownson referred, but missed reading it. If he can recover the paper he will send it. He writes in great haste, with his table covered with unanswered letters, unread mss. and the like. His eyes are better again, and he hopes to see Brownson before Easter. Brownson's labor in editing his father's works has found great fruit already.
