Berlinquet, A(my) M.: Three Rivers, (Quebec)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Illness has kept Berlinquet from answering Hudson's letter. She never received any message from Madame Daly. While the children interest her and she loves them, she hates the house work. Berlinquet misses her work and letters from friends. She has no time to write and is unable to find an English-speaking confessor. Berlinquet asks Hudson for stamps for her stepson's collection.

The beautiful print of Seton's grandmother was left on Saturday and she thanks him for it. About the reading— she read her extracts at Mrs. Marquand's and so gave a grand subject in a grand mansion. S(eton adds a note on the letter) Mrs. Drexel, a lady of considerable literary talents and a convert of high social position. The letter is a propos of a reading on Mother Seton.

Brooks, Constantina E.: Albany, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Brooks was planning to move but that has been changed. She is reluctant to have her name placed among the contributors to the magazine, since a list of the latter is headed "Catholic Writers". Brooks feels she cannot be so classified if this designates Catholics who write on religious matters.

Starr, Eliza Allen: (Chicago, Illinois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Starr was sorry to see no one from Notre Dame, not even Professor (James F.) Edwards. The lecture was a success. Archbishop (Patrick Feehan) and Bishop (John) Moore were present. (William J.) Onahan introduced Judge Waite. Starr promises to send Hudson a copy of the Isabella paper containing the lectures and hopes he will comment on it. She will also send one to Father (John A.) O'Connell and requests that Hudson asks him to write if O'Connell likes it. She will send one to Father General.

Finlay, Father P(eter): Dublin, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Like Hudson, Finlay regretted (William P.) Coyne's decision to seek a fortune in the United States. He thinks Coyne has much in common with (Maurice Francis) Egan. The literary sensation over here is W. O'Brien's "When We Were Boys". There is a feeling amongst the clergy against the way O'Brien treats of religion, but as yet it has not been put into print. Finlay asks to be remembered to Father Provincial and Father Rector.

Scammon, E(liakem) P(arker): Aubudon Park, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Gen(era)l R.P. Kennedy: (West Point, New York?)

He writes to beg Kennedy's assistance in behalf of John Foster Seton, son of Captain Henry Seton of the U.S. Army and grandson of Major General (John Gray) Foster who commanded the Department of the South during the Rebellion. Young Seton will be 19 on June 16. His father was Scammon's Chief of Staff in Florida; he was educated at an Austrian military school and was an officer in the Corps d'Elite. His father William Seton was formerly an officer of the U.S. N(avy). At the outbreak of the Civil War the father made his son leave Austria to accept a Captaincy of colored troops. (Here Monsignor Seton has inserted the note) "a mistake- white troops." Scammon thinks the service records of father and grand father justify the application for a cadetship at West Point. Scammon hopes Kennedy will so far recognize the claims of his old Commander and lend assistance in behalf of young Seton.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Has Hudson seen two small volumes, "Colombo" by Bernard I(saac) Durward and "Sonnets of Holy Land" by Father John T. Durward? The sonnets are excellent and the booklet contains photogravures from photographs taken by Father Durward on the first American pilgrimage to the Holy Land. She encloses a clipping on "The Angelus".

O'Neill, C.S.C., Father A(rthur) B.: Cote des Neiges, Q(uebec)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

O'Neill offers to write an article on the Virgin's Nativity for the Ave Maria. O'Neill is finishing a legend from D'Apilly. He expects to be in India within the next six months and asks Hudson to jog Father-General about his application for a change of province. If he goes to Bengal, O'Neill promises to send Bengalese correspondence for each monthly part of the Ave Maria. He asks Hudson if he can find any information as to whether or not to let his beard grow. He submits a sonnet contrary to his custom of sending them to the Pilot.

1890 May 5
Fitzgibbon, John J.: Chicago, Ill(inois)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Fitzgibbon encloses $60 for the set of Brownson's Works sent to P. Cavanaugh. Brownson's bill sent to Father (Timothy) O'Sullivan was mislaid. Real estate has advanced fully, 100% in this part of the city in the last year; the deposits in their bank have more than doubled. Father O'Sullivan bought six acres of University of Notre Dame, and will clear $6.000 on it; but if that great corporation can back out of the contract, it will readily do so. He hopes Brownson and Mrs. Brownson will pay them a visit this summer. He was in Washington the other day and went out to the Catholic University; He was charmed with the wooded hills and delightful scenery surrounding that superb structure. They have three boys and a girl thus far, all well and strong.

Munson, Jo(h)n W.: St. Louis, M(iss)o(uri)
to Austin E. Ford: N(ew) Y(ork, New York)

Since his return from the East he has been too busy to think of the matter they talked over. There are many features to be considered in a partnership. He believes he can run the (New York Freeman's Journal) circulation and adverttising up to whatever standard he chooses; but his views may conflict with Ford's. If Ford will sell the paper outright he would pay cash. When he goes East they can talk it over.

Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, N(ew) Jersey)
to Father P(atrick) Corrigan: (Hoboken, New Jersey)

A statement he inserted in the last number of the (Catholic) News leaves Shea free to withdraw whenever Corrigan finds it necessary. Last week he did much work at Baltimore, and today he hears of a large batch of documents coming from Rome. His volume is half done. He got out volumes I and II alone by night work about 25 hours a week. Now with Corrigan's help he can devote 55 hours a week to the work. The connection with the "News" helps him in his work. However, if his name on Ridder's paper affects Corrigan's appeals, it must come off.

1890 May 6
(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

He has received (Corrigan)'s letter of April 22. (Corrigan) is now to be put on a gridiron and broiled just as (McQuaid) was. Sending this simple case of insubordination of Father (Richard E.) Burtsell to a General Congregation is making government of the Church in America impossible. To force (Corrigan) to keep Burtsell in New York City instead of Roundout is practically to condemn (Corrigan). In (Corrigan)'s defeat, and it will be unless Burtsell goes to Roundout, all the Bishops in the country will have to suffer. As long as Rome kept the Father (Louis A.) Lambert case open the disturbances kept up at Waterloo. Lambert is in charge at Scottsville. (McQuaid) interdicted two men from going to church in Waterloo until they repented and repaired the scandal given. They had defied the authority of the pastor, refused to pay pew-rent, abused and calumniated their bishop and finally brought Father (Edward) McGlynn to Waterloo. The scandal given to the laity was exceedingly great. The civil courts understand Church rights better than Rome, and threw out the suits of these two men against the constables who ejected them from their pews. These two men have paid Burtsell to carry their case to Rome. Menghini is hired by Burtsell. Their plan is to torment the Propaganda until a compromise is offered. (McQuaid) has just written to Bishop (Edgar Philip) Wadhams that it would be better to wait for the action of the St. Louis Province with regard to Omaha. (McQuaid) thinks the Province does not want Bishop (Maurice Francis) Burke. (McQuaid) is prejudiced against Burke on account of his backing out of Cheyenne. In case the St. Louis Province does not want him, then let him go to Ogdensburg. Should he be accepted for Omaha, they can find a third candidate of Ogdensburg. It was Bishop (Winand M.) Wigger who suggested Father (John J.) O'Connor when no one else had a candidate. Bishop (Stephen) Ryan of Buffalo is gradually breaking down. Cardinal (James) Gibbons came to New York to open a fair. What he will not do to keep before the public! (Corrigan) should read "The Catholic Democracy of America" in the Edinburgh Review and show it to Cardinal (Camillus) Mazzella. (McQuaid) will send copies of the Ritual of the U.B. (United Brotherhood), known in America as the Clan-na-gael. Some priests belong to it. The Baltimore Mirror announces that Msgr. (Denis J.) O'Connell is returning to Rome to resume his duties at the College. He has been sounding some American Bishops on Rome's project of establishing an ecclesiastical tribunal for the U.S. His questions were in confidence. O'Connell has not yet set foot in Rochester. Gibbons was invited to lecture before a Catholic Club at Cornell University, but gave the invitation to Bishop (John J.) Keane, who accepted. His lecturing would be equivalent to approving Cornell as a place for Catholic students. He did not lecture. Keane was to set out on a tour of Seminaries to get students for next year's work and (McQuaid) protested. (McQuaid) encloses a cutting from the New York Times of May 8 (no enclosure). Rome must order Burtsell to Roundout.

(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund: Buenos Aires, (Argentina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hill sent the request for prayers to Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.). The rule of their House is to say two masses every month for their benefactors. Their General Chapter opens today. The English Provincial, Father Vincent intends to visit Argentina. Hill thinks the chapter must decide either that the English province shall have its mission in the River Platte or leave an experiment to be tried for a couple of years. He does not see how they can continue as they are now with little hope of getting novices. Amy (B. Hill) is taking the "A.M." through Burns and Oates. Father Constantine, the superior there, sent for 50 copies of "Short Cut".

Marchal, Marie: Paris, (France)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Before receiving Hudson's letter of April 21 she had written to the editor of the Catholic Review and had received an unfavorable answer. The letters Hudson saw in the Catholic Review, which were signed Temoin, may have been those of her cousin Kathleen. She sends a notice of a miracle of Blessed Perboyre performed in 1290. The Corpus Christi ceremonies at St. Jean and St. Francois, at which the Cardinal Archbishop officiated were imposing.

Goldsmith, Father Cha(rle)s F. X.: Chippewa Falls, Wis(consin)
to Father D(aniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Goldsmith has been an invalid for two years and while he has charge of a large parish he has been kept from doing the work he was accustomed to do there for twenty-five years. Ten months ago he began publishing the Catholic Sentinel with flattering success. When laid up last week, he sent to the office a copy of the Ave Maria with the article on Japanese missions marked, intending to print extracts from it. The manager instead printed the entire article. Since the article was taken from European Catholic magazines and neither new or original he could see no harm in using it. Goldsmith is sorry it annoyed Hudson and is ready to make an apology.

Mannix, Mary E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix received a letter from the Superior of the Sisters of Notre Dame convent in Cincinnati stating they were not surprised to learn that Mannix wrote "Two Schools". They thought the style of "Jeanie Reilly" resembled Mannix's style of writing. She has plunged into the study of German and offers to send a translation she made of a German poem. The Poor Souls Advocate has no well defined place. If Hudson should decide to publish either "Two Schools" or "Jeanie Reilly" in book form, Mannix is confident that the Sisters of Notre Dame would buy a good many copies.

His portrait has been photographed by Father (George M.) Searle, (C.S.P.), the astronomer. He has come upon a negative of the Lyric in San Francisco. Does Hudson recall how he went out of the Lyric to join the Bohemians and how the Reverend Pinky White came to them. The other day Stoddard met White. Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister E(lizabeth): (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She was aware Mr. T.'s sister would not be pleased if the volume were not highly extolled. Sister asked Hudson not to print, if he could not manage adroitly to draw something kind in consideration of the declared charitable object. She saw a reprint of (Maurice Francis) Egan's article in the "Lecoulleux Leader". It is denied by the Jesuits that Father P(eter) Finlay composed the Lyceum censure of convents. As the Fathers Finlay have two sisters in the Religious of the Sacred Heart, it is strange that the editor accepted that contribution. Their 25 Mother Vicars are in General Council at Paris and Sister is sure they will spare no effort to please the prelates. She believes that "Old Nick" is angry at the new convent.

Fitzgibbon, J(ohn) J.: Chicago, Ill(inois)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Fitzgibbon's wife and children are in Morris, Illinois, for the past week or so, and he spent last Sunday with Father (Timothy D.) O'Sullivan, who has grown quite stout and is looking very well. Both regret that they were not aware of Brownson's being in Chicago last December. Fitzgibbon lives at 7720 Bond Avenue, Cheltenham and describes its rail connections. When Brownson comes, if he will notify him, Fitzgibbon will meet him at the station. The journey Brownson has mapped out for himself and his daughter will be a great treat, but he must not cheat them out of a visit; perhaps the young lady might be left in their care for a while. Father O'Sullivan got the best of (the University of) Notre Dame: he put his contract on record and they had to come to him. Fitzgibbon has read Father Joseph Rickaby's Ethics and has begun the third volume by Father John Rickaby.

Hayes, James W.: Montreal, (Quebec)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father Reuben Parsons started for New York before Hudson's letter arrived, because of his mother's illness. Parsons has returned, but is too upset over his mother's death to answer the letter. The newspaper account of the burning of the Asylum under the care of the Sisters of Providence were not exaggerated.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Brookland, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson may already have seen the "Open Letter" by R(obert) L(ouis) Stevenson. Stoddard received it direct from Australia and has seen nothing in the public press on it. He wishes the Ave Maria might have the first slice out of it. When he gets at his Father (Joseph) Damien (De Veuster, SS.CC.) sketch, Stoddard will have his say concerning the Stevenson reports. He has conceived a sketch about Walter Murray Gibson. He opposed whole foreign elements in Hawaii for years and was finally banished and died in a San Francisco hospital.

Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister E(lizabeth): (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Like the "Nun of Kenmare" (Sister Mary Clare Cusack), Sister ought to apologize for giving Hudson an impression far from her sincere intention, when she forwarded that book. Ten Broeck asks that "Discovery" not be noticed unless something kind can be said of it. She had not read it, but was influenced by the praises of A(rch)b(isho)p Ryan and Messrs. (George D.) Wolfe of the (Philadelphia) Standard and Abell of the Balt(imore) Sun. The former superior at Eden Hall, Mother (A.) McNally died and also Judge A. J. Parker of Albany, her father's brother-in-law. She criticizes an evaluation of (Maurice Francis) Egan in the Catholic Review. She had a chat with Father (Francis) Brady in which he admits that Father P(eter) Finlay wrote what he is accused of.

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Hudson rejoices to hear that the Life is ready. It will be valuable and timely and he congratulates Brownson. Father (Thomas E.) Walsh tells him he engaged a man to photograph the Columbus pictures only a week or so ago but cannot say when the work is to be done. Hudson will announce the book in the Ave Maria soon. He asks what of the contribution Brownson was to make and whether he could furnish something of the work. Hudson had hoped to be in Detroit tomorrow and Sunday to talk over the matter, but will have to telegraph Father (Ernest Van Dyke) that he cannot go. He will never see Detroit again; his work and worry increases and his strength does not.

O'Neill, C.S.C., Father A(rthur) B.: Cote des Neiges, Q(uebec)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

O'Neill sent an article on the Death and Assumption of Mary. He understands Hudson's disinclination to mention O'Neill's application to Father-General (Edward Sorin, C.S.C.). He found Hudson's advice to write to Sorin in French "rich". When addressing the community at St. Laurent College, Sorin used English. At Notre Dame he used the same language and then called on Father (John A.) Zahm, C.S.C. for an English speech. Sorin would suspect latent irony if O'Neill wrote to him in French.
