Mannix, Mary E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix is sending the remainder of the article on German Marian poetry with two other pieces, one done by her sister. Next week they are all going to Pacific Beach for a rest. Mannix and her husband went to Los Angeles last Saturday. They stopped at St. Vincent's which is under charge of the Lazarist fathers. They called on Bishop (Francis Mora) and saw Father (Joachim) Adam. They went up to Pasadena, a spot settled by wealthy Easterners who came there for their health. The priest of whom Mannix wrote to Hudson has been suspended by the Bishop. It appears there was good reason for this judging from the interviews now being published. The priest who gave the retreat at the convent said the want of piety in California can be explained by the existence of no real home life. (Maurice Francis) Egan is felicitous in his choice of subjects for "Chats with Good Listeners".

Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister E(lizabeth): (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She finds (Maurice Francis) Egan's chats invaluable. Hudson accused her of thinking Egan wrote that unfortunate review. She supposed that Sara Trainer Smith wrote his book reviews. She saw Our Lady of Lujan in the bundle F(ather ) Brady sent her. Their eastern friends are under a cloud with the papers founded by the regretted (Patrick V.) Hickey and the gradual descent of the Catholic World. Sister cannot approve of bringing out girls to speak in public. Bishop ( ) Whittingham told her once that he would remove a daughter or a ward from school if she were named in a newspaper. Archbishop (James F.) Wood said thirty years ago he would accept an invitation to preside at a ceremony of bestowal of awards provided no young lady addressed him without a paper in her hand.

(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund: Buenos Aires, (Argentina)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hill sent Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.) three sonnets to be forwarded to Hudson. He is going to write to one of the General Consultors in Rome to see if he can be dispensed from sending his contributions to Chile first. When Father Thomas Stefanini was provincial in the United States, he did not require Hill to submit for his approval, what he wrote for the Ave Maria. However, Stone is fidgety as to what might be said at Rome. The latest news from Chile is that the foundation is a success. Stone has recovered from the effects of the kick. Hill has told Father Constantine that he will get "Short Cut" cheaper direct from Hudson. Revolution broke out in the city last evening. The majority of the troops in the city have gone over to the Union Circa against the present government. They hope the revolution will succeed quickly for the government must be changed. No news has reached them and very few attended Mass. Wednesday, July 30; Hill has just finished the short story for the Youth Department entitled "What Our Lady of Lourdes Did for Little Rufina" Coffin. She was an American child, who recently died in La Plata. Sunday, August 3; The revolution did come to a sudden end. The commanding general could have captured the Government House after the first victory, and then all could have accepted the Revolution. It is said the President will resign. The letter will go August 6.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Quincy, Mass(achusetts)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard would like to retain unchanged the Lepers of Molokai to the point where Father Damien is introduced. In telling the story of Damien's life his letters from the islands may be quoted. The account of his death may be reported or reprinted from the account by the priest. The whole might conclude with a sketch of Brother (Ira B.) Joseph Dutton. What is Stoddard were to dedicate the book to Kalakua the king who was friendly with Damien? Tomorrow Stoddard will begin "The Legend of Lanai".

(18)90 Aug. 6
Zorn, Father P. S.: Big Rapids, Mich(igan)
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

He is just an Indian missionary, persecuted for the last seven years, but he still follows closely the work of the Church, and especially all useful and needed publications. He read the review of Brownson's "The Religion of Ancient Craft Masonry" by J. B. Mueller of the German "Voice of Truth". He can only afford to send $1. for distribution of the pamphlet, but will say Masses for more copies of the pamphlet. He praises (Orestes A. Brownson) who so heroically distinguished himself laboring for the propagation of true doctrines. Between 1870-77 he used most of his $300 to $400 yearly salary helping poor people and buying Catholic papers, pamphlets and books to help in the conversion of the world. But he was merely persecuted, as is seen in Mystics. He labored in the Ottawa Indian language until he had composed words to translate any verse of the New Testament into Indian. He wanted to correct editions of the so-called Catholic Indian books which contain horrible, bad and very innocent expressions. Bishop (Frederick) Baraga furnished most of the epistles and gospels, some meditations, prayers and hymns in Indian, but he missed many words needed to express abstract ideas, and some un-Catholic Expressions as found in Protestant Indian testaments crept in. He explained this to Father C(amilius)P. Maes but received severe blows, quasi per Ecclesiam. If only the now Bishop Maes would take his case to Rome, justice would be done. He is persecuted and a horrible expression against the Immaculate Virgin remains in the so-called Catholic Indian books. Indians say he alone knows enough about the language to correct the books. The word speaks of the Virgin as "double-faced." Wily Satan has blinded Catholics and driven them to rash acts against Father Zorn, thus the error remains. The Rev. N. L. Sifferath knows too little theology and Indian to correct the blunders. Repeatedly in 1883 he told Rev. G( ) Graf that the Church does not need crooked ways, when his treatment appeared very crooked to him. As Rev. E(rnest) Van Dyke is a near relative of Brownson, he presumes Brownson knows about priests, and what it means to be singled out and run down as not one in 2000 experiences. May God direct Brownson to convince the Americans, and convert them.

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Hudson delayed his answer to Brownson's last letter, hoping to be able to go to Detroit this week, but because of a shortage of priests at Notre Dame he cannot. Tarducci's work ought to be the more acceptable for not being in the florid style; if it was, discriminating readers would be apt to think him a rhetorician rather than a historian and question the truth of his statements. (James F.) Edwards is back and was speaking of the photographs last night. Hudson would be glad to print as corners now and then extracts from Brownson's father's (Orestes A. Brownson writings, the shorter the better. Three to eight corners are needed constantly. He writes in haste, with 3 or 4 hours of confessions to hear and asks to have his regrets expressed to Father (Ernest Van Dyke).

Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

The book printed by the Blind is safe here; he forgot to put it in the bundle. There are queer things in it as though it were made up from the Bishop's conversation. He asks for photographs of Bishops Kelly, Rese and Conwell. It is strange that the papers of a man like Bishop (John DuBois (of New York) have not been preserved. Shea's boyish recollections of the Bishop are vivid; his harsh father's opposition to the bishop ranged Shea on the Bishop's side. Shea almost spontaneously took the opposite side to his father. They are conscrating the great Benedictine church in Newark tomorrow.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Crowley was pleased that Hudson liked the sketch of the Fresh Air Children. She may send Hudson a note telling the result of her experience with the children. It is rather late in the year for the project to take hold. The enthusiasm there has been surprising.

Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister E(lizabeth): (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mother (Mary G.) Edwards thanks Hudson for his prayers. Smith's article on a "Child of Mary's Progress" was lovely. The Sisters decided Mrs. ( ) Hough was the model Christian. Sister criticizes the manner in which women approach the Holy Table. Charles Warren Stoddard's visit bids fair to be interesting. Bishop (John Lancaster) Spalding will be in his own element arranging school affairs. Sister fancies they will not invite her order to contribute.

Howard, I.I.: Blackheath, England
to Monsignor (Robert Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

The Seton genealogy contains much of interest to Howard. If Seton uses an armorial bookplate Howard would be greatly obliged for a copy to add to his collections. Has an impression been taken of the arms from the lid of the snuff box now belonging to William Seton of New York? Howard has copies of many coats armorial taken from old silver plate.

Mannix, Mary E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix sends a few "Corners" and a translation from the German. She will translate the sketch of Agostino from "Der Katholik". If Hudson does not use it Father ( ) Luebbermann will. Their minds are exercised about John (Mannix). His uncle expects to be transferred and that would leave the alternative of Georgetown. (John B.) Mannix has the idea of sending him to a commerce college there and taking him into the office where he could do typewriting and earn something for himself. There is a school kept by the Lazarist Brothers in Los Angeles but Mannix does not think much of it. John has no companions but Fred. The death of John Boyle O'Reilly has been a source of regret. They have heard no particulars save the deed of an overdose of chlorol. Years ago Mannix wrote some stories for "The Young Crusader", published in Boston under the editorship of (Father) William Byrne. The latter asked her to send some contributions to the Boston Pilot. O'Reilly paid her well and promptly. Mannix admired his sincerity and his attitude on the Irish question. Mannix's husband who was more intimately associated with O'Reilly through his friend P.A. Collins, shared her admiration. When their troubles came, O'Reilly wrote a letter bidding them to take courage. Mannix once wrote to him asking him to lecture for the benefit of the Working Girl's Home. After they were (in California) they heard of his having lectured for the Parnell Branch in Cincinnati. Mr. ( ) Valentine used to call Mannix his safety-valve, perhaps Hudson is hers. Mannix sees that John Acton has published a volume of verse.

Seton, W(illiam): Paris, (France)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton): (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

Sally and he were glad to receive Robert's letters of August 6 and July 17. Yesterday W(illiam) met Monsignor (George H.) Doane in the rue de Rivoli. Doane went to England today. W(illiam) was sorry to hear from Doane of the death of May Bayley's husband, Mr. Fox. W(illiam) remembers the summer day in 1857 when Carleton (Bayley) married her mother, Miss Murray. W(illiam) fears Annie (Foster Seton) is wanting in good sense; she has not known how to treat Jack (John Foster Seton). He has a talent for mechanics and will do better in mechanics than at Latin or Greek. W(illiam) was sorry to learn of the death of Father George McCloskey. W(illiam) remembers the day his mother took him to St. John's College and left him in McCloskey's charge. Liz (Elizabeth Seton) and Harry (Seton) are most unwise not to be willing to sell Cragdon for the offer of last March. They met Mrs. Navarro here some weeks ago. Her brother, Mr. Dyckers, left her $50,000. Totie and his bride were there to call. A letter from Sands says he is having a good time at Gloucester. W(illiam) hears nothing of Berrian. W(illiam) will write to the president of the "Mt." to thank him for the degree.

Sterling, Geo(rge) A.: Sag Harbor, N(ew) J(ersey)
to F(athe)r (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sterling fears he may have raised Hudson's expectations too high regarding the correspondence which he encloses. The letter of (James) Cardinal Gibbons will explain itself. That of (Henry) Cardinal Manning breathes out his saintly character in every line. Sterling's daughter, Isabelle (Sterling) was at the convent school in Sag Harbor when she wrote to the Cardinal. She told him her Papa was a convert and that of her three brothers at St. Charles College, one was Cardinal Gibbons' boy whom he was going to educate for the priesthood. Probably there will be scant information for (Charles Warren) Stoddard to work upon, but Sterling hopes that Hudson will make the correspondence as interesting as possible.

(Edes, Ella B.): Rome, (Italy)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The portraits of Cardinals Capalti, Franchi and Simeoni are pronounced excellent. She had the banker, Mr. Handley, attend to forwarding them to America. She is sorry to hear of the death of Madame Gregori. She is sending Father (Daniel E.) Hudson the "Mustere du Sang" over which there was so much talk relative to the letter of the Pole and in which Cardinal Manning took his part. She cannot understand all this sickly sentimentality over the wrongs of the Jews. P. S. Archbishop Corrigan had painted by M. De Rhoden, the original artist, a copy of St. Veronica. It is for the new parish church of St. Veronica in New York. She succeeded in getting it touched to the real "Volto Santo" of the Vatican.

Onahan, W(illiam) J.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to Archbishop (John) Ireland: (St. Paul, Minnesota)

Onahan was extremely disturbed by Ireland's suggestion of distrust at the outcome of the proposed (Columbian Catholic) Congress. Ireland's decision will govern and control him; if Ireland withdrew his support the congress would fail. He discusses the grounds for the distrust; the congress must not be a mass meeting. He assumes that each representative, priest or layman, would be accredited by his ordinary. The present committees are pro tem; the permanent committees should include bishops and priests, besides laymen. He gives a blue print of the mechanics of the congress. The American Catholic Congress was a happy event; it exercised a profound moral influence on the country. If Ireland will lead the front of the battle, Onahan will follow; if Ireland withdraws, Onahan will give up the project. (In Group VI folder; a corrected first draft.)

The Catholic Truth Society has been in existence only six months and they have already 200 members. Their aim is to give Protestants the truth in as gentle a way as possible. They hope to furnish jails with reading matter in the fall. Copley asks Hudson if he can say a good word for their work in his magazine. Seton, Mary Stuart: Abernethy, (Scotland)
to Monsignor (Robert) Seton: (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

His letter of May 9 is on her desk; she hopes this letter reaches him on the 28th and wishes him happiness and health. She often thinks of their pleasant meeting. Her father (George Marshall Seton?) continued much in the same depressed state he was in when Robert saw him till the beginning of this year when Mary and her brother decided to send him to the south of England. He began to improve from the time he played golf at St. Ives. Mary went to London as her sister's sister-in-law died. Her father joined her there in June quite a different man. They may not be very long in Edinburgh as their "tie" has been broken and they are probably to sell St. Bennet's and eventually settle in London. Mary thanks Robert for "Seton of Parbroath." She does not know if her father has sent the information as he is in Fifeshire at present but will find out. Minnie Wilkins is very well; her sister was married May 1 and has gone to America; her husband has a post in the Cathedral at Grahamstower. They met the Miss Coventrys and found them very pleasant. Mary's brother is going to Russia and Berlin; curious that he should visit there before their father who was so anxious to go.

He had just finished writing Brownson when the extracts arrived. Before Brownson goes to any further trouble, Hudson wishes to explain his plan to give appetizing extracts from the work under some such general title as "Episodes in the Life of Columbus" or "Leaves from a New Life". If the extractions are not interesting and fresh and served up in a way to attract readers, they would not serve Hudson's purposes and would defeat Brownson's. They must give the best wine first. Brownson's idea about binding is capital.

The proofs of the sketches are in print. Nothing can have been more tiresome than Burns and Oates all through the affair. O'Meara has given it to Father ( ) Wolesley, O.P., who is working hard for the beatification of the Cure' d' Ars. Wolesley is giving the sketch to the Catholic Faith Society. O'Meara will send Hudson a copy of the other sketches when they appear with the Cardinal's (Henry Edward Manning) preface. She saw His Eminence the other day and he looked well and cheerful. O'Meara asks Hudson if he has read Manning's words at the Oratory at the service for (John Henry) Cardinal Newman. Manning said it was a magnificent function.
