1891 Jan. 1
M(annix), M(ary) E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix has received congratulations on her "Fifty Golden Sheaves." She was disappointed to find that her article was not in the January number of the "Catholic World." "The Coming Day" by W(illiam) D. Kelly is the best thing she has yet seen from his pen. John Boyle O'Reilly's heart would have bled for Ireland now. Years ago in Cincinnati one of (Charles Stuart) Parnell's adherents said that even then his double life was no secret to his followers. They have had no news of Mr. V(alentine) for some time.

1891 Jan. 1
Munson, Jo(h)n W.: St. Louis, (Missouri)
to Austin E. Ford: N(ew) Y(ork, New York)

Ford asks for his own satisfaction what Munson's idea of a fair bargain would be; he will give it to keep the question of the purchase of the New York Freeman's Journal open. Munson gives a long account of his investigation of the paper in New York, its financial condition, and the changes he would make. The price Ford gave to (John A.) McMaster is Munson's offer. The recent death of Michael Phelan, the real owner and manager of the (Western) Watchman has left a vacancy there which some young man could fill, leaving Father (Daniel S.) Phelan as editor.

Ware, G. A.: San Francisco, (California)
to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

About a month ago Ware sent Brownson a copy of an article he published in the Golden State Catholic and hopes Brownson found nothing in it derogatory to his father's (Orestes A. Brownson)fame. He was unable to get it published in the Overland Monthly, which insisted that Dr. Brownson was not a "local character", to which Ware replied that he was a national character. He had difficulties in getting his manuscript back.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

1891 Jan. 2
Hechinger, A.: Lockport, N(ew) Y(ork)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Hechinger thanks Brownson for his letter of December 22 but asks whether what he heard about the year 1558 might be true and if Brownson is certain of it. It was repeated so often in plain terms by people whose veracity can scarcely be called in question. He asks whether (Orestes A. Brownson) had already at that time the physician's advice to eat meat on Fridays and whether a character as he was represented did not, at least for some time, consider such regulations of the Church important. If as to the other point it is to be found in Volume 20, he asks whether Brownson has left it unchanged. He supposes Brownson has nothing to do with the sale of the books and will apply to the Catholic Publishing Society, where he hopes he will discover in what volume "The Convert" appeared.

1891 Jan. 3
Dechant, W.S.: Lebanon, O(hio)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He sends some Mound Builder relics from his father's farm in Warren County, Ohio. The Mound is one of the series down to the Miami river and is one of the outlying signal stations to the Great Fort called Fort Ancient. The lead balls are from the battle field of Chicamauga. The large ball he picked up from the breast works occupied by General Grant outside of Chattanooga. The sliver of wood is cut from a tree on Mission Ridge that was used as a signal tree by Gen Bragg and the nail was used to fasten his flag to the tree.

1891 Jan. 4
O'Reilly, Mary A.: St. Louis, (Missouri)
to (Austin E.) Ford: (New York, New York)

She was greatly mortified at finding that she had not answered Ford's letter of Dec. 19. The excitement and flurry attending Christmas was the reason for her failure to answer. They were all sorry to hear of his wife's illness and trust that she is on the road to complete recovery. P.S. The Dr. (O'Reilly) wishes to be most kindly remembered.

Richards thanks Hudson for the copy of "The Disappearance of Mr. Longworthy." He sent notices to the Catholic Review, the Sacred Heart Review and Donahoe's Magazine. He will be disappointed if Father (J. Talbot) Smith does not print it. Does it not seem that Smith lacks true, Catholic balance? Richards hopes he will not run the Review into the ground. He feels sympathy for Patrick V(alentine) Hickey's family.

Kilner, H.L. and Co(mpany) Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

They think a book of the size Hudson mentions would suit them well. Does he think 250 copies bound would be correct? They intend to get out "Carmela" about the size of "Philip's Restitution". They shall be glad to have Hudson's candid opinion.

1891 Jan. 6
(Stone), C.P. Father Fidelis: Buenos Aires, (Argentina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's letter and enclosure was sent to Buenos Aires while Stone was at the Pacific Coast. When he returned he asked Father Edmund (Hill), (C.P.) to acknowledge it. In Chile they seem to be on the verge of a revolution. The trouble comes from the ambition and obstinancy of President (Jose Manuel) Balmaceda. It is the Argentine Republic which seems to be in a hopeless muddle. The sheep and cattle are dying by thousands. Their large church in Buenos Aires is steadily going up. At Vina del Mar in Chile their foundation is progressing triumphantly. When the Transandine Railway is finished it will be easy enough to cross from side to side of the continent, but at present the journey is a formidable one. Money collected in the United States is being spent at Vina Del Mar. U.S. money is at a splendid premium there. They get the Ave Maria regularly. There are only eleven priests there, and vocations to the religious life are almost unknown there. Father Edmund is in Buenos Aires.

1891 Jan. 7
Munson, J(ohn) W.: St. Louis, (Missouri)
to A(ustin) E. Ford: New York, (New York)

Munson saw a shade of resentment in Ford's letter of the 5th. He hopes he is mistaken for he wanted to be honest and frank. Ford's attachment to his paper is a natural one but Munson says that if he were to own it he would endeavor to build it up as a business enterprise. Though he would like to make of it an influential religious journal, he would be actuated more by the business motive. Only when he could put its circulation at 100,000, get one dollar a line for advertisements, and later in life have his sons as business associates, would he beging to look at the real good he could do with it from a religious standpoint. He has bought a piece of real estate for $2500 cash which he has sold for $10,000 cash. The buyer proposes to resell at 100% profit. A Denver crowd of capitalists are pushing things over in E(ast) St. Louis and Munson's sale is a result of their advertising. He will always be glad to hear from Ford and asks for a copy of the Freeman's Journal which has Craft's letter. A bright newspaper man remarked that the Fords would sell ten thousand copies of the paper with that letter. Munson asks for a year's subscription.

Will is rushed with work and can't stand it much longer. He wishes he took Brother Marcellinus' advice for keeping books is hard work. They have been married a year and never had a cross work.

He is at St. John's College and likes it very much. The buildings are not as fine as those at Notre Dame and he has nobody to take as much interest in him as Edwards did. (Huffer), Estelle: Paris, (France)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

How can she ever thank Edwards for the present of Miss Dorsey's works to their children? Edwards cannot imagine what consolation it is to know that he will visit Ma's (Mrs. Catherine Dunbar) grave. If she could care for the grave herself she would not fell the void so much. Yesterday the Seine was frozen over which created great astonishment. She has been confined to the house with a cold.

The first number of the South African Catholic Magazinehas just appeared; it is edited by Father Kolbe. They have two political parties, the Responsibles and the Antis. McHugh, Father R(ichard) J.: Burlington, Vermont
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Would there be room for McHugh in the Ave Maria? He wishes to begin a subscription to the Ave Maria and have a copy sent to his sister, Annie McHugh of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He asks Hudson not to renew the Sister Josephine of Manchester subscription on his account.

Cooney, C.S.C., Father P(eter) P(aul): Toledo, O(hio)
to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Cooney is detained here on business connected with his book and will not reach Notre Dame until Thursday. He returns the book Brownson sent him and will send for a copy, although there is not much in it that is in his line. He hopes Brownson has not forgotten to write out his war experiences. All he wants is what Brownson can recollect—incidents, anecdotes, etc. If he keeps the order of time and place, he can recall many things that would be interesting and instructive, and what he knows about chaplains and their efficiency in the army would be in the general tenor of Cooney's work: the encouragement that the presence of Catholic chaplains gives to Catholic soldiers on the field of Battle. He asks Brownson to jot these things down as they happen to come into his mind and to put them together in a connected form at his leisure. Cooney will be at Notre Dame now continually, working to put together what he has written.

Crawford, Virginia M.: (London, England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Crawford will have no difficulty in writing what Hudson wants. Translating the book has made her familiar with the life of Blessed Chanel. She encloses a portrait published in the French life. Her journey to the States has had to be given up.

O'Brien, Father Frank A.: Kalamazoo, Mich(igan)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is about compiling a life of Bishop (Caspar H.) Borgess (of Detroit) and it occurred to him that a few of the older priest who knew him well might have some interesting incidents to relate. He would appreciate an item of interest. (An added note signed by Hudson and addressed to Edwards): Edwards might have material for O'Brien.

Griffin, Martin I. J.: Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

By the Scholastic he notes that Edwards has received manuscripts bearing on the early history of the Spanish Missions in the south. Griffin will pay to have someone translate them for him. What's the use of them if not put to service. He had a visit from Pro. (Maurice F.) Egan and advises Edwards to keep Egan away from the good people of the university until the contamination wears off.

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Hudson was glad to see the first volume of Tarducci and is prepared to give a good notice. There was an enquiry for an English Life of Columbus in the initial number of the Caxton Review and Hudson sent a reply at once referring to Brownson's translation. He thanks Brownson for the compliment he was kind enough to repeat. It is really encouraging to have any one say that the Ave Maria is doing good. Brownson will be pleased to hear that their edition has gone up to 22,000.

Osouf, Bishop P(ierre) M(arie): Tokyo, Japan
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Osouf thanks Hudson for his help. Hudson made Father (G ) Testevuide very happy. Osouf forgot to send the letter of (Hugh F.) Gillon of Lowell. Father Berger has died of influenza. They need to save the workers of the mission. Osouf has acknowledged receipt of the draft to Eugene Kelly and Company, but he has not written directly to Brother Edward.

 Enclosure:

Testevuide, Father G: Yokahama, Japan
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Testevuide has several times thought of thanking Hudson for his interest in the leprosy work. Today (Bishop Pierre Marie) Osouf permitted him to attach his letter to the one he proposes to write. They have expanded their hospital considerably. Testevuide is going to print a little account of his work, a sample of which he will offer Hudson.

Wood, S(amuel) F.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It is a matter of regret that Paul (Wood) does not take an interest in music and singing. If he could be induced to join the choir, he would develop into a fine singer. Possibly a word of encouragement from Edwards would be sufficient to arouse Paul's ambition.

M(annix), M(ary) E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The Assistant Editor of the Catholic World has informed Mannix that her article on the Golden Jubilee is at her disposal on receipt of stamps. She was put out that he did not return the manuscript at once, for she would have sent it to Hudson. The sisters have written and asked for the article. Sister Leocadie writes that by the time they were ready to publish it, it was "old shoes." She is a Boston woman and a connection of John Boyle O'Reilly. What would it cost to have fifty or a hundred copies printed in pamphlet form? She thought of sending her Christmas gift from Mr. Valentine as a model for the Golden Jubilee pamphlet.

Seton, W(illiam): Paris, (France)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton: Jersey City, New Jersey)

W(illiam) and Sally arrived in Paris a fortnight ago, and the weather has been cold. They dined the other night at Fred Palmer'sNina Prime's uncle, a pleasant old bachelor of 73. Two days ago they visited Pere (Auguste) Leroy, a learned scientist who fills a great want in the church. He is sorry that Robert did not have a pleasanter time at Doctor (Thomas) Lee's. He did not always like the Irish. The Irish are not a self governing people and their influence in American politics has not been elevating. W(illiam)'s ideal of a country would have been the United States fifty years ago. Doctor (Orestes) Brownson thought so too. (P.S.) Yes, (Louis) Sands is a capital fellow.

Gilder, R. W.: New York, (New York)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

They did not mean to wound the feelings of Catholics in publishing "Sister Dolorosa". They have sent one or two criticisms to Mr. Allen. The record of The Century is a good one with regard to Catholics. Unless literature is to be placed under a censor and lose its freedom, it will always be wounding someone.

Rademacher, Bishop Joseph: Nashville, Tenn(essee)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He does not know whether he should address Edwards for some water of Lourdes, but he knows Edwards' obliging disposition and that he will have the matter attended to even if it is not in his line of duties. He supposes Father (Alexis) Granger (C.S.C.) is too feeble to trouble himself about such matters.

Starr has just received a picture of Madame (Pauline) Craven from the Countess D' Azy(?)which Hudson must see.

to (Geraldine M.) O'Meara: Paris, (France)

They regret any omissions made. The facts and material were placed in the hands of his Eminence, (Henry Edward Cardinal Manning).

Tiernan is glad "Carmela" pleased Hudson. She thinks that $400 would not be too much to ask for "Carmela's" appearance in the Ave Maria. If the price is agreeable to Hudson $150 is due her. Miss (C ) Fisher's story is two-thirds done and she will send it to Hudson.
