Clarke, Anna M.: Oxford, (England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Clarke is a sister of Father (Richard F.) Clarke, S.J. She was delighted to lend the sheets of her Life of St. Francis di Geronimo to Ellis Schreiber in order that he might find in them something for the Ave Maria. Father Clarke is now at Treves. He sent material for an article the first part of which Clarke will post in a few days. Clarke sends Hudson some pictures she received from Treves.

Kolbe thanks Hudson for the Ave Maria. Their numbers there are very few and their venture, the South African Catholic Magazine, lives from hand to mouth. He sends an article called forth by the account of the Abbey of Louarre. He asks that a copy of the article be sent to Emily du Gard Makepeace; if published.

She thanks Ford for the beautiful tribute he so kindly paid to the memory of her step-brother, Hugh P. McElrone. She had only seen him twice in the last twenty years, and consequently appreciated what Ford said; McElrone did not waste the talents God lavished on him; nor allow the spirit of the age to contaminate his writings.

Kelly makes the following suggestions on the Catholic Congress of 1893: The delegates should be limited in number, and leaders of thought should be chosen; foreign citizens should not be admitted to the Congress; the Public school question should hear the voices of special delegates of "our separated brethren." Kelly will be unable to attend the Committee's meetings.

1891 Sept. 5
Guichainville, le Metayer de: New York, N.Y.
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Guichainville informs Brownson that a M. Ponce de Leon has shown him a lithographic facsimile of the autograph. He mentions that this signature was found under a work having for title: "Codice Diplomatico Columbo Americano" (Second Edition, published in January 1857). Another one was published in 1867 in Havana illustrated on page 291. Also, that a Samuel Barlow informed Guichainville that these two facsimiles were executed by a man named La Croix, sometimes called "Enrico Croce". Guichainville does not know whether facsimiles of Columbus' letters were made but he can not reconcile the fact that no authorization was given for their production. He is not satisfied with the person recommended by (W. E.) Curtis. However, Guichainville promises him to write to Curtis asking him what day he will arrive in New York. In reference to the "History of Columbus" Guichainville suggests that it may be a continuation of the work of Samuel Barlow. Nevertheless, he counsels Brownson to wait and see. He closes assuring Brownson of his most devoted sentiments.

Seton, W(illiam): Paris, (France)
to (Monsignor) Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

He received Robert's letter of August 24. The Home Journal with Robert's account of the heirlooms was very interesting. The Freeman('s Journal) has degenerated into a purely Irish paper. Catholic papers and publications generally are not up to the mark. He regrets that he did not turn to Science long years ago. The new (Catholic) University in Washington is doing nothing for natural science: it will likely remain a huge theological school for fifty years to come. It was good of Robert to send Nell money. (E)Liz(abeth Seton) visited Munich and met Doctor (Joseph) Bach who came from the Tyrol to see her. Isabel (Seton Jevons) and family are still at St. Moritz. Sally (Seton) speaks of visiting Tours to see her friend (Mary) DeLafontaine. W(illiam) met (Rene de) Lespinasse who has nervous exhaustion. His wife is there too. Lespinasse has fallen out with Mr. Navarro.

Katzer, Archbishop Fr(ederick) X(avier): Milwaukee, (Wisconsin)
 to Archbishop M(ichael) A(ugustine) Corrigan: New York, N(ew) Y(ork)

The Bishops of the Milwaukee Province have petitioned the Holy See for erection of a new Diocese in Wisconsin. They intend to propose as dignissimus a priest of Irish descent, but from outside the Province and not of the liberal tendency of Archbishop (John) Ireland, whose neighbor he will be. Katzer has mentioned the name of Father H(enry) A. Brann, of New York, to Bishop (John) Vertin to be put down as dignissimus, if Corrigan can recommend him. Katzer asks Corrigan to mark his answer private.

(Gallagher), Sister (Mary) Antonia.Mercedes: Beatty, Penn(sylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister Hilda (Gallagher) has been in delicate health the past year. To tell Hudson how delightful the summer at Point Pleasant was would be impossible. Does Hudson know two Pittsburgh sisters were at Notre Dame last summer? They were at Torresdale at Mother Katherine's (Drexel) convent. She is in her father's old villa with twenty-six novices and postulants. She is building a convent at Andalusia. They just missed Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.), who was visiting the Smiths and will carry off Father Maurice Smith, C.P., to South America. They went to Long Branch to visit her invalid cousin, Mrs. A(nthony) J(oseph) Drexel. Her husband (Anthony Joseph) Drexel and Geo(rge) W. Childs drove them around the West End. They were at Manhattanville, N(ew) Y(ork) and found the Superior, M(a)d(a)me Frances Elder to be an old classmate of hers. Father (James A.) Doonan, S.J., was giving the Retreat and Father Francis McCarthy, S.J., was their chaperon. Sister had a long chat with Sister (Elizabeth) Ten Broeck, (R.S.H.) at Eden Hall.

1891 Sept. 9
Guichainville, le Metayer de: New York, N. Y.
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Guichainville informs Brownson of a letter he received from W. E. Curtis. He remarks that it was a singular coincidence that the person whom Curtis mentioned was the same one who four years ago read him an incomplete text. He mentions that the text was translated from the Italian and that he understood it is completely this time in Brownson's work "Life of Columbus". This same person has informed Guichainville that the signature was made by a forger. He points out that the would-be expert intentionally forgot that Columbus wrote two similar letters. Also, that this selfstyled expert was waiting for the document to fall in his hands without any sacrifices or expense on his part. Curtis is going to have a hard time disentangling himself when he (Curtis) finds out that Guichainville knows of his hypocrisy. He ends the letter with the hope of good news and sincere attachement. P.S. Jealousy and her companion Envy are to be found everywhere.

He asks Brownson to convey his compliments and regrets.

Kelly, Marie H.: Paris, (France)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Kelly was not disappointed with Hudson's photograph. Lately Father (Joseph Marie) Lagrange, O.P., the new prior of the Dominican convent in Jerusalem, came to see her during a visit to Paris, and she told him the Ave Maria sometimes spoke of St. Stephen's Convent. Kelly sends an anecdote on the ex P(ere) Hyacinthe, Charles Jean Marie Layson.

Guichainville, le Metayer de: New York, N. Y.
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Guichainville encloses a copy of William E. Curtis' letter to Brownson. Guichainville is not convinced about Curtis as yet. He does not accept the authority of Ponce de Leon. He tells Brownson to read attentively the article that he attached on Brownson's work by Tarducci. He suggests waiting for another life of Columbus, perhaps by a Cuban. P.S. He has obtained the copyright under his own name and in three languages and that it cannot be reproduced without his authorization. Also, that due to an excellent contract made with his partner, the autograph is Guichainville's individual property.

(Stone), C.P., Father Fidelis: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to (FatherDaniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stone has been skipping about in a bewildering manner. He has received various letters with sensational intelligence from Rome and South America. He sends some verses of Father Edmund (Hill, C.P.). Hill is innocent but he confides too much in the public. Lately he wrote asking to be recalled from S(outh) America, and a few days later he wrote another letter withdrawing the first. The Argentine mission has recently been transferred to the jurisdiction of the North American Province. It is possible that Stone may not remain long in South America. He expects to sail for B(ueno)s Aires in a month, going via Rome. Hudson might mention in his memento of the dead Fathers John Philip Baudenelli and Gaudentius Rossi who died August 11 and 12.

Shipley, Orby: Lyme Regis, (England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Some weeks ago Shipley enclosed in a letter to Hudson one to W(illiam) D. Kelly and one to M(aurice) F(rancis) Egan. He has had no reply to any of the three. As he has begun active work on the matter of the Anthology, he ventures to trouble Hudson again. In his letters to Kelly and Egan Shipley begged to confirm the permission which Hudson afforded him of using their verses in his collection. The enclosures he sends will be distributed to the clergy in England and amongst Protestants. Does Hudson think the list worthy of being printed in the Ave Maria? Shipley has some verse he would be willing to send for the Ave Maria.

Straniero has no training for journalistic work but in some respect he was successful. He suffers from the loss of that monthly income. He hopes to obtain from his superiors permission to do that work with greater efficacy. He hopes Edwards may arrange this business for him.

She writes at the request of the artist Signor Carnevali to tell that the five portraits ordered for Memorial Hall are ready. They are: Cardinal Leonardo Antonelli, Prefect of the Propaganda, Mgr. Bedini, Mgr. Jacobini, Mgr. Persico, and Mgr. O'Connell. She added a sixth, that of Mgr. Hostlot. Persico was as disagreeable as possible about the portrait. He is very ill-mannered. She sees by the papers that Father Sorin has returned to America. What a wonderful man he is ! She doesn't know where the fathers (of the Congregation of the Holy Cross) have moved to since quitting St. Bridget. She has not forgotten the relic of Blessed Rita di Cascia that Father Hudson asked for.

Ogden, Henry: New York, (New York)
to Monsignor Robert Seton: Jersey City Heights, (New Jersey)

He read with delight an account in the Tribune of Seton's sermon against the "rum power." It would be a magnificent spectacle if all Catholic priests would begin a crusade against the rum power in every State of the Union. The priest at Ogden is with Seton in spirit. Ogden had a party in yesterday who wanted a refusal of Cragdon at $100,000 for six weeks. It would not do to five one for less than $2,000. He has a letter from Isabel (Seton Jevons) in which she said they would be home September 25. He has not heard from Lizzie (Elizabeth Seton).

O'Brien, Morgan J.: New York, (New York)
to W(illia)m J. Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

O'Brien has received the "Columbian" and hopes that the news as to the meeting of the whole committee in N(ew) Y(ork) next month is true. Should the sub-committee "on Papers" meet before the general committee? O'Brien has just returned to the city, and will immediately send out notices for the meeting of the sub-committee, if Onahan approves. The committee on "Subjects" consits of Bishops Maes, Foley, Farrelly and Keiley. The late John Boyle O'Reilly has not been replaced on the committee. O'Brien did not feel authorized to write Archbishop Williams to ask him to name M. G. Donahue, but names Onahan, to secure his services at the preliminary meeting. He wonders whether Bishops Maes and Foley can attend both meetings of the General and the sub-committees. The meetings could be held within a few days of each other, but until the committee on organization meets the committee on subjects can do little. Onahan is chairman of the organization committee and Archbishop Ireland, O'Brien, Dormer, and Spaunhorst are members. The date, method of organization, and Call for the Congress were referred to this committee. Some one should communicate with Gov. Carroll to secure his attendance. Onahan's sub-committee is to fix dates for meetings of committees in New York. An early meetings is necessary since it has been suggested that the Congress be held in 1892, and there is no time to be lost. Onahan is asked to give his views after hearing from Western members.

Onahan, W(illiam) J(ames): Chicago, (Illinois)
 to M(ichael) W. O'Brien: Detroit, (Michigan)

Onahan incloses a copy of a letter from Judge (Morgan J.) O'Brien, acting chairman of the committee, on Catholic Congress. This brought up several questions on which M. W. O'Brien's opinion is desired, which Onahan lists. Onahan had supposed that the Congress would be held in 1893. (Note: A copy of Judge O'Brien's letter also sent to other members of committee.)

Kelly, William Louis: St. Paul, (Minnesota)
 to W(illiam) J. Onahan: Chicago, Ill(inoi)s

As the general term of their court convenes Oct. 5th and continues until July, Kelly's opportunities to go to Chicago are limited. He may be able to get off for a day after Oct. 5. He fully agreed with (the Bishop) as to the lines which will be pursued at the next Congress. If the school question and "Kindred debatable questions" are to be left out, Kelly will be pleased. He will vote to discuss social questions, which is a wide field, and not so dangerous.

She received Robert's letter in Switzerland but deferred writing until she had seen Wil(liam) Seton and Sally (Seton). She has never seen Sally looking better and hopes that their prayers have been heard and her cure assured. Mrs. (Jonathan) Edwards received word that Uncle John Jay was thrown from his carriage and there is little likelihood of his recovery. Nina Prime is back in Huntington. The Jevons (Isabel Seton Jevons) sailed on Saturday. Elizabeth has a little over two weeks more of this life before returning. Mary and Laura (Edwards) send their regards.

Seton, W(illiam): Paris, (France)
to (Monsignor) Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

He is glad Robert was present at the Marquis de Chambrun's funeral. He does not recall the officer, Gates, whose death notice Robert sent but thinks it was their first quartermaster; it is 30 years ago. W(illiam) will write today to (Henry) Ogden and tell him there must be no putting off the sale of Cragdon. (E)liz(abeth Seton) is now in Paris and is staying with Mrs. (Jonathan) Edwards. Sally, Liz, Miss Edwards, and W(illiam) went to the theatre last week. Liz sails on October 17. Sally and W(illiam) will return home in December and stay till April, then back to Europe to escape the summer heat. The C(atholic) W(orld) is not so dignified in its new yellow cover. It is a pity that the magazine is not on a firm basis. He read that the Jesuits were to start a Review in New York. The great need of the age is well-trained Catholics in natural science.
