O'Reilly, Father Bernard: New York, (New York)
to (Patrick) Cunniam: (New York, New York)

As the Catholic Work(men's) Benevolent Union is preparing to celebrate the birthday of Pope Leo XIII, O'Reilly, his chosen historian and one of his household, joins with them in spirit. O'Reilly was in Rome during the long months, 1885-1886 when the Holy See was deliberating on the Labor Question in America. As he was called to Rome to write the life of Leo XIII, he had more than one occasion to plead the cause of the Laborer both in the Vatican itself and at the Propaganda with the late Cardinal (John) Simeoni. When the cause was won by Cardinal (James) Gibbons, O'Reilly wrote at Gibbon's behest more than one letter to the New York Sun explaining the action of the Holy See and advocating the just rights of the workingman. Within these last days O'Reilly has prepared for the press the concluding chapters of his "Life of Leo XIII" detailing therein the Pontiff's increasing efforts toward obtaining justice for the laboring classes and protection for the poor. He has analysed and explained for non-Catholic Americans the Pope's magnificent Encyclical on the Condition of Labor and related as well the services of Cardinal (H.E.) Manning and Gibbons. During his recent stay in France O'Reilly wrote further letters mostly occupied with the labor question as approached in France; the soul of the movement was and is Leo XIII, who cannot be praised too highly. O'Reilly has been an advocate during his long priestly life of Workingman's rights and dearest interests.

(18)92 Mar. 4
(Loft, William): Caracas, Venezuela
to Monsignor (Robert) Seton: (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

He left Curacao on March 1st and arrived at La Guayra on the 3rd. They took the steam cars across the Andes. Loft wishes Bob (Robert) Ingersoll were there; his arguments would be frozen solid on his lips. (Loft gives a description of Guayra.) Customs demanded $100 in gold as a bond to insure against Loft's disposing of his samples. These people could give tips to Bill (William) Tweed that would make his remains rattle in their coffin. The country is on the eve of a presidential election. The American minister told (Loft) they might expect a revolution at any moment. It will be dangerous for (Loft) to sign this letter. The former dictator, Guzman Blanco, now lives in Paris, having carried off $14 million out of the country. The New York war correspondent tells (Loft) that a German man of war will arrive in six days and an American ship in 10 days. General ( ) Crispi is recruiting in the back country for the regular army which numbers about 6,000 strong and will oppose the new president and the dictator. He hopes Seton will pray for him because he is in a delicate position.

Corrigan, Archbishop M(ichael) A(ugustine): New York, (New York)
to Austin E. Ford: (New York, New York)

(Tobias) Kirby, the Rt. Rev. Abbot Bernard Smith, and Rt. Rev. Bishop (Herbert) Vaughan. In this way the account of the recent Papal demonstration (of The Catholic Workmen's Benevolent Union) would reach the Holy Father, and the English speaking world abroad, and so do good.

Halkett, Emily M(ary) G(abrielle): (London, England)
to (Monsignor Robert Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

She thanks (Seton) for the letter, pictures and book. She is still inexperienced: she considers her life only began with her reception into the Church 3 years ago. Her director is Father Gordon Thompson, one of the holiest and most learned priests of the Archdiocese. Cardinal (Manning) thought a great deal of him. He was a young Anglican clergyman with a wife and 7 children when he became a Catholic. Miss Day and Halkett will live with some Franciscan sisters. Miss Day is an American; her scientist father lost his faith. Miss Lucas is still at St. Bartholomew's, she cannot decide to marry and leave it. (P.S.) Hugh (G. Halkett) is getting on well so far.

Pallen asks Brownson to examine the enclosed article to see if any of the quotations, purporting to come from Father (Isaac T.) Hecker, C.S.P., are really as Brownson spoke in his letter, to be credited to Dr. O(restes) A. Brownson. The article is from the same source as the last one, about which Brownson made the correction, and Pallen would not like to make the same mistake again. He thanks Brownson for his sympathy and encouragement on the educational question. They are in for a long fight, and every word tells, especially from genuine American sources. The Church Progress is at Brownson's service at any time.

Audran, Father E(rnest): Jeffersonville, Ind(iana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Whether the stirring up of their people is due to his pamphlet or not he does not know. People are always afraid. He thanks God that Judge Dunne has begun to speak; he is ahead also in his views of the school question. In the United States the people are the state. The whole question is resolved into help yourself and God will help you. This is Christian teaching. Soon as Catholics unite they will have the fullness of their rights in the matter of schools. Vote only for men who will represent Catholic claims in the halls of the legislation, for their share of public money for Catholic schools.

He owes further thanks for the sketch.
