Richemont, Viconte de: Paris, (France)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Richemont received the number of the Stimme der Wahrheit which Brownson sent him and has read the speech which Brownson delivered at the convention of the German Catholic Society of Michigan with great interest, since it answers several questions and agrees with several thoughts he had had on the matter. The question of whether common schools shall be religious or what is called neutral is coming to be the battlefield, in both the old and new worlds. But as Brownson says, "there is no marality without religion, and if religious morality is not taught in schools, the teaching must tend to inculcate a code of selfishness, avarice, and sensuality. This is unfortunately the aim of too many today, and neutrality very often conceals hostility. My people who might be leaders, both in France and America, do not seem to consider this question under this point of view, and wishing to remain moderate, are likely to become imprudent. Richemont is of the opinion that anything must be done to find a modus vivendi, but the neutral school which is offerred to Catholics is too often meant to be a modus occidendi. Such is the fact in France, where free-masons have great influence; Brownson knows the situation in America. Richemont asks about the Faribault-Stillwater schools: so much has been talked and written on the matter that he does not clearly understand the present state of things. The statistics which Brownson mentions about the state of the Church are really frightening. It is true that many of the immigrants who come from the old Catholic countries are Catholic only by name and easily forget that name in struggling for life; as, on the reverse, those who call themselves Catholics in America are truly and firmly such. Nevertheless the losses seem very great. As for French Catholics, they are at present laboring under terrible difficulties, both religious and political. Democracy does not mean what it does in America, as Brownson well noticed; and efforts to tame her will be useless if not dangerous. Richemont thanks Brownson for his kindness and his remembrance of his pleasant visit in Detroit and hopes that since they agree on many subjects, they may be able to talk about them on his side of the ocean. His father, who used the paper Brownson sent him, was greatly interested and means to write soon.

Heuser, Father H(ermann) J.: Overbrook, P(ennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Through he avoided Rome in order not to give rise to gossip, Heuser learned that the Holy Father has been undeceived about the aims of the men here who under pretense of national love propagate ruinous Liberalism (Americanism) in religious matters! Perhaps the Congress (Parliament) of Religions, with which he cannot feel any sympathy, may help to prove the worthlessness of the hope that concessions in Catholic teaching convert men to the true faith. What a beautiful figure Archbishop (Michael Augustine) Corrigan now stands beside the Apostolic Delegate.

Richemont, Count de: Paris, (France)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Richemont read with the greatest interest the copy of the Stimme der Wahrheit which Brownson sent his son. The speech Brownson delivered at the convention of the German Catholic Central Society is highly instructive and full of views worthy of serious consideration. Richemont asks for information on several points in Brownson's exposition, as one to whom Brownson's name was familiar many years before he met him in Detroit. In his youth he was one of the French subscribers to Brownson's Review, which had been popularized by Count (Charles) de Montalembert. He does not dispute Brownson's arguments and statistics on the losses among the immigrants suffered by the Church, though he asks whether the losses are not to be applied to the first periods of immigration and wonders whether Brownson regards the present movement of conversions as null or stationary or progressing; nor does he dispute the place occupied in the Church in America by the communities of German extraction, an opinion on which in accordance with Brownson he heard expressed five years ago by the late Marquis de Chambrun, who was also inclined to believe that amongst the different Catholic elements in America the German element would perhaps act the most powerfully on true American blood. But Richemont asks for more light on two other points, one speculative and one practical. The first is this: However one in their belief and "Credo", the different national branches of Catholicism may be said to possess each a sort of special aspect; the manyfold ethnic groups of Catholics vary more or less in their customs and tendencies. Richemont has lived in many European countries, and since the law may be ascertained everywhere, he has often tried to make out the existing and also the potential North American type among really believing and faithful Catholics. He met laymen and women, several bishops, some religious, and he was interested in tracing— sometimes in the same individual— very high mystic propensities blended with unexpectedly personal ways of thinking and acting on many points. But if he understands Brownson's meanings, two types of Catholics— the German and the English— are in way of formation in America. Richemont also asks what Brownson means by the expressions 'thousand newly invented devotions' and 'innovations in Catholic doctrine". Richmont asks for information on the school question and for Brownson's opinions. He has always been an opponent of the neutral school, and twenty years ago, as a member of the French National Assembly, corresponded with the Bishop of Rochester, (Bernare J. McQuaid), on the school question. Richemont regards the neutral school as an instrument for the dechristianization of France, an intention which has been admitted by some of the porponents of the neutral school, the words of two of whom he quotes. Although much has been said and written in France about Faribault and Stillwater, and he has received all kinds of letters written by Archbishop (John Ireland), the Roman Congregation, the Cardinal Secretary of State, and the Holy Father, Richemont remains clouded on the issue. It worries him that some Catholics are beginning to suggest that the neutral may not in itself be so absolutely bad, and he ascribes the high values attributed to the plan of Archbishop Ireland to be at the bottom of this idea, at least in France.
