There are two Scotch ladies there who are allied to the Seton family. They saw everything in Naples and then came here. From here they move to Sorrento, Capri, Naples again and Rome. Have Will(iam Seton) and his wife sailed for Europe? Lizzie would like to be here with them.

The regiment may move in the spring, possibly to Chicago.

She desires to ask of (Mary) O'Reilly the privilege of quoting as a preface her husband's poem "In Bohemia". They in California are beginning to feel the stringency of the times.

1894 Feb. 13
Seton, Geo(rge): Funchal, Madiera
to (Monsignor Robert Seton: Jersey City, New Jersey)

(Seton)'s letter of January 16 and a reprint of "Parbroath" reached him. He thanks (Seton) for ordering two copies of his contemplated book through Mr. Johnston. It appears that (Seton) never received a letter posted in Scotland September 13, 1893 with three copies of his original prospectus. About 120 copies of the book have now been subscribed for; the list includes (many titled names including Setons). He must get 50 more. Upwards of three years ago he sold St. Bennet's to the Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh who died about six months later and the house is now occupied by Archbishop (Angus) Macdonald. Seton frequently sees Mr. Coventry's two daughters, also Father Stevenson. The Falkland Setons are, he thinks, descended from an illegitimate son of his grand uncle, Major Christopher Seton. The silver chalice of Terregles would make an intersting illustration. Seton is receiving invaluable help from Mr. Gray, Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Mr. Munro Bell, an architect. Besides 300 colored shields of arms, Seton hopes to have numerous portraits, seals, signatures, etc. He would like to embrace (Seton)'s heirlooms. His friend Sir John Hope died; his successor is Sir W(illia)m Hope. Seton fears that the 13th Earl of Eglinton is not worthy of his position. Seton concurs with (Seton)'s estimate of Sir W(illia)m Fraser for whom nobody has a good word. Seton sticks to Sir Richard Maitland's account of the earlier generations of the family. He has not seen Colonel Alexander Seton's memorial tablet but he is in frequent communication with his brother David (Seton), Lord of Mounie. He has a copy of Mary Seton's Testament. The duel of 1845 is new to him. The Say origin might be further examined. Was there a marriage between the Says and Mandevilles? Seton knew Sir William Hope John-ston. He does not think (Seton) gave him the Halkett episode. All Seton's books and heirlooms are at Ayton, the property of his son-in-law, W.L. Watson, where he and his youngest daughter usually spend the summer. Seton's second daughter Margaret Montgomerie (Seton) died of cholera at Shanghai in September 1890. She had married her second cousin, Vyvyan D'Oyly Winkle, son of Alfred Winkle. He, like Seton's son, is now in business in London. Mrs. Watson's only child Robert William Seton (Watson) is 14 with a marvelous knowledge of genealogy; he has lately gone to Winchester. Seton's youngest daughter Mary Stuart (Seton) looks after her father. They intend to remain in Funchal until the middle of April, then return to London for two or three months. P.S. His son informs him that the "Oration" awaits his return to London.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Brownson returns Father (Herman J.) Heuser's letter. He attaches more importance to the extract made from it in the Ave Maria now that he knows who made the remark. Brownson has come to regard the "American Ecclesiastical Review" as an excellent periodical. In some churches morals and dogma are hardly preached because the various devotions are more profitable.

M(onarch), Lamar: Owensboro, K(entuck)y

If he mistakes not the tenor of Edwards' letter was that as a kind of physical fact Edwards missed him some. It was not unnatural after seven years of pretty regular visits to Edwards' room. His book-case and things came. They will remind him of his happy days in Sorin Hall, Ada and Lamar have stopped corresponding.

(Stone), C.P., Father Fidelis: Normandy, M(iss)o(uri)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

When their fortnight's work was ended at Pittsburgh the Provincial told Stone to go right back to St. Louis. He did not ask to go by way of Notre Dame. He does not know now whether he is going to Rome at all. At Pittsburgh he met Father Edmund (Hill, C.P.). He is more condescending now than usual in literary matters. Stone wrote the verses for one person. She is probably with her adopted mother Mrs. Michael J. O'Connor. He was told that they sailed for Europe on the same day when Stone last went to Rome. Her name is Mary O'Connor. There is sad news from Buenos Aires on the death of Father Maurice ( ). Father Edmund is the only intimate left among his religious companions. Hill is at present giving a mission at St. Raphael's Church in New York.
