Coppens, S.J., Father C(harles): Omaha, Neb(raska)
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Coppens wishes Brownson and his family a happy and holy New Year. He is not lonely away from Detroit, for he is interested in his new occupation at Creighton College, which is a nascent university, with 185 pupils in the College, all in the classical course and well up to the standards of the Jesuit colleges. There are 50 medical students and an able corps of professors, all devoted to their work, though only two are Catholics. They hope to start a law school in a few years and might have done so already had it not been for the hard times. Only about one-tenth of Omaha's population are Catholics, but the College is so founded that they need require no tuition of the students; and liberal patrons are willing to aid the University to develop its departments. Father Coppens has the class of philosophy in the College and also gives a few lectures on ethics to the medical students. His health is better than it ever has been, and he asks about Brownson's rheumatism.

Howe, Frances R(ose): Hot Springs, Ark(ansas)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Howe has just returned from New Orleans. She wishes she could share (Maurice Francis) Egan'sconviction on the holiness of convent life in Italy. Why Marion Crawfordwishes to hold up their abuse of religious life to a Protestant public she would like to ask. Wherein does the spirit of such a thing differ from the cry raised at Howe's mother's death? Does Hudson deem Robert Louis Stevensonworthy of Catholic gratitude? Father (Henry F.J.) Krolloccasionally works himself into a regular stew for fear that the confessions Howe makes represent only one half of her life. If it does not come to a speedy end she must seek another home, but always a thoroughly secular home.

Laura Edwards will perhaps take a cousin and Elizabeth will go with Will(iam Seton) or some of the Jevons, who will not want to miss Robert's lecture. She has a room with Agnes O'Donoghue. Benziger Bros., per C.: New York, (New York)
 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Benziger Brothers do not care to publish Brownson's proposed translation of Father Moritz Meschler's "Taben des H. Pfingstfester" since they have too many unpublished mss. on hand to think of undertaking more, and since they have published more in the last year or two than warranted by the times. Their attention was called to this particular book not long ago by a prominent Jesuit, and after consideration they concluded that there would not be enough sale for it to warrant bringing it out. They will be glad to do what they can for its sale if Brownson can arrange with any other publisher.

Badesse, Sister Maria Serafica Fedeli: Foligno, Italy
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister thanks Hudson for the Ave Marias with the account of the dead hand preserved in their monastery of St. Anna. The convent is the first of all the houses of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Assisi. In 1880 it became the property of the town council of Foligny. At present the municipio seeks to sell it for thirty thousand francs. How can they abandon a house sanctified by so many holy people for five centuries and lately by Sister Theresa Margherita Gesta who imprinted her dead hand on the door seen by Father Arthur Barry O'Neill, C.S.C.? Would it be possible to appeal to the readers of the Ave Maria in order that they might contribute to the purchase of their old house?

Barderey, (Helen) B(ailly) de: Paris, France
to Monsignor (Robert Seton: Jersey City, New Jersey)

It pains Barberey to learn that (Seton)'s health is not good. His constitution is robust, but no one can survive the overworking of the brain. She should have thanked (Seton) for the almanac, but she has been ill with bronchitis. 1894 was a year of sorrow for her family. January 19 they lost their brother; six months later their sister-in-law, Countess Roederer, died at 58. A few days later, God gave her a great happiness. Alexander, a widower for 4 1/2 years, married a charming person. Barberey's husband's health is very good. At 76 he retains his taste for sociability and reading. They both suffer at the desolate state of their country. The new president has no political sense; he lets the violent lead him.
