to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards' letter produced quite a change in the size of his hat. He was very much surprised to hear from Edwards. Edwards had been sort of changed toward him. He is quite a dignified chap with side whiskers and all. He doesn't drink, but swears like old Nick.

Dorsey, Ella Loraine: (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey hunted for her copy of "Saxty's Angel" but could not find it, and "Brahmin's Xmas" proved too short. Hudson did pay her the royalty on the first edition of "Jet". The reason Dorsey wants to know about copyrights is that she wants the Ave to have its full share of the benefits which arise from the book Benzigers have engaged from her.

He thinks, from indications in this A.P.A. district, that George (Weadock) will run for Congress against Flathead Linton. His division of the Naval Reserves go on their cruise next week.

He has received two slurring letters from (William Henry?) Thorne. He showed one to Bishop (Joseph) Rademacher. Thorne censured the Bishop.

Schmitt, Father Edm(ond) J. P.: Vincennes, Indiana

Some time previous to his trip to Texas he sent Edwards a catalogue of his library. He was obliged to leave on account of lung trouble. He is now the chaplain of St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum, but may be obliged to return to Texas. He would like to dispose of his library. He came across many historical objects in Texas, a chalice of Father Badin, bell cast in 1690, etc. which he could obtain, being able to say they are for Notre Dame. As his health is sinking, he would like Edwards to take over his library.

to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Doyle asks Brownson's opinion on the present political situation. (Orestes A. Brownson)'s political articles never claimed much of his attention until lately and he once thought they might better have been omitted from Brownson's edition of his work, but he acknowledges his mistake and now admires them more and more. If Brownson has published anything on the subject, Doyle does not ask the favor of a personal letter.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

If at all convenient, McQuaid will be at the blessing of (Corrigan)'s Seminary on the 12th. Archbishop (John J. Williams) is with McQuaid at the Lake. McQuaid regrets to hear that the Sulpicians object to women's work except in the kitchen and laundry. Then the Seminary will be overrun with vermin, as happened at Brighton. Men cannot keep a clean house. They kept Seton Hall clean because they had women to do women's work. Here everything has worked admirably. McQuaid is about to begin the enlargement and completion of the Cathedral and finds he can build twenty per cent cheaper now than in better times. The whole cost will be about $60,000; one half paid by the diocese, the other by the Cathedral congregation. The people seem well disposed; over half of the Cathedral quota is subscribed.

Steele, Florence Ewing: Point Chautaugua, N(ew) Y(ork)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The honor of having a letter from Edwards was duly appreciated. She and her mother were at Lake Wood where it is dull to put it mildly, so some old fosil said it was fine up here. The only fun is going to Chautauqua where the most awful push of preachers is congregated.

to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Father Morrissey is arranging the course of lectures for the coming scholastic year and is anxious to have Brownson's name on the list which he intends to announce in the next issue of the Scholastic. The time for the lectures can be arranged to suit Brownson's convenience, either before or after Christmas. He intends to have memorial services for (Orestes A. Brownson) some time during the year and he would like to have Brownson lecture on him. In this way they may arouse in the hearts of the students and their many friends a new enthusiasm for the works of the first Dr. Brownson.
