1896 Nov. 3
Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Hudson hopes Brownson and his family are in good health. He has hoped many times to see him and has as often been disappointed. His work and worry increase with the years. He asks Brownson to furnish an article on the Cabot brothers, whose 400th anniversary is being celebrated by Canada next year, for the Ave Maria—a short article of four or five pages. He sends his regards to Mrs. Brownson and to Father (Ernest) Van Dyke. Brownson's friends at Notre Dame are in good health and do not forget him. Father (Stanislaus) Fitte, C.S.C., is still as active as ever but is humiliated when told that Bryan beats him. Father Tim(othy O') Sullivan appears now and then and is always ready to take sides on any subject. He dresses better now than formerly and is less interesting in many ways: long residence in Chicago has had its effect on him.

They (The Burrows Brothers Company) are sending Vol. I of the Jesuit Relations, a set of which Edwards has subscribed for. The enterprise is so great that they would like a frank opinion on the work from those whose good judgment on historical works is valuable.

1896 Nov.12
Barry, Father William: Dorchester, Eng(land)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Will Hudson mention what terms he would suggest for a literary article? The most important writing he has done has been anonymous. If the time is allowed him he has promised to expand for publication the four lectures he delivered last March at the Royal Institute of London. Barry has promised to write a series of articles for the "Monitor" of San Francisco.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard sent only the first monthly part of the Ave Maria containing the "Wonder Workers" to his sister. He asks that the second and third monthly parts be sent to her, Mrs. Parker Maker. Does Hudson think of making a little book of "Wonder Workers"? The University scandal is killing the institution. His nerves are badly shaken.

1896 Nov. 13
Gregori, Fannie: Cormons, (Austria)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

It is very hard to find time to write as she has to be constantly with her charge. She was glad to hear that the pictures arrived safely and pleased Sister Aloysius. It was agreed that (Luigi) Gregori would paint the six for $200 but as the sixth is unfinished she leaves it up to Edwards to do the best he can for her. She must divide the money with her two brothers who are both in need. She would be better satisfied if the Nativity remained at Notre Dame, where so much of Gregori's work is collected. Gregori's habits were always very regular, he was always quiet and never cared for honors or public praise. He was always ready to assist those in need. Nothing gave him any pleasure except art. He was free from jealousy and the first to recognize superiority. (Enclosed note): Gregori was born in Bologna, July 8, 1819. At the age of 14 he began the study of art under Frulli. At 19 he went to Rome and Florence to study the old masters. In Rome Prince Piquatelli of Monte Leone took him under his protection. Gregori's works were nearly all sent to foreign countries among which was the portrait of one of the Princesses of Holland. In 1856 he took part on the concours of Bologna for which he painted Herod and Herodia rebuked by St. John. Another notable painting also in Bologna is that of Cleopatra. Gregori was a great imitator of the antique. He worked a great deal in the Vatican for Mgr. De Merode. He painted a portrait of Pius IX from life. In 1874 he went to America. In 1891 he returned to Italy where he painted the Discovery of America now in Chicago.

1896 Nov.18
(Egan), M(aurice Francis): Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Egan is obliged for Hudson's notice of "Conway". He will make the new series as good as he can. Those that blame Archbishop (Michael Augustine) Corrigan are uncharitable. He is as anxious for peace and good will as any other man. Archbishop (John) Ireland's letter has made him a powerful man in political circles there, and he and Monsignor Joseph Schroeder seem to have met on common ground. Hudson can have little idea of the teaching power of Father (Thomas) Bouquillon. Stoddard has an average of 25 at his lectures. He hates his work and he hates the place.

Eyanson, Thomas E.: Seattle, Washington
 to Charles ( ):

When in Philadelphia he found in the library of the American Catholic Historical Society a record by a Jesuit priest of their family living in Salem County, New Jersey, from 1759 to 1776. His grandfather had a nail factory which was suppressed by the British government. He was born in Maryland. He would like to know if there is a record of these early settlers in Maryland. Perhaps it would be among some of the church records as they were all Catholics. He asks Charles to see if anything can be found in the Notre Dame library.
