Hurth, (C.S.C.), Bishop P(eter) J(oseph): Dacca, (India)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

East Bengal still continues to be out of the plague district. The famine gives them enough to do. Their means of support are not increased, but many demands are made upon them. The M. P. quoted in the Ave is too general in his remarks on the dishonesty of the native converts in India. Hurth's opinion is that Europeans expect too much of native Christians. Converts to Christianity are sometimes made by methods that cannot be called honest. Swami Vivekanda(?), the representative of NeoHindooism at the Religious Parliament in Chicago, has reached Calcutta and the natives have gone wild over him. Unfortunately some European and American writers lend credibility to the mad assertions of this mercenary vagabond. A new Baptist preacher in Dacca proclaims that Catholics are forbidden to read the Bible.
