Dijon, Harold: Richmond, V(irgini)a
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dijon thanks Hudson for recommending him to the President of Notre Dame. He would be willing to work without salary until he approved himself. He has had a terrible time.

Robinson, Wilfrid C.: Bruges, Belgium
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

1897 July 2
Schmitt, Father Edmond J. P.: San Antonio, Texas
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

For months he has been waiting patiently for an answer to his letters. Another party in Indiana as well as the American Catholic Historical Society wish to take the matter of buying his collection into consideration. He is hardly able to write on account of his health. Edwards wrote that he has a proposition to make. He has given ample time and if he does not write by the end of a few weeks, Schmitt is forced to turn elsewhere.

 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Father van der Eerden thanks Brownson for the pamphlet he sent and congratulates him that as a true American he dares to speak the truth. He asks him to send, with bill, 12 copies to him at St. Louis University. He will spend a few days with their Scholastics at Waupaca, Wis., before going West. Before the end of the month he will see Father (John P.) Frieden, S.J., who has asked him to give some missions in California.

Corby, C.S.C., Father W(illiam): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to James F. Edwards: (Toledo, Ohio)

He will act on Edwards' suggestions as far as he can. Father Roberts will preach their retreat. Mother Ascension was overcome by the heat and was anointed, but she is better this morning. (Maurice Francis) Egan was there yesterday; he is the same. He puts up at the O'Brien's in South Bend. Says he has a contract to arrange the English course for the Dominicans. P.S. Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C. received his LL.D. They call him Doctor. Hudson does not like to be called Doctor.

French, (C.S.C.) Father J(ames): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Toledo, Ohio)

Mother Ascension was anointed last evening. Dr. Cassidy said that the heat was too much for her. The Pan American Commercial Men will call at Notre Dame Thursday and take tea with them. Father Robert, C.P. will preach their retreat. Father (William) Pardow S.J. will preach at St. Mary's. (Maurice Francis) Egan looked more aged than when here.

Magruder, A(lbert) S. J.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to James F. Edwards: Toledo, Ohio

He delivered Edwards' note to Mr. Flynn. A marked article in a Dubuque paper records the running away of a horse with a buggy. Mrs. D. D. Myers was hurt and Mrs. Maria Jones Hay and Mrs. Henry Clay Scott were instantly killed. The priest at Michigan City through Father (James A.) Burns (C.S.C.) presented an old historical work to the library. He asks about having some papers bound.

 to Father (Daniel E.) H. P. (!) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

A conference on social problems of the day will be held in Battle Creek, October 12-17. Sherin lists the subjects which will be considered. Rev. Sameul (Samuel) G. Smith, pastor of the Peoples' Church, Saint Paul, will be president. Hudson is invited to participate with the following: C(harles) C. Bonney; C. R. Henderson; Dr. Arthur Edwards; Henry Wade Rogers; Father W. R. Harris, Mrs. Henry Wade Rogers; Jane Addams; Dr. Graham Taylor; Lucy Rider Meyer; Rev. H. W. Bennett; H(azen) S. Pingree; J. H. Kellogg; A. T. Metcalf; E. C. Nichols; H. B. Baker; Rev. Morgan Wood; Prof. ( ) Vaughn of Michigan State; Bayard Holmes; Cyrus Northrop; H. M. Higenbothan; W. T. Baker; Mrs. J. M. Flower and Rev. N. D. Hillis. They want at least two leading Catholic speakers in addition to what they have.

Lenihan, Bishop Geo(rge) M(ichael): Ponsonby, N(ew) Z(ealand)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lenihan is sorry to hear that division and discussion are likely to cause such havoc to their faith in America. (William Henry) Thornes (Thorne) of the Globe Review is a great crank. He did more harm than good to their cause. He had no right to slate Archbishop (John) Ireland so vulgarly.

1897 July 9
Talbot, John W.: South Bend, Ind(iana)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Mr. Thad Taylor of South Bend found some spear heads and arrow heads of flint while working on his property in South Bend. A letter from Edwards asking for them in the name of Notre Dame would secure them for the collection.

1897 July 9
Anson, Geo(rge) Meehan: Merrill, (Wisconsin)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

This finds him trying to survive the heat. He just returned from a trip in the woods where he spent a week looking over some pine lands. Edwards is such a will of the wisp that one cannot be confident that their letters will reach him direct. He is planning to spend a vacation at Green Lake. He is still in the employ of his father. If he goes north he will look up a canoe for Mr. Fish.

Eccles, C(harlotte) O'Conor: London, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

1897 July 13
(Myers), Geo(rge W.): Dubuque, Iowa)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He encloses a clipping describing his mother's accident. Her escape was miraculous but the shock to her nervous system was severe. Mrs. Hay who was killed was a daughter of Gen. Jones, as is also Mrs. Deuss. Mrs. Deuss will carry out her sister's promise to give Edwards some letters of Bishop Loras. He blushes with shame to think that he nvever acknowledged the receipt of the N.D.U. pin Edwards sent him for Christmas. He is still working his way through the world and thinks the good example Edwards has set him has done considerable good.

1897 July 14
Sullivan, Monsignor John T.: Clarksburg, West V(irgini)a
 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Monsignor Sullivan has ready for publication of about 50 pages, "Conversions and God's Ways and Means in Them, "which will have at least three or four pages about (Orestes A. Brownson). The first edition will consist of between 3000 and 5000 copies and he hopes it will have a considerable sale. He will mention Brownson's Works in the notice, and if Brownson will pay $15 or $20 toward the expense of getting out the pamphlet, he will embody a good advertisement for the Works. If Brownson thinks this desirable, he might formulate 10 or 12 lines to be worked in. Last December he got out a similar pamphlet of 5000 copies, of which nearly 2500 are already in circulation.

1897 July 17
Schmitt, Father Edmond J. P.: San Antonio, Texas
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He will try to make his case clear. From 1878 he began to collect books and various historical objects. When in 1886 he decided to devote himself to the study of history, he collected everything he could obtain, branching off later on the History of the Catholic Church in the United States. He made a proposition to the Abbot of St. Meinrad's Abbey but the chapter did not accept. Ill health forced him to resign his parish. He is in debt $950 for his books and could easily sell them for this amount, but he would like to have the use of the books while he lives. It seems impossible that Edwards should possess so many of the works he has. If he lives he will begin his early history of the Spanish Church in the South and West.

Hurth, (C.S.C.), Bishop P(eter) J.: Dacca, (India)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's letter and cheque for fifty intentions have been received. Hurth's house has stood the shocks of the earthquake as well as any for a hundred miles in each direction. When he could oversee the whole of the disaster he wept for a quarter of an hour. The work must chiefly be done by Hindoos and Musselmans. They are far from experts, but thieves every one of them.

(Schmidt), Oscar: Rock Island, (Illinois)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Starbuck, Charles C.: Andover, Mass(achusetts)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The paper which contains the quotation used by Father (Henry G.) Ganss was published by Professor ( ) Park, then head of Andover theology. Starbuck, though living in Andover and a contributor to the "Andover Review", is not personally an Andover man. He is glad that American participation in the Jubilee made a good impression in England.

Wabraushek, J. W(illiam): Manistee, Mich(igan)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Since the first of March he has been alone in the office and has been trying to keep up the work but it is too much. He has not had a day off since the world's fair. He sends a picture of his little family. He was in Grand Rapids on business but had no time to run down to see Edwards. He would appreciate a letter from Edwards, but he knows how busy he is during vacations.

Ganss, Father H(enry) G.: Carlisle, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ganss returns the proof of the preface for "Mariolatry" with a few corrections. The critique in "The Church Progress", he suspects, is from the pen of Conde Pallen, who has an old score to settle with Ganss. Before submitting the work to Hudson, it underwent a careful consorship at the hands of Father Luke McCabe, one of the most scholarly priests in the state.

Corby, C.S.C., Father W(illiam): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (New York, New York)

He was glad to hear from Edwards and to know that his dear friends Mgr. (Robert) Seton and Dr. Richard Clarke are well. From the moment he first met Seton he formed an affection for him. Seton is an honor to the priesthood. He would be delighted to see him at Notre Dame for the Eucharistic Congress. There will be about 14 bishops and 300 priests there. He has a high regard for the good Dr. Clarke has done for the Church. Father Joseph Kirsch goes to Cincinnati. Father Condon is visiting his mother in Canada.

Ganss, Father H(enry) G.: Carlisle, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ganss worked hard to make the installment a success, for Protestant controversialists look upon the Glories of Mary as the arsenal from which to draw their most deadly weapons. He sends the beginning of the reply dealing with St. Bernard.

E(des), E(lla) B.: Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

What a shame the Dorsey family should have been done out of the literary proprietorship of "Tears on the Diadem". Edes finds that Catholic publishers are dishonest people to deal with. She sends Hudson a picture of Blessed Rita da Cascia. The life of St. Zita of Lucca was Edes' first venture in translating. Father ( ) Moylan, S.J., her confessor and director of the Rosary Society, re-one in the library. Starr is willing to have Hudson advocate a few prize books both for Notre Dame and St. Mary's. She will be glad to prepare something for the Ave Maria.

He is going to return to Notre Dame. This will be good news for Edwards. He is not going to live in Brownson Hall; he got all of that he wants. About the 25th he will go to N. D. to furnish his room and he will go to visit Frank (Dukette) until school opens. He describes the accident in which Mrs. Myers was hurt and two others killed.
