1897 Nov. 8
Craft, Father Francis M. J.:
Cheyenne Agency, S(outh) D(akota)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It is incredible that interests and prejudices should be so strong as to make priests and bishops villify and destroy helpless Sisters. Craft does not know whether the part of his article appeared in the "Catholic World". Five of their best Sisters left them. After the conduct of the priests and missionaries they demanded a release from their vows. They said they could no longer endure the contempt, hatred and abuse manifested towards their race. They said they would return when the Church proved to them that Americans and Indians could be as favorably treated as Catholics, as are foreign Catholics. These are the first Indians who have fallen under Catholic fire. If Craft could have gotten the Sisters (of the Congregation of American Sisters) East, things might have been better. The Indian department was anxious to see the Sisters, and Father (Joseph A.) Stephan of the defunct Indian bureau could easily have obtained railroad passes. Craft wrote to ask him to do this, but he happened to be on the side of their enemies. Bishop (Thomas) O'Gorman refuses to answer the Indians and gives the priest at the mission an emphatic "no". Bishop (John) Shanley, to whom Craft wrote, won't answer at all.

1897 Nov. 8
Hurth, (C.S.C.), Bishop P(eter) J(oseph): Dacca, (India)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The check for $233.50 is safe in Hurth's hands. Through hasty notes written to Father (William) Corby, (C.S.C.), Hudson may have learned that Providence is becoming more mysterious. The cyclone of October 24 was disastrous: 3,000 lives lost and 1,000,000 homeless. On the day of the cyclone Hurth boarded a vessel to come homeward and only the experience of the captain saved them from going into the center of it. The plague is spreading alarmingly. On All Saints they laid a corner stone for a church there.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The "Washington Post" wished to know if Stoddard would take charge of a literary department. They wish him to leave the University and devote his whole time to it. What does Hudson think of it? How (Maurice Francis) E(gan) would jump to the chance!

Frieden, S.J., Father J(ohn) P.: San Francisco, (California)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Frieden asks for some copies of "Equality and Democracy," and assures Brownson that Philip (Brownson), who has come to see him several times, is well and impresses him favorably. It will please his mother to know that he attends to his religious duties faithfully. Father Frieden is in good health, for which he is thankful, for his work demands the endurance of more than ordinary strength.

1897 Nov. 10
Mannix, Mary E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix is sure the third chapter of the Chimney Sweep must have reached Hudson. After writing the second chapter Mannix was taken with an attack of the grippe. How long will she make her serial for next year? Mannix thinks that it is girls who have had no training from their mothers who are idle and useless and such as Miss ( ) Elder describes. Mannix wonders that Archbishop (William Henry) Elder permitted that publication in the "Catholic Telegraph". Mannix believes he has an overwhelming pride in his relations.

St. Joseph, Sister: Nagpur, India
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister thanks Hudson for the draft for $473 in answer to the appeal. This enables them to go on with their work of charity in rescuing the unfortunate. She has asked help from many but no replies as yet. They are going out tomorrow 200 miles away. As soon as Hudson's check was received, arrangements were commenced to shelter the girls. They must have a house ready when they take in more children. Hudson has been the first to help and another letter came from America with $10 from a reader of the "Ave Maria."

1897 Nov. 13
Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, (Wisconsin)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Doyle thanks Brownson for his letter of Nov. 2 and encloses a letter from a friend to whom he sent a copy of the "Refutation of Atheism." (M. J.) Thomas is a so-called member of the Episcopal Church, and though he has read Newman's "Grammar of Assent," this is the first of (Orestes A. Brownson)'s works he has read.

 Enclosure follows:

1897 Nov. 10
Thomas, (M. J.): Chicago, Ill(inois)
to (William T. Doyle): (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)

"The Refutation of Atneism" is sufficiently convincing, though (Orestes A. Brownson)'s attempt to prove Christian theism is less successful. The book is especially interesting because of the clear presentation of the views on being and God held by the great thinkers, and because of the fact that most of the moderns from Descartes, Kant and Locke on are mainly concerned with the science of knowledge and have little or nothing to say about being. He notices also that all mythologies seem to point to the original theistic conception and that at least in matters of theology there has been no ascent of man; and also the contention that science precedes faith. But Thomas is not a metaphysician. He wonders that Brownson, a man of learning fully the peer of the Tyndals, Huxleys, and Taines, is little known outside the Catholic Church.

to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

(Egan), M(aurice Francis): Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Egan has just come back from Anthony Hope's "Afternoon". He dropped into the Patent Office on the way down to see (Ella Loraine) Dorsey but she is still inconsolable over the loss of her mother. (Charles Warren) Stoddard is threatened with a fever. Egan was glad that Stoddard's visit to Notre Dame made him feel more at peace with the world. There is no bishop like (John Lancaster) Spalding.

Coppens, (S.J.), Father C(harles): Omaha, Neb(raska)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Coppens was planning a series of articles to show that Darwin's system is absurd. He was shocked to see an article in the "Catholic World" inducing Catholics to lay aside their aggressive attitude towards evolution. Coppens offers Hudson a series of papers explaining why he cannot accept Darwinism.

to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

A library of Blessed Virgin works is a grand ides but what can a man do without means. He asks if the Father Miller, (C.S.C.) who died at Notre Dame some time ago is Father Louis Miller born near there.

to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

1897 Nov. 21
Brandi, S.J., Father S(alvatore) M.: Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

Brandi has delayed answering the Archbishop's letter of October in the hope of giving him some information about the (Catholic) University. All he can say is that the university has been and is under Propaganda.Cardinal (Camillus) Mazzella told him that it was proposed to transfer the university from the care of propaganda to that of Studies but as a Jesuit he was unwilling to take the responsibility for the things that were proposed. Now that Mazzella has been promoted to the Congregation of Rites and Cardinal (Francisco) Satolli has succeeded him in Studies the question has com up again. Brandi was unable to learn the decision. The case of Msgr. (Joseph) Schroeder has created a painful impression in high cricles but it has showed the animus of certain persons aginst him in Washington. Schroeder has powerful friends in Rome. Many of the Jesuits, including Brandi, have received many favors through Father (John) Edwards and would like to see him made a domestic prelate but know that the initiative must come from (Corrigan) without any expense to him. The pope is well, granting audiences yesterday and saying Mass for the public. P.S. Should (Corrigan) prefer, Edwards could be made simply a monsignor but some think that is too little.

(1897) Nov. 24
St. Joseph, Sister: Nagpur, India
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson may insert all or part of this letter in the "Ave Maria." She request that he leave out passages regarding Protestants and also Baptisms. The Protestants do not suspect that they baptize children in "articulo mortis," or that they are permitted to baptize adults. A priest could not get access to those places. She cannot thank Hudson enough for what he has done through the "Ave Maria." They are called the Sister of St. Joseph. Their Institute is primarily French but they have all nations. Here they have French, German, English, Irish, Anglo-Indians, etc.

Maurice, Sister:
St. Mary's, Vigo Co., Ind(iana)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Believing that Edwards would be pleased to have his name affixed to something fine, she takes the liberty to suggest what they would consider a valuable addition; walrus tusks, trumpeter, swan, a badger, fawn. However if times are too hard, Edwards need not trouble to write to the firm for prices.

Welch, S.J., Father Edw(ard) H.: Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father Daniel (E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Welsh has a large number of post graduates attending his lectures. Hudson has likely heard of the efforts some of their Boston ladies are making to interest their Protestant friends in the teachings of the Church. Of course, Hudson has heard of the tragedy of the Catholic Church in Boston. Joseph Iasigi has been convicted of embezzlement. He married Mary Homer and they have four children. Father (Henry J.) Shandelle, (S.J.)'s parents celebrate their golden jubilee. Two daughters are married and three are religious.

Seton, Mgr. Robert: Jersey City Heights, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)

Stoddard just got home from Providence Hospital. A package came this morning evidently not intended for him. Ken(neth O'Connor) sent the last proof. More C(atholic) U(niversity) scandal in the papers this morning. (John?) Quinn will be good riddance. He is a crank and has made no end of trouble. The "New York Journal" says Stoddard contemplates resigning. He doesn't.

Conway is asking the head of their bookstore to order 50 copies of (Charles Warren) Stoddard's book on St. Anthony. So Mother Seraphine is getting up another book. Her intention may be the best in the world but she can neither write nor compile. Does Hudson look at Charles O'Malley's paper where "genius" is predicated of almost everyone who can string sentences together? (Francis) Marion Crawford comes tomorrow for their reading club.
