(1898?)
Bonnet, Father Joseph: (New York, New York)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

Bonnet read the little book of Father (A.J.) Delattre, and it was more exhaustive on a theological standpoint than that of Father (Charles) Maignen. Nothing is left of the dogmatic or historical grounds on which Father Isaac Hecker rested his maxims of independence from external rule. Hecker expressed his ideas imperfectly about external rule.

(1898?)
Clark, Frederic Horace: Valparaiso, Indiana
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Will he send "Iphigenia" to (Maurice Francis) Egan? Clark was excused from the College Chapel music service. Social boycott has strengthened him. Many students and teachers show how narrow-minded they think he is to obey the bishop. Father M( ) J. Marsile, (C.S.V.?), advised Clark to be on the lookout for another place. Can Hudson do anything that he can get the position of teaching music, philosophy and art at the new women's college attached to the Catholic University? Piano methods of today are based on schismatic action of the body members. Little Antoinette (Clark) has scribbled a letter on the back. His oldest son, Fritz (Clark), has been asked to join the order of Father Marsile.

(1898?)
(Dyer), Thomas: (East Canturbury, New Hampshire)

The eldress (Mother Dorothy) is on the point of death. She was one of the most gifted of women and held the position of superior for over 30 years. Poor (Thomas A.) D(wyer) will lose a friend in her. The mental strain under which he labors is dreadful.

(1898?)
Mannix, Mary E.: (San Diego, California)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix is sending a chapter of "Four Marys". One of their priests has been suspended for drunkenness. A Protestant told Father (Anthony) Ubach that he was going from saloon to saloon. It is incomprehensible to Mannix that he, without any intervening time of penance can take up his priestly functions. Bishop (George Thomas) Montgomery is very kind, but there is such a thing as being too kind. Mannix has just made the acquaintance of Mrs. ( ) Burnett, in-law of the late Judge (Peter H.) Burnett. She is in San Diego for the health of her four daughters.
