Ganss is afraid that Hudson's allusion to his reverence of Our Lady is misleading. He had little or no religion. His intimate association with (Robert) Ingersoll makes Ganss indulge in thoughts he would willingly banish.

Chadwick, Rev. J. W.: Brooklyn, N(ew) Y(ork)
to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Chadwick has been reading "Brownson's Early Years" with much interest, but if the letter on pp. 443-4 is Dr. (William Ellery) Channing's, how can he speak of himself as younger than (Orestes A. Brownson), when he was many years older? Also, Chadwick thought Channing was travelling in Pennsylvania in June, 1842. As his son resided in Providence, he thought the letter might be his, but he cannot discover his name. His copy of the book has several of the signatures mixed up.

Mulhane, Father L. W.: Mount Vernon, Ohio
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has asked that copies of General Rosecran's memorial be sent to Edwards. He thought he gave Edwards the information he asks. The little brass crozier originally belonged to Archbishop Purcell and was given to Bishop (Sylvester H.) Rosecrans when he was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Cincinnati. The large crozier was given to Rosecrans by the priests of the diocese of Columbus. Rosecrans always used the little one except at the Cathedral. His Bulls are in Columbus.

(Carroll), Alice and Frank: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

It seems so good to hear from Edwards. This place is so beautiful and right in front of the ocean. One can breathe in the pure salt air from the ocean. She really did not know how dear and fond Edwards was to them till the trial came. A true friend so good and noble is a treasure and Edwards' presence is uplifting and teaches them to bear trials with Christian fortitude. They want him to come. By some good deeds she can repay her teasing of last summer. Frank is so happy Edwards will be able to come on. God is so good to spare Edwards.

Elder Henry (Blinn) has had a slight improvement. He has always cherished a great respect for the Catholic Church. Blinn has been a close student of the Bible and Church history. He has always had great respect for the Society of Jesus. Dyer would like to know something about the Holy Cross Congregation. Two weeks ago one of their brothers left to join the Cowley brotherhood. Dyer would like to read "The Carmelites of Compiegne".

Never did she enjoy a visit so much. The boys were very kind. One could not help but enjoy themselves in company of such perfect gentlemen. It does one so much good to meet with truly nice and good young men. She thinks Edwards' friend Frank a charming young man. She is leaving tomorrow for a long visit with the Sisters.

Van der Eerden agrees that the state may not exclude religion from the schoolroom, but he disagrees with the first part of the "Note" in the Ave Maria. If parents judge it better that their children shall not learn to read and write, no state has the right to force them to send their children to school. Van der Eerden has spent about a year in California giving missions.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Highland Park, Ill(inois)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The weather has played havoc with Stoddard. Hudson lately spoke of Phillip Bronson (Philip Brownson?) and of his loss in a wreck at sea. Stoddard has lost all trace of it. Yesterday he received a letter from a kid of his, who used to sit on his knee at Knickerbocker's. He is now a professor of anatomy at Harvard; he is (Alexander) Agazzis (Agassiz's?) assistant.

to Father A(ndrew) Morrissey, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Under seperate cover they mail a write-up of Notre Dame for Morrissey's consideration. They ask that he make any changes he sees fit. They would appreciate a sketch of Father Morrissey's life. (Note: Morrissey writes in the margin: "This will do when I am dead.") They would also like a sketch of Father Sorin. Any suggestions relative to procuring the privilege of inserting the portraits of the several provincials at a nominal cost would be appreciated. (Morrissey notes that their cuts will not be loaned.)
