1898 Jul. 6
Spalding, James Field: Concord, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Spalding has followed Hudson's suggestions as to the title of his book. The publishers have begun sending proofs. He must write Father (Andrew) Morrissey, (C.S.C.), and ask him to accept his subjects. Hudson's item based upon Austin O'Malley's article is somewhat too severe on non-Catholic colleges. Spalding believes that hundreds of young men are in these colleges because they desire a fuller education than they can get elsewhere.

1898 July 8
Chute, Fred B.: Minneapolis, (Minnesota)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

He has stacks of old magazines to dispose of. If they would by of any service to Edwards, he would take pleasure in sending them. Harpers, North American Review, Scribners, and Century are probably complete and perhaps some others.

1898 July 10
Murphy, Thomas J.: Long Island, N(ew) Y(ork)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

As Edwards always took an interest in him, he thought he might want to know if he arrived safely. He thinks he will return to Notre Dame next year with his brother and two friends who are pretty fair athletes. He wants Edwards to visit him during the summer.

1898 Jul. 11
Brandi, S.J., Father S(alvatore) M.: Poppi, Province d'Orezzo, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

By this time (Corrigan) should have received a letter from Brandi written two weeks ago in which he mentioned Abbé (Charles) Magnien's publication. Many Cardinals like Parocchi, Ledochowski, Satolli, Aloisi-Masella, Pierotti, Mazzella, Steinhuber, Ferrata, Jacobini have spoken of it with praise and approbation. The same is to be said of the great majority of Roman prelates. It cannot be doubted that the book is regarded in Rome with favor. He has it on good authority that the life of Father Hecker by Father (Walter) Elliott has already been delated to the Congregation of the Holy Office by at least two French bishops, but he doubts that in the political situation a decree will be published. Father (A.J.) DeLattre, S.J. is out with his "Un Catholicisme Americain" which will have in Rome a large circulation and have more effect than Magnien's book, being more effect than Magnien's book, being more positive, doctrinal and avoiding personalities. Brandi will not fail to send other information. He is at their summer house but intends to return to Rome before the feast of St. Ignatius.

1898 Jul. 11
Herbermann, Cha(rle)s G.: Great Barrington, Mass(achusetts)
to Father (James H.) McGean: (New York, New York)

He could not see McGean in New York because he had expected to go to the University Convocation in Albany. He writes in regard to (U.S.) Catholic Historical Society matters. He is disappointed in Father Campbell who does not have his paper in shape. Herbermann is preparing an article on a French emigre colony in the Scioto Valley attempted during the Revolution. He has written an introduction and a short article on the Archbishop's Jubilee. He has Father (Isaac) Jogues' letter in facsimile, also the Archbishop's and Cardinal's photogravures. He is seeking photographs of certain people for the St. Fr(ancis) X(avier) College Jubilee volume. Benziger's is going to publish the Records and Studies for $170.

Edmonds, O.S.B., Father Columba: Fort-Augustus, Scotland
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

H(udson, C.S.C.), Father D(aniel) E.: Notre Dame, Indiana
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They have sent the books to (St. Clair A.) Mulholland as requested. There are only a few changes for next year. Father (Joseph) Scherer, (C.S.C.), goes to Cincinnati with Father ( ) Smoger, (C.S.C.), as his assistant. Father (James) Rogers, (C.S.C.), replaces Father Peter Lauth, (C.S.C.), in Austin, the latter going to New Orleans. Father (John M.) Toohey, (C.S.C.), is assistant in Austin. Father Alexander Kirsch, (C.S.C.), St. Edward's College. Father (Patrick W.) Condon, (C.S.C.), is pastor of the Church in Watertown. Scherer is replaced by Father (James A?) Burns, (C.S.C.). Father (James) Ready, (C.S.C.), will be in charge of Sorin Hall. Father (Louis) L'Etourneau, (C.S.C.), was appointed superior of the old Professed House.

Reuss, Francis X.: Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to Editor "Ave Maria" (Father Daniel E. Hudson C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He noticed in the "Ave Maria" of July 9, 1898, the notice of his "Biographical Cyclopaedia" in which the Editor remarks that it contains a few errors. He is grateful for this examination of his book and asks that the editor favor him with the reference to the errors so he can correct them in a future edition. He is grateful to Father Corby for putting him in communication with Bishop (C.M.) Dubuis and Bishop (Peter) Dufal (C.S.C.) (resigned bishops of Galveston, Texas)

(18)98 Jul. 15
Dyer, Thomas: East Canterbury, N(ew) H(ampshire)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dyer is looking forward to the arrival of "The Imitation of Christ". Their settlement is thronged with visitors from all parts of the country. All Catholics seem to know who Hudson is and have a deep respect for him. Dyer was interested in the pamphlet on the Congregation of the Holy Cross, but one statement he cannot understand. He tells of a young man (Thomas A. Dwyer?) who one day in November asked to see one of the Shaker elders. He was a Catholic who graduated from Fordham and entered the Jesuit novitiate. His father died and left him a fortune; he asked for dispensation from his vows. He attended lectures at Harvard, engaged a suite of rooms in Beck Hall, and sank lower and lower in sensuality. His money kept slipping away and he apostatized from the Catholic faith to secure from a Baptist bigot a position on the staff of "The Youth's Companion". Later he made a retreat and was received back into the Catholic Church. Arrangements were made for him to join the Augustinians. The day before the investiture the superior told him that the ceremony could not take place because Bishop (Thomas Daniel) Beaven refused to grant dimissorial papers, and also that Father (John A?) Buckley, (S.J.), declared he would bar him from every religious community he tried to enter. Dyer had full privileges as master of novices to receive him into the community. He and Dyer said the beads together. After a year he said he must enter some order of the Catholic Church. Dyer called at Boston College to see Buckley, who did not impress him. Buckley has recently been summoned before the great white throne. The young man finally decided to enter an Anglican community and there he is now. He is in Bishop (Charles Chapman) Grafton's diocese, Fon(d) du Lac, Wisconsin. He will never be content until he enters a religious community of his mother church. Last Lent he preached in the Episcopal Church in South Bend. Dyer asks Hudson to keep this out of print.

Foley, Birdie: Odell, Ill(inois)

1898 Jul. 16
Carne, W(illia)m F.: Alexandria, (Virginia)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Newspaper work has been his avocation since 1849, and it is only since 1880 that he has contributed to magazines. If it is inconvenient, he does not expect pay for "Campbell's Church". He is anxious to send an article on "The Catholic Daily".

1898 July 19
Fairhurst, James: London, England
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

For the past four months no copy of the "Ave Maria" has gladdened their eyes. He asks Edwards to see about it. If Edwards knew how much the magazine was appreciated, he would forgive his urging the sending of it. Despite the heat he is keeping hard at work. They rejoice with the success of their kinsmen over the waves in their war with Spain. But one cannot altogether help having a little sympathy with fellow Catholics however misguided we think them. The war has brought the United States and England nearer than they have ever been.

1898 July 19
Chute, Fred B.: Minneapolis, (Minnesota)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards' letter gave him pleasure as he hears so little from Notre Dame except through the "Scholastic". Edwards is aware that he studied law at the University of Minnesota, took his degree in '95 and the LL.M. the next year. He gives a humorous account of his first months' law practice. He has been dabbling in politics to the extent of helping nominate good men. In that state nomination by the Republican party means almost sure election. He has worked for the nomination of William Henry Eustis for governor.

1898 July 19
DeLane, Francis X.: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has been having such a good time that he didn't write to anyone. He inquires about Brother Emanuel. Grace writes that she is visiting her aunt in Odell. Two weeks ago he was in Lancaster and called on Brother Leopold (C.S.C.) who says he is enjoying his vacation. He met a priest the other day who was a friend of Dr. O'Malley's while in the seminary.

1898 July 21
Reuss, Francis X.: Philadelphis, (Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's notice in the "Ave Maria" was all that he would wish even if the book had been perfect. Regarding Bishop Dubuis as a member of the C.S.C., he got the idea somewhere and no one corrected him. He wrote to Prof. Edwards twice but received no reply. (Attached is a printed notice concerning Reuss' "A Biographical Cyclopaedia of the Catholic Prelates of the United States".)

1898 Jul. 23
Ireland, Archbishop John: St. Paul, Minn(esota)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

In refering to army chaplains Hudson in the Ave Maria says we must "bombard the government". He ought to say "bombard the episcopacy". It is the duty of the bishops to use their influence with the governors of the states. Ireland had no trouble getting a chaplain appointed to one of their Minnesota regiments. Neither did Archbishop (Patrick William) Riordan have any trouble.

(Dyer, Thomas): East Canterbury, N(ew) H(ampshire)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

1898 July 25
Snell, Merwin-Marie: St. Louis, (Missouri)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Snell is surprised not to have received a copy of "Brownson's Early Life" for review. The Church progress, under his editorship, has been for two years the organ, and the only organ, so far as he knows, of the precise views which Brownson gave forth in "Equality and Democracy," which he reviewed favorably and at some length. Brownson therefore should feel a special interest in this paper, all the more because the editor is an American of the old New England stock, a descendent of Hooker, Alden, Edwards, Pierpont, and Stoddard and a grand-nephew of William Cullen Bryant. He met Brownson at the Baltimore Congress in 1889 and would be glad to review anything he publishes and also to hear from him personally.

1898 Jul. 25
Taunton, Father Ethelred L.: Brentford, England
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Taunton hopes the manuscript of "Little Office of Our Lady" has reached Hudson. The war between the Latins and the Anglo-Saxons in ecclesiastical matters is of interest to Taunton. Father (Charles) Maignen on Father (Isaac) Hecker, (C.S.P.), is typical of the inability of a Latin to understand the position of others and the determination to enforce views which have nothing to do with divine deposition. Three hundred years of persecution has made English Catholics rabid Tories in matters ecclesiastical. Old Dom Augustine Baden, O.S.B., would never hold controversy with heretics.
