Bowen & Co. A. W. Logansport, Ind(iana)
 to J(ames F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Some ten days ago they wrote asking a favor of reviewing the write-up of Notre Dame, but have received no word from Edwards. It was a Father Morrissey's suggestion they wrote to Edwards. Knowing that with Edwards' acquaintance of the institution the task would not be very great.

Faulkner, Jasper: Madison, New Jersey
to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Although he is a Protestant minister Faulkner has always taken great interest in the life of Orestes A. Brownson, about whom he wrote the article in the 12th supplementary volume of McClintock and Strong's Encyclopedia. He asks the price, with discount to the clergy of "Brownson's Early Life." He remembers the long and pleasant talk he had with Brownson's son ( ), then at the Christian Brothers school in Halifax, in Faulkner's native province.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)

Since her request for an advance payment is inconvenient, the matter is settled. Tiernan suggests that Hudson send $150 as soon as it is convenient.

1898 Oct. 5
(Stone), C.P., Father Fidelis: Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stone told Father (Joseph H?) McMahon the gamecock story which he got from Father Edmund (Hill, C.P.). Why should he bring Christian Reid (Frances Christine Tiernan) in? The story would be likely to run the rounds of the American Catholic press. He first thought of writing to the "Catholic Universe" but he does not want to offend McMahon without necessity. McMahon is evidently a man of dangerous powers of imagination. Stone asks Hudson to thank Sister Rita, (C.S.C.), for the spicy letter from Fort Wayne. He has found that Emma Lazarus was nursed in her last illness by Catholic Sisters. Rose Hawthorne Lathrop was an intimate friend of hers and believes that she died a Catholic. So does Katherine E. Conway. Conway is spending a week in Rome. Stone has introduced her to (W. J. D.) Croke, correspondent of the "Philadelphia Standard" and the "London Tablet". Stone is getting ready to give the annual retreat to the Irish College.

Harson, M. J.: Providence, R(hode) I(sland)
 to

A meeting of the Brownson Memorial Committee will be held at the Catholic Club in New York City on Wednesday, October 12, at 8:00 P.M. The first business will be to elect a treasure to replace the late Father J(ames) H. Mitchell; and the next business will be to determine whether to abandon the intention of erecting a monument to Orestes A. Brownson in Central Park, or to return the money on hand to the various subscribers, or to secure the consent of the contributors to divert the money subscribed to some other use. Father William T. McGuire, President of the Catholic Young Men's National Union, has suggested that the over $4,100 now in hand be used to endow a scholarship in honor of Dr. Brownson at the Catholic University. Those who cannot attend the meeting are invited to notify Harson of their views on the foregoing propositions.

Eccles, C(harlotte) O'Conor: West Kensington, (England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They are grateful for Hudson's remembrance of their mother. Today Mary (O'Conor) and Eccles were going to her mother's grave, but the day turned our wet. Lately they had an American visitor, Katherine (E.) Conway. They saw by an American paper that Eccles' book "Miss Semaphore" has just been bought out by L. C. Page and Company of Boston. A German translation will soon appear. The Ave Maria took an independent position with regard to the war.

(Rhodius), George: New York,(New York)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

It gives him great pleasure to learn that Charlie is doing so well. Edwards states that Brother Alexander thought of taking him out of Special Arithmetic. He asks his if Charlie might not drop Arithmetic and take up some other study. He wants Edwards to use his own judgement, not forgetting that he wants Charlie to be a thorough financeer. It has been some ten days since he heard from home; they are trying to do with him that of which he has spoken to Edwards for the past several years.

Richardson, M(arion) M(uir): (Richardson, Utah)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Richardson is going to Morrison, Colorado soon. These people (Mormons) have Utah wholly: offices; laws; newspapers; schools and business. They are colonizing Idaho, Arizona, Wyoming, and Colorado. The Methodists are alarmed and the Presbyterians begin to see it. Purity hardly exists in interior Utah.

Brandi, S.J., Father S(alvatore) M.: Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(Corrigan)'s interesting and important letter of September 23 has been received. Brandi has already communicated its contents to the Cardinal Secretary of State but owing to the French and English pilgrimages the matter has not yet been attended to. Brandi assures (Corrigan) he will do every possible kindness to Mr. Thornton. Likely he has stopped in Paris since Brandi has not seen him. As Brandi anticipated, the life of Hecker was condemned by the Index but the decree was not published and will not be published. Americanism will soon receive a blow in a more solemn and telling manner in the shape of a pontifical document addressed to the Bishops of the U.S. The letter is now being prepared and it will not be too long before it will be made public. So much Brandi can tell (Corrigan) in strictest secret for his private information.

Stoddard sends the notice which appeared in the "Illustrazione Popolare" of Milan. He would like to see it translated. Kenneth (O'Connor) is beginning to act like himself. The Holy Cross students gave Stoddard a cordial welcome after vacation. Father (John Joseph) Fedigan, (O.S.A.), prior of the Augustinian convent for 16 years, has been removed. Enclosed is an envelope for a subscription to "Our Lady of Good Counsel" passed out at Sunday mass.

White, F. J.: Scranton, P(ennsylvani)a
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

White has tried all the priests in this valley and its immediate surroundings and thus far has not taken a single order from them. Some promised orders at first but later refused point-blank. A half-dozen may take the Works (of Brownson); and after he takes their orders he will branch out. If he had known that they were canvassed before so unsuccessfully, he would not have applied for a territory. He informs Brownson confidentially that it is priests who always complain of the high cost of the work and asks if it is not strange that men who receive so much money at such slight effort and labor should place such high value on it. White will try to sell the work to all the laymen who have the capacity or the means for it. Money is very scarce in this valley which may account for his lack of success.

Taunton, Father Ethelred L.: (London, England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Taunton was glad to read Hudson's remarks in the Ave Maria about (Father Charles) Maignen's book. A telegram published last week in the "London Daily Chronicle" says that the "Life of Hecker" has been put on the Index. A book by an English priest "Steps toward Reunion", containing much that was admirable has been admitted to that same honor. Whether for anything against faith or because it is inopportune and offensive to pious ears - which latter may have been Jesuited ears.

to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Guiney asks that the address on her Ave Maria be changed, as they have returned from Five Islands, Maine. The opening sonnet of the last number of the Ave Maria is lovely. Who is this Frances Newton Symmes? Guiney's father would only be in his sixty-second year now were he still here to help the Republic along. She hopes Hudson will be pleased with a thing of hers which will be in the Christmas Harper's.

Harson, M. J.: Providence, R(hode) I(sland)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

The meeting in New York on the 12th was slimly attended; nearly all the members at a distance wrote Harson favoring the scholarship. He had informed himself in the meantime that a very creditable memorial could be erected for $5000—a colossal bronze bust on an imposing pedestal. He conferred with ( ) Clausen, President of the Board of Public Parks, and with ( ) Barney, President of the Art Commission, and found that this would be acceptable if artistically satisfactory. The meeting favored the scholarship idea and Harson read Brownson's letter; but the difficulties in the way were so great that they finally agreed with Harson that the original idea ought to be carried out; and a resolution was adopted authorizing him to make the necessary contracts. During the meeting he suggested that the $500 or $600 collected during the past year hardly belonged to the Committee, and that it would be a good idea to fill out the amount to $1000 and present it to the Catholic University by the C.Y.M.N.U. for the purpose of buying books for a Brownson alcove in the University Library. Father (William T.) McGuire, the Union's President, did not accept the suggestion then and said that there would be no questions about the title to the amount collected this year, since it was all for (Orestes A.) Brownson's memory. Last week Harson repeated the suggestion to him and he has agreed. There will therefore be a Brownson feature at the Convention in Washington next week and the Catholic University will have a practical memorial to Dr. Brownson.

1898 Oct. 22
Huebscher, O.S.B., Brother Leo: New York, (New York)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, (Michigan)

Having returned from Maspeth, L. I., to New York, Frater Leo has more leisure for reading and he has enjoyed "Brownson's Early Life" and "Faith and Science," in which Brownson's presentation of the problem, as well as his arguments and answers to objections, are clear and conclusive, and he has not found one point where he disagrees with Brownson's and (Orestes A. Brownson)'s philosophy. Presumably, by a slip of the pen Brownson has referred to an essay of his father as "The Principles of Causality" instead of "The Problem of Causality" He was pleased to follow Brownson through "Thomist and Synthetic Philosophy" and find exactly the same ideas which he had once expressed in German while in Switzerland. What Brownson says on p. 140 of a universal and continued tradition of a revelation is proved in the three volumes of Dr. Willman of Prague's "Geschichte des Idealismus." It is sad that many of our learned men seem too much blinded by a faulty system than to apprehend the light shed by those who have conquered the bias. A Maecenas should have the only true philosophy in synthetic form distributed free to every library. It would eventually bring about a change in public opinion concerning Catholic philosophy, a change which would be to the advantage both of philosophy and theology.

to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Credit did not appear for that New Orleans document by one of those odd turn of affairs that happen against one's inclinations. He wrote in on the proof sheet but the printer did not add it. Catholics woefully lack historical writers. Our intellectually gifted men lack devotion to the Church's honor and so will not seek the material. Griffin wants to simply save the documents. Then the writers in due time will come out.

The future of the University is more promising. What Spalding would like to see is retrenchment. He took lunch with (Maurice Francis) Egan. He also met Father (John A.)
