Edwards' kind letter and one from Mr. Werner Amiet. Geo(rge Rhodius) is back in Chicago and Werner wanted to know what to do. He would not go to see Prof. Sneider; he drinks again like a fish and gets out of his head. She must beg Edwards to put him somewhere to be cured of drinking, everything at her expense.

Spalding thinks it would be better to call the little poem "Wisdom". He is concerned about the Christian Brothers. A decision from Rome forbids them to teach the classics. This is a severe blow to their educational interests. The devil is dangerous when he assumes the garb of humility and piety.

X-4-b - A.L.S. - 4pp. - 8vo. - {2}

to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

How admirable of Hudson to give those letters of Clement XIV. He has just finished (Wilfrid) Ward's life of Wiseman. It shows that (Henry Edward) Cardinal Manning was not an intriguer against (Archbishop George) Errington. Has their friend of the "Tablet" stopped short in expounding his view of Savonarola? After reading the numbers of the "Tablet" which Hudson sends, Starbuck sends them to John Alfred Faulkner of Drew Seminary. He notices that the Irish are meeting their Anglo-Saxon boastings with denials that there are any Anglo-Saxons. (Theodore) Roosevelt, like (Grover) Cleveland is an Ishmael, and Starbuck is glad to see individuality forge to the front.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Many thanks to Hudson and Father (John M.) Toohey, (C.S.C.), for the translation of that too vague letter. Ken(neth O'Connor) has a beautiful bronze medal struck in memory of the West Indian Compaign. It is made of plate from the "Maine". Yesterday came a letter from Vienna from Mark Twain, which Stoddard copies for Hudson: Twain is always forgetting to tell Stoddard that one of his books was written by Stoddard's order. Years ago he told him to write a serious book. So Twain wrote "Joan of Arc".

The (American Ecclesiastical) Review is doing well though they have $10,000 of uncollected subscriptions on their books. Heuser is glad Hudson had a chat with Father (John B.) Hogan and gave him such a wholesale notice for "Clerical Studies". With the January number he begins a series of numbers on Christian art.

O'Mara, J. R.: Kansas City, M(issouri)
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Edwards owes him a letter from '95. Since he last saw Edwards he has seen the greater part of the United States. If he succeeds with his drawing he will take up newspaper work. People tell him that he has talent and advise him to take up painting. He now sees that he learned more at Notre Dame than all the rest of his schooling.

Crawford, Roy: Lincoln, Neb(raska)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is managing the show The A. C. Thurston Company. He wanted to return to school this year but his father could not afford it. There is a great deal to do and he is inexperienced in this line. They will probably play South Bend in January. Some of his people are good and others are bad.

(Rhodius?), Lou: Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

George (Rhodius) cannot write himself on account of his eyes. About the music "The Belle of New York" is the leading waltz at present. The Dianah song is also a leading one for two step. George wants to get $20,000 from his mother to take an actress to London for lessons and then to star her and make up a troupe. Aunt says that Lou should write Edwards all. P.S. Aunt says she cannot stand all this trouble from George.

McGriskin, L.: Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

The outside world looks dismal enough and he is in a sort of melancholy mood, but the faces of old friends come back. He has been thinking of all the changes since this day last year. He little forsaw what he passed thru since. He is fairly situated; he teaches the Franciscan Brothers who teach the parochial schools in Brooklyn and that supplements his salary considerably. He asks when is Edwards going to build his new library. His donation is ready at any time. If he were as wise at Notre Dame as he is there, he might have saved some money.

Rhodius, M(arie): Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She thinks it best not to mention anything at all what they know to George (Rhodius) for he is so mistrusting. It gives her pleasure to hear that Charles is trying to make something of himself. She asks Edwards to get Charles his military suit. She will never give George a red cent to star an actress. If he wants to do it he has to take his own money.

Ganss, Father H(enry) G.: Carlisle, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ganss thinks the article will continue to arouse comment, which no doubt the New York Sun's article will intensify. Father (John) Scully, (S.J.), writes that it is the best treatment of the subject since Rome issued its encyclical on Anglican orders. (Morris Watson) Prince of the Dickinson College faculty wrote a pleasant letter. Did Hudson send a copy to the "New York Sun"? How is it that not one Catholic paper took notice of it? Hudson can announce a series of articles on "Protestantism and the Bible".
