1899 Jan. 2
Brandi, S.J., Father S(alvatore) M.: Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(Corrigan)'s letter of December 18 has just arrived. Brandi knew of Mr. S. Th's proceedings in Rome and had suggested that he should treat of his business with Msgr. Merry Del Val. He was therefore satisfied when he heard of their meeting in London and of their program. The encyclical against Americanism is at last ready and may be sent in a few days. There have been great difficulties to overcome and every possible means have been used by the clique to prevent its publication. It is true that Archbishop (John) Ireland intended to come to Rome but Cardinal Rampolla wrote him that it would be better for him to stay at home as his presence in Rome might give rise to false reports and interfere with the settlement of ecclesiastical affairs in the new colonies of the U.S. Concerning these affairs Brandi need not speak since he knows that (Corrigan) has been written to and has received instructions from the fountainhead. In the current number of the Civilta (Corrigan) will read Brandi's article on Evolution and Dogma. It preludes, he is sure, a decree against Father (John A.) Zahm. An interview of the ex-rector of the American College (Msgr. Denis O'Connell) with the reporter of a liberal paper of Rome appeared yesterday. It speaks of the Americanism and of the Holy Father being favorable to it. "Quos Jupiter vult perdere, dementat prius."

Gauvreau, Father Em. B.: Beardsley, Minn(esota)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He regrets that he does not have at hand a number of a French review which gives his biography with many compliments he hardly deserves. He was born on the Isle of Verte, province of Quebec. His father was lord of Villeraye, a title which Gauverau renounced on taking orders. His family is very ancient and has given many priests and judges to the world. Gauvreau graduated from Laval University, studied in the seminary of St. Sulpice and was ordained in 1891. He served as secretary to the Archbishop and professor in the seminary until 1894. The Archbishop of St. Paul offered him an English and German parish which he accepted although he did not know the languages. There he remained but passed his winters at the Gulf of Mexico on account of his throat. He organized the parish at Beardsley, established temperance societies, etc. He has written many articles for newspapers and French reviews of literature and science. He has in press a book on the religion and the church of Minnesota. He has translated many small works of German and English into French. He is a musician. He has obtained from the Canadian government rare French works for the seminary of St. Paul. He has refused the pastorship of a church in Minneapolis and a chair at Laval University on account of his health.

to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

With her thanks for the Christmas gift she sends best wishes and also those of Mother Lucretia, (C.S.C.). She hopes Edwards is happy and that his unselfish devotion to Notre Dame is appreciated. Sister M. Ambrose, (C.S.C.) is the guest of Mother Lucretia and a conversation anent the little curly-headed boy of years ago and his many excellent gifts of mind and heart formed the subject of their noon recreation yesterday, and proved that Edwards has friends all over the land. Their school enjoys a better attendance than it did since the death of Mother Charles. Mother Lucretia is unremitting in devising means to raise the intellectual status of the house. The priests especially appreciate her worth.

Guiney, Louise I(mogen): Auburndale, Mass(achuse)tts
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Guiney has been more than disposed to welcome Mr. O'Hara of Tipperary, but he has not yet arrived. Why was Hudson's good word for Aubrey Beardsley at Henry Harland's expense? He was far from deserving Hudson's oblique rapier thrust. Guiney asks Hudson to correct the Latin of her last letter. She is always sniffing at the heedless and inaccurate. She did not know thatMrs. Strong's(?) boy had become a Catholic.

Kilroy, Father E(dmund) B.: Stratford, Ont(ario), Canada
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He should have written sooner but thought he would pay Edwards a visit when going south. But the friend who was to be his companion on the trip is laid up with the grippe. He is glad to hear that Notre Dame is still advancing to the front. He looks upon Mother Ascention, (C.S.C.) as his ideal religious. Father Peter Paul C(ooney, C.S.C.) has forgotten to write to him. That everlasting book of Cooney's keeps him busy. Father James Walsh of Toronto could give Edwards some relics of his uncle the late Archbishop of Toronto.

Reuss, Francis X.: Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to James F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He asks the correct spelling of Bishop Garcia Diego's name. The manuscripts he has in his possession give the name without the separation and having no capital D. Reuss has been referred to Edwards as having some account of the retirement of Bishop (Frederick) Rese (of Detroit). He would like to know the real motive. Rese held his title for years in Rome and could not have been recalled for reason for which he was responsible.

to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Smith sends the first work of 1899. The story is 5,000 words and its name is "Angels Unawares". She is gaining slowly in health. Since she came to Sharon Hill Smith has had "The Story as it Was Told to Me" freshened up. The religious who told it to her was Madam Peacock of the Sacred Heart, and she of whom it was told was Mrs. Pierce (Cornelia) Connolly, who founded the Order of the Holy Childhood. Did Hudson see her story, "Fred's Little Daughter", which was sent to him last week? Smith's friend, (Lily) Apsley was determined that Hudson should have a copy.

R(euss), F(rancis X.): Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards is right about the spelling of Garcia Diego. In regard to Bishop (Frederick) Rese's retirement, Reuss has a copy of a bull appointing Bishop (John) Odin, co-adjutor of Detroit which he refused. Reuss thinks Rese has a sounder mind after he reached Rome; he lived a good while; held his episcopal faculties and used them; was out alone on the streets of Rome. Rese probably would have been out of his mind had he not taken French leave.

Brownson, H(enry) F.: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Griffith, G. Taylor: Minneapolis, Minn(esota)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Griffith thanks Hudson for the letter, the books and the Ave Maria. He plucked up courage to call on Father (James M.) Cleary. Roman Catholics ordinarily underrate a certain class of Anglicans. The point of controversy between them and Catholics is the papacy. Hudson has been more helpful than any of the priests trying to help him. It is a comfort to know that Hudson and Father (Alexander P.) Doyle are praying for him. Griffith is a Canadian. He hopes some day to be able to accept the dogma which separates them.
