Hudson's letter and two copies of the Ave Maria came today. The tendency of the article is to hasten the universal Church where Fish and Hudson will be able to commune together. The line of demarcation between Hudson and himself is not so deep. He thinks of Hudson and (Grace S?) Fish constantly. Since (James F.) Edwards is sick Fish asks Hudson to give him his love.

1899 Feb. 8
Brandi, S.J., Father S(alvatore) M.: Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(Corrigan)'s letter of January 18 arrived. The long expected document Testem Benevolentiae should by this time be in (Corrigan)'s hands. It left in the beginning of last week before Archbishop (John) Ire land was received by the Holy Father. His visit adlimina? therefore could do nothing to prevent or modify it. But (Corrigan) is already informed of this for Brandi told Miss (Ella B.) Edes who assured him that she would cable (Corrigan). As far as Brandi knows the Archbishop is keeping quiet, feeling no doubt that a great change has taken place in Rome since his adlimina in 1892. His taking now the defense of the Christian Brothers in the United States against their General may not be as effective and beneficial to the Brothers as some might think. The General in Rome has many powerful advocates. Brandi supposes that (Corrigan) has been the letter of the General to the communities in the U.S. It is written in French and English and is now circulating confidentially among the cardinals and other prelates.

He has a quantity of badly damaged sacred vessels, almost pure silver. He asks if Edwards can have them made into a pair of candlesticks. N.B. Father Joseph Hagarty of Lebanon and Jenkins would like to have the Brother at Notre Dame restring their beads.

Boyle, P. C.: Oil City, P(ennsylvani)a
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

Edwards' letter brought to the family the first ray of sunshine since Ed's escapade in South Bend. Edwards' letter served to modify the disgrace which would otherwise attach to the boy in his mother's eyes. They cannot send him back to Notre Dame (University) to face the scorn of an uncharitable faculty. They have Georgetown in mind. Ed's offense was a grave one but every rule of discipline ought to be tempered with mercy. No student should be turned away from the university before his parents receive due notice. Nor was sufficient care take to restore the property of the students. Ed's effects were thrown together and numerous small articles were not packed with his things. The atmosphere about the Administration Building gave him a little hope of a cheerful greeting. Father (Andrew) Morrissey, (C.S.C.) gave him no encouragement that anything other than manual labor was in store for his son.
