1899 Dec. 5
Cosgrain, Alice H.: Pontiac, Mich(igan)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Cosgrain finds that she has been very remiss. When Brother Otto (Vogel, C.S.C.), called he found her out of town. They are remaining for the winter at their country home. Has Hudson seen the Souvenir gotten up by Father Van Hutemps(?)? He paid a loving tribute to her sister's memory.

1899 Dec. 5
Lee, Frederick George: London, England
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lee has given up to the Vicar and Churchwardens both Church and Vicarage of All Saints. He was morally decapitated by act of Parliament. After 33 years of labor he felt the wrench painfully. The choirmen and boys gave him two handsome presents. He is directing himself to the "Reminiscences". Hudson has no idea how marvellously the movement towards Catholicism is advancing. Lee sends a transcript from the Egerton mss. of a set of verses to Our Lady.

1899 Dec. 5
(Murphy, Thomas J.) Tom: New York, (New York)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has a nice attack of rheumatism and the pain is awful. The other day he had two teeth extracted. Inflamation set in and he hasn't slept for two nights. All the engagements he made are off until he gets well. Grand Opera is coming and he is laid up. Will is studying as hard as usual.

1899 Dec. 5
Ryan, May Kathleen: Macon, G(eorgi)a
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards will perhaps no longer remember his little friend of the summer of '96 at Long Branch. Since then much sorrow has come to them in the death of their grandfather W. B. Strang. Robert has not written to her in over a year. She heard that he was touring the states in search of a climate to agree with his delicate constitution.

1899 Dec. 6
O'Byrne, J. J.: Derby, Conn(ecticut)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

O'Byrne encloses a check for $33.21 in payment for the set of Brownson's Works shipped to Father (Charles J.) McElroy, Derby, Conn., allowing $.81 for freight, although he does not have Brownson's bill to be certain of that amount.

1899 Dec. 7
Courson, Barbara Countess de: Paris, (France)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Courson is sending an episode of the reign of terror for the Ave Maria. A book of hers has been translated. Will Hudson accept a copy?

X-4-c - A.L.S. - 2pp. - 32mo. - {1}

1899 Dec. 8
Eccles, Charlotte O'Conor: London, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Eccles hopes Hudson will find suitable her article on Secular Cannonesses of Prague. It was a surprise to find Hudson had seen the "Nineteenth Century" article. Eccles wrote it at the request of a friend in Vienna, Madame (Jane Emily) de Lazowska, who with her sister Dorothea (Longard de Longgarde) is probably well known to Hudson as a Catholic novelist. They are sisters of Father (John?) Gerard, (S.J.), provincial of the English Jesuits. The Krankenhaus is in the hands of an anti-Catholic sect, chiefly Jewish agnostics.

1899 Dec. 8
(Myers), Geo(rge W.): Dubuque, Iowa
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Business has been bery good and he has been busy with his sweetheart since the announcement of their engagement. They are to be married on Feb. 21. He has assured Ad that she is to be the whole thing before the wedding; he will assert his authority later on. He wants Edwards to be one of the ushers.

1899 Dec. 8
Taunton, Father Ethelred L.: London, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

What a commentary on 1900 years of gospel that is now going on in South Africa. Aiden Gasquet's new work, "The Eve of the Reformation", is his most important contribution to history. In his book, Hudson will be delighted with Erasmus, always a friend of Taunton's.

1899 Dec. 8
Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine): Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tiernan returns the cheque. Her reason is that Hudson should make his estimate of what is due and not merely accept hers. She will be glad to have the exact balance due her.

1899 Dec. 9
Stoffel, C.S.C., Father N(icholas) J.: South Bend, Indiana
to Father Lauth: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lauth will do a great work of charity if he looks up the baptismal record of Margret Lucie who was baptised in the Log Chapel at Notre Dame by Father DeSeilles. DeSeilles was also her godfather and the old Mother Superior at Notre Dame was her godmother. Margret is one of twins, the other being Katie. She remembers that she was born on New Year's day but does not know how old she is. Her father was Charles Lucie and her mother was Elizabeth Laplante.

Mulholland will pay for the frame to make up for the blunder of the big freight bill The Rev. H. Clay Trunbull, a Protestant clergyman, has published a book which speaks highly of Father (William) Corby (C.S.C.) and the Catholic chaplains.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father(Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard longs to see the autobiographical series. The house is about to be sold over Hudson's head. That means retiring in to a bare cell to eat his heart out.

1899 Dec. 13
Flynn, Mrs. Marry: Erie, P(ennsylvani)a
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She has searched in vain for the vestments which once belonged to Bishop (Josue M.) Young. They are not among the vestments used at the cathedral. Instead she will send a surplice presented to Bishop Young on the day of his consecration.

1899 Dec. 15
(Henoch, Mrs. Milton) Drusie: (LaPorte, Indiana)
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

How strange of Edwards not to look them up during his visit to New York last summer! She hasn't heard from dear old St. Mary's in years. It is sad that one should allow the home of so much joy to become so distant. But when one marries life assumes new and varied aspects and duties. She has the dearest little infant ever born but she has resolved not to bore people talking baby.

1899 Dec. 15
(MacDonnell), Sister Mary Magdalene: (Lisbon, Portugal)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister was so ill as to have received the last sacraments. The charge of procurator has expired. They had only one case of the Plague in Lisbon. In Porto they fear the Plague is ineradicable. For political motives the government would pay no attention to the physician who first gave the alarm. There is an abominable magazine in vogue called "Munsey's".

1899 Dec. 15
McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

McQuaid asks for 100 copies of the letter permitting Midnight Mass for the 31st and also 100 copies of the document referred to in (Corrigan)'s letter. The Jubilee this coming year is only for visitors to Rome and those who cannot go like nuns, prisoners; but next year there will be a universal jubilee for the rest of the world. McQuaid is going in September, 1900. He proposes to begin in April erection of a new building for St. Bernard's Seminary. They cannot get along without additional accommodation. McQuaid wrote to Father (H.) Wall saying that he could not preach for him in January. McQuaid proposes to decline all invitations this coming year, except St. Patrick's in March in Newark.

1899 Dec. 16
Meleney, George B.:
Library Bureau, Chicago, (Illinois)
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

There is a misunderstanding regarding the matter about which Edwards writes. Their acquaintance with Edwards is almost entirely through their W. D. Kelly who claims Notre Dame as his Alma Mater. When they sent the sample stack they thought Edwards would build his library without delay. A concern does not send out goods that cost $75 without charge.

1899 Dec. 16
Richardson, Marion M(uir): Richardson, Utah
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The (Brigham Henry) Roberts case is not a moral one. Primarily, the Mormon organization is a treasonable conspiracy of which polygamy is the outward sign. Since statehood the "church" has become the Utah government. The truth of Mormonism is told in (John Williams) Gunnison's "History of the Mormons". The Mormons murdered him, tearing his heart quivering from his body. To say a word against polygamy where it prevails is to court destruction. The taxes assessed on Gentiles are two to four times what they are on Mormons. The judge of the seventh district is a three-wived polygamist. Morals are "unspeakable". Salt Lake is trimmed up for visitors. It is mutiny reaching through Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona and Idaho. (Williams Jennings) Bryan, to whom Richardson wrote, has taken the honorable position that the Democrats cannot afford to endorse the thing. The Republicans must follow. She does not think the Holy Father would approve of the cowardly silence of the Salt Lake Catholic clergy if he knew the truth.

1899 Dec. 18
Winthrop, Alice Worthington: Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Winthrop is gradually regaining strength. She ventures to propose two or more plans. She prefers to make definite arrangements with the persons who care for her work. She would like to write once a month an article on the French books which are constantly appearing. Winthrop would also like to undertake a series of articles dealing with present sociological conditions. (Maurice Francis) Egan thinks Hudson might like a translation of portions of "La Bonne Souffrance".

O'Byrne, J. J.: Brooklyn, N(ew) Y(ork)
 to H(enr)y F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Brownson is to ship a set of Brownson's Works by fast freight, charges prepaid, to Father Joseph M. Gleason, Waterbury, Conn., if they will reach him by freight by Dec. 30. He is going abroad and will present the set to a college in Ireland. Otherwise they must go by express.

1899 Dec. 20
(Myers), D(orrance): Dubuque, Iowa
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He surprised the folks by coming home lat night. His father wants to be remembered to Edwards. All the family asked about him and were disappointed to hear that Edwards would not be there for Xmas and said that something unlooked for would happen and prevent his coming at all.

1899 Dec. 20
O'Kennedy, Father Richard: (Fedamore, Ireland)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Lady Monteagle has undertaken to try to obtain Sir Stephen de Vere's translations. He lives in an island in the Shannon and is horribly deaf. Monteagle is very high church. If they are successful O'Kennedy will write for Hudson a paper on de Vere's translations of Homer. His only vacation is when he goes down to visit Monteagle and Charlotte O'Brien, the patriot's daughter.

Foley, Charles E.: (Chicago, Illinois)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Many times has he wanted to write to thank Edwards for the interest and hospitality he showed while Gene and Lucile were in South Bend. He doesn't believe the girls ever will forget how A1 Becher got under the bed. If Edwards is coming to Chicago during the holidays he must come to see them.

1899 Dec. 21
Richards, H(enry) L.: Winchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's remark regarding the extraordinary character of Richard's conversion recalls vividly the absorbing experience. He is not surprised that Hudson is in correspondence with (Benjamin Franklin) De Costa and (Charles C.) Starbuck. No doubt Hudson helped de Costa along; he hopes Hudson will be as successful with Starbuck. Richards saw notice of the arrival of Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.), at the monastery in Hoboken. He is anxious to hear what he has to say about the conversion of Mrs. ( ) Petersen. Their Jesuit son, (Father Joseph Havens Richards, S.J.), has not entirely recovered and there is no immediate prospect of his being much better. He is now spiritual director of the college graduate sodality.

Brownson, Edward J.: Detroit, Mich(igan)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

1899 Dec. 22
Coppens, S.J., Father C(harles): Omaha, Neb(raska)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Coppens wishes Brownson and his family the blessings of the season. He has got the Omaha Public Library to purchase a set of Brownson's Works, which have already been procured, and he will see that his pupils draw much profit from them. He is glad that Brownson has succeeded so well in writing the memoirs of (Orestes A. Brownson); no one else could have done it half so successfully. The books will stamp his character indelibly upon the mind of the Church in America. Many of the subjects on which he has written have lost or will lose their interest, but his personality was unique and will not be forgotten. He urges Brownson to take good care of his health and not to think of getting old.

Heuser, Father H(erman) J.: Overbrook, (Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The "(American Ecclesiastical) Review" does not give Heuser so much trouble now. Heuser has sometimes thought of giving up the "Conference" department of the Review, but that would not do. If possible he will answer Hudson's request for a short paper on the Bible.

1899 Dec. 24
Seton, Mgr. Robert: Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has just returned from assisting and speaking at three Masses, but cannot delay in thanking Edwards for the second volume of Brownson's life. He wonders if Edwards ever received a copy of Seton's book. Bretano sent the book to the Ledger to be reviewed and Seton does not think that was the best one. The Chicago Post simply announced the book. It seems dishonest for a newspaper to accept an expensive book and not review it.

1899 Dec. 25
Monarch, Benita: (Owensboro, Jentucky)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Nothing could have pleased her more than the Notre Dame collage pin which Edwards sent her. She has been anxious for a long time to enter as a pupil at St. Mary's and now her parents have consented. She is going to work diligently. All at Mt. Lamr send love to Edwards.

(Fox), Ned: (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He intended to write Edwards before but he has been on the jump every minute with parties. There is a party every night and he is having a fine time dancing with all the pretty girls. He met a boy who intends to go to Notre Dame; he is a good athelete.

Paquette, O.M.I., Father M.J.P.: Duck Lake, Sask(atchewan) N.W.T.
to Miss Westervelt: (New York, New York)

The good ladies of the Tabenacle Society would feel pleased to know that he celebrated Midnight Massin his new little chapel and wore the vestments the society sent him. Great crowds of his poor Indians came and it was a consolation for him to be able to give them instruction in their own language, Cree.

1899 Dec. 26
Solberg, Thorwald: Washington, D. C.
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Solberg, as Register of Copyrights, speaking for the Librarian of Congress, explains that the statement in the printed card acknowledging the remittance for money was in no way to cast reflection upon the particular title which Brownson filed. It was presumed that any one who had sent printed title and applied as stated would know that no further concern need be felt; but if they had not so complied with the law, then it was necessary that some steps should be taken to comply with these legal requirements.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan): (New York, New York)

McQuaid encloses a cutting from a Rochester paper (no enclosure). Can it be true that Rome proposes to have all dispensations for mixed marriages go over to Italy? If so, it means they are to drive thousands of families out of the Church. Already McQuaid has had to put off one applicant whose marriage had been announced for New Year's day.

(Murphy, Thomas J.) Tom: New York, (New York)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He manages to have a good time even if he is a little helpless. He took a beautiful faint in a Turkish bath and they had a lovely time to revive him. Many things are going on and some he can't refuse. Sunday he is going to a Hungarian Peasant Ball. If there is no change soon he will go to the Springs to cure his rheumatism.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

When (Corrigan) sees the Delegate, (Archbishop Sebastion Martinelli, O.S.A.) he should ask him if McQuaid could marry a couple, both baptized. Very urgent, as the man is non-Catholic and has to go to his business down South immediately after the marriage on New Year Day. P.S. Up in Rochester, all canon law authorites hold that the suspension (mixed marriages) does not extend to missionary countries. Besides, McQuaid has no official document.

S(eton), Mgr. R(obert): Jersey, City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was exceedingly glad to hear from Edwards but was mortified to learn of the miscarriage of the books. Brentano assured him that they would not think of such a thing as not sending Edwards the book until he had sent the money. Seton was wanting to get Edwards' unbiassed opinion of the book.

Ken(neth O'Connor) and Jules pushed Stoddard out of the house the 21st. He spent a week with Father (Joseph L.) Kirlin, one of their old students, at Frankford. He is proud to be in the book of "Helpful Thoughts". Stoddard wishes a syndicate of wealthy Catholics would start a publishing house.
