He has been disappointed in getting money due him, and one man gave him a check for $55 dated ahead and which may not be good, If his diary had not been mislaid he could have paid Brownson all right, for he paid a bill for $21 last week which he might have let go for a week or two.

Randall, Father W(illia)m E.: St. Louis, M(iss)o(uri)
to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Now, when passenger traffic is suspended in St. Louis, mercantile business almost paralyzed, and the public mind excited and alarmed, the priest's views are called upon. The Pope's Encyclical is studied and the teachings of the world's greatest teachers are pondered; and Father Randall feels the extent of his debt of gratitude to the wisdom of the great luminary and most incorruptible and courageous man, Dr. (Orestes A.) Brownson, for whom he prays and offers Mass, and who has taught him a great part of what he knows and has so graphically illustrated the doctrines of the Church. May his words of wisdom always live, especially those uttered for the guidance of the poor laborers in their hard and almost hopeless warfare with corporate wealth, enthroned in high places. He quotes in Latin about Brownson.

Sibbel, Joseph: New York, (New York)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

He mails some photos of statues lately executed. He is sorry that Mother Annunciata, (C.S.C.) has passed away. She held correspondence with him for some time concerning the execution of the marble "Pieta" for the chapel. The Pieta if executed would surely be a memorial in her honor. He thinks he has done full justice to the Catholic side of the case in next week's Digest. Tyler thinks Hudson is right about the exchanges; he has been trying for some time to reduce the number.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard is getting fairly well. Yesterday he had a call from Father (Lambert L.) Conrardy. Stoddard was not favorably impressed. He had nothing kindly to say of Brother Joseph (Ira B. Dutton) or of the Sisters, nor much of Father (Joseph) Damien (de Veuster, SS.CC.). He seemed to wish to impress Stoddard that he had created order out of chaos at the Leper settlement, but was not appreciated. He is curious to see the new edition of "Troubled Heart". Kenneth (O'Connor) is hard at work. He comes of age next February. T(h)om(as) Cleary's mother and sister-in-law are dead.

Ned went down yesterday to see Notre Dame beat Chicago. It seemed nice to see some Notre Dame boys once more. He heard that one of the McBride boys died.

1900 May 21
Doyle, W(illia)m T.: Milwaukee, Wis(consin)
 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

He did not get a chance to visit Detroit last month. Has Henry read Purcell's "Life of Manning?" He shall lend him the volumes, if Brownson so wishes. He asks Brownson about getting letters for publication. Since a text has not materialized, he uses Branchereau as a peg to hang (Orestes A. Brownson's) ideas on, to systematize them as it were. He will return the book at once if Brownson wants it. He hopes Brownson will translate foreign letters in the forthcoming volume and put the originals in an appendix. Marquette College bought the first two volumes of the Life and are reading them in the refectory. He speaks of a number of contemporary articles in the periodicals. If Brownson wants any works looked up for the next volume, he is to let Doyle know; he could send extracts, and Brownson could make his own choices.

Brownson's writings which are noteworthy as expressions of courage and for references to incidents in his life which indicate the man of courage, for his text on the unveiling of the monument will probably be "A Man of Courage." The site has not yet been selected, but he hopes it will be very shortly and that the dedication will take place next fall.

(Huffer), Estelle: Bad Nanheim
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

It is not necessary to tell how very glad they were to receive Edwards' letter in which he tells them they might welcome him in Paris this year. They do not see why he intends to leave in July. She does not think it will be hard to get a berth in June. She was sorry to hear of all the sad changes at Notre Dame but glad to hear the college is flourishing.

Foley, Charles: Rockbridge Album Springs, V(irginia
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Certainly Notre Dame (University) is winning great victories this year. No doubt Cork will do well at the meet next Saturday. He is having a glorious time at the different springs. The scenery at Notre Dame isn't in it with the Blue Ridge Mountains. He invites Edwards to spend a week with him in Chicago.
